Nov. 24, 1925- R. c. RUSSELL LOOSE LEAF BOOK Filed July 28, 1925 attozuuas' Patented Nov. 24, 1925,
1 F I C E ROBERT C. RUSSELL, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
LOOSE-LEAF BOOK.
Application fil d u y 2 1825. Serial No. 46,605.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ronnnr C. ItUssELL a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in loose leaf books, and more particularly to that type in which the members which pass through the leaves are connected with the covers of the book through the medium of longitudinally movable devices which co operate with the leaf-penetrating members to lock them normally in position.
An object of my presentinvention is to improve the efiiciency of loose leaf securing devices, and include simple and eiiicient key controlled means for locking companion locking bars of a loose leaf book, against movement but permitting them, when released with the use of a key, to be moved to release the leaf-penetrating members.
With this and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is a face view partly in section and partly broken away showing back and cover members of a book and illustrating an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view in transverse section;
Figure 3 is a view of the key, and
Figure 4 is a detail view illustrating the locking bars.
The cover members of a book are indicated at 1, 1, and the back member at 2. To each cover member, a plate 3 is secured, and each plate is bent upon itself in a manner to provide guides 4, portions of which overlie respective edge portions of the back member 2. Each guide 4 receives locking bars 5 and 6, each of which may be provided at one end with a thumb or finger piece 7 and these locking bars are preferably made flat or rectangular in cross section. Each looking bar is recessed at 8 and formed with pins or fingers 9 disposed longitudinally of the bar and projecting over portions of the re cesses so as to leave openings 9. The guides 4 are provided at intervals with notches 10 to receive the perforated end portions of links or cross bars 11 which are adapted to pass through suitable perforations 12 in the leaves 13,the perforations in said links or cross bars 11 being caused to enter the openings 9 of the locking bars and receive the pms or fingers 9 on said bars when the latter are moved inwardly toward each other, thus connectingsaid bars or links with the book covers through the medium of the locking bars and guides.
In the embodiment of the invention shown inthe drawings, two locking bars are provided in a guide at each edge portion of the back 2 and the inner edge portions of the cover members 1, but if desired, locking bars may be provided at one side only of the back and the links or cross bars 11 hinged to the opposite cover member in any suitable manner.
The locking bar 5 of each pair is provided at its inner end with a hook 14:, and the look ing bar 6 is provided with a resilient or spring finger 15 which may be made integral with said bar and this finger is provided at its free inner end with a hook 16 to automatically engage the hook 1 1 on the bar 5 when said bars are moved toward each other, and thus the locking bars are automatieally locked against longitudinal withdrawing movement.
To unlock the locking bars and thus permit them to be moved to witlu'lraw the pins or lingers 9 from the links or cross bars 11. to release the latter, a key 17 is employed and each guide is provided with a key hole 18 so positioned that when a key is passed through such hole, it will be positioned as indicated in Figure 1, to be engaged (when turned) with the spring finger 15 of locking bar 6 and move said finger out of locked relation to the hook portion of the locking bar 5. The locking bars 5 and 6 having been thus unlocked, they may be moved longitudinally to release the link or cross bars 11.
In order that the locking bars may be prevented from being fully withdrawn from the guides; pins or rivets 19 may be passed transversely through the latter and the locking bars may be provided with elongated recesses 20 forming shoulders 21 which latter may engage the stop pins or rivets 19.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a loose leaf book, the combination with guide meansandcross links, of locking bars movable in said guide means and provided with means to engage the cross links, one of said locking bars having a spring finger and the other locking .bar having rigid engaging means for said spring finger, whereby the locking bar'sinay be'looked against endvvise withdrawing or releasing movement, and means whereby the locking bars may be released from each other.
2. In a loose leaf book, the combination withguide means and cross links, of locking bars movable in said :guide means and provided with meansto engage the oross links, one of said locking bars having a spring finger and the other locking bar having rigid engaging means for said spring finger, whereby the locking bars may be locked against endwise withdrawing or releasing movement, and a key to move said spring finger to disengage the locking bars.
3. In a loose leaf book, the combination with guide means and cross links, of locking bars movable in said guide means and provided with means to engage the cross links,
.one of said locking bars having a spring finger and the other locking bar having rigidengaging means for said spring finger,
whereby the locking bars may be locked provided with means ;to engage said links,
oneof said locking 'barshaving a rigid hook at its inner'end, a spring finger on the other locking bar having a hook end to engage the rigid hook ofthe first-mentioned locking bar, and means to move the spring linger out of looking relation with said rigid hook. In testimony whereof, I have signed this spec'rficatlon.
