Description
Nov. 17 1925 E. C. SWEETSER OPEN AIR CRIB Filed Oct. 8. 1924 i g 1; jagfb ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 17, 1925.
UNITED STATES EVELYN C. Sl/VEETSER, OF'BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
OPEN-AIR CRIB.
Application filed October 8, 1924. Serial No. 742,287.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EVELYN C. SwEE'rsER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in an Open-Air Urib, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to open air cribs or beds constructed so that they may be attached to a window frame or similar structure whereby a child can in perfect safety be placed in the open air for unlimited periods of time, thereby leaving the mother or nurse free to engage in household or other duties but with full opportunity to watch over and attend to any wants or needs of the child.
My invention will have special advantages in cities, where it has heretofore been only possible to give a child thenecessary benefits of fresh air, by the use of a baby carriage or perambulator which involves considerable inconvenience and the enforced absence of the mother or nurse from the home during the airing period of time.
It will be seen from the drawings and description herewith that the device combines all the required elements of strength, safety, ada tability for use in any and all kinds of win ows, with protection against drafts, sun glare, or inclement weather of any kind, and also that my structure can be made economically, and put together or taken apart, and secured in position on the window frame with a minimum of time and effort.
Other advantages and benefits are set forth in the following detailed description and in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the device positioned in a window.
Fig. 2 is a side view of same with the window frame in section.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view of the supporting rod and brace and the means for locking the upright members of the structure to the bottom member.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the clamp 18.
The preferred form of my invention shown herewith comprises a rigid metal base frame 10, one member 11 of which may be secured to the sill 12 of the window frame. To make the device portable and easy to assemble and take apart when desired, the bottom member 13 of the crib is secured to the frame 10, and the three side members 14, 15 and 16 are made separately and locked to the base frame 10 by the rotatable hooks 17 which are threaded at one end and inserted in openings tapped in the side members of the said base frame.
To secure the front edges of the- members 14, 15 and 16 together, I employ clamps 1818 which consist of an arched member 19 in the concaved side of which the upright frame members 20-20 are gripped, the clamps being locked and held in position by the screws 2121 which pass through the arched member 19 and have upon their threaded ends the washers 2222 and the knurled nuts 2323. The said clamps and the hooks 17 serve to provide a strong, secure receptacle in which a child may be left in perfect safety.
As an additional support the braces 24-24 are secured at their upper ends 2525 to the upright sides of the window frame and at their lower ends openings are provided through which the threaded ends of the rod 26 pass, nuts 27 and 28 serving to lock the side members of the base frame 10 against any lateral movement.
A rear wall member 15 may be used when desired to prevent the child from either falling or climbing out of the crib into the room, outside of which the structure is located.
To prevent any vertical movement of the assembled structure the U-shaped locking devices 2929 are hooked over the said side members of the base frame the lower outside ends having openings 30 30 through which the ends of the rod 26' pass.
It will be seen from the foregoing that this device while easy to take apart. assemble or .place in position in a window, is very rigid,
strong and safe. As shown herewith a good weight of metal mesh is employed for the bottom and sides of the structure but any other suitable material could be utilized, and if desired a top or cover of the same material could be employed although in many cases fabric awnings and side pieces would be advantageous to shield the child from sun glare or currents of air.
If desirable for any reason this device could also be positioned inside the room by attaching the member 11 to the inner window sill and dropping the braces 2424 to form legs reaching to and supported by the floor of the room.
I claim In an open air crib the combination of the following elements; a base frame member adapted to be secured to a Window frame; sectional front and side members adapted to be locked in position on the said base frame member; means for locking the said front and side members on the said base frame member and comprising rotatable hooks mounted in the frame of the said base frame member and adapted to engage by their hooked ends with the frames of the said front and side members; means for locking together the said front and side members and comprising arched clamps adapted for engagement on their concave sides With the upright frame members of the said front and side members, and means for locking the said arched clamps in engagement with the said upright frame members; and means for holding the assembled structure against lateral or Vertical movement comprising and hooks adapted to lock together the side members of the base frame and the ends of the said rod.
EVELYN C. Sl/VEETSER.
