JACOB LOEWENSTEIN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,170, dated October 20, 1874; application filed July 15, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J noon Lonwnnsrnnv, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Overalls, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in overalls, whereby they are rendered self-adjustable, so as to be worn by men of various girts, and self-supporting by means of an elastic waistband. The invention consists in cutting the overalls with an old-style flap or fall, which is in turn out vertically, to form a French fly or flap in front. The sides ofthe flap-front are connected by an elastic strap carried around the back of the garment in a fold of the waistband. The back part of the garment has a lapel sewed thereto at the side seam, or, rather, on an upward continuation thereof, each lapel having a hook at its corner, to engage with any one of a row of eyelets in the waistband of the front flap, whereby the garment is made'adjustable to various girts. The elastic strap draws the front part of the garment so as to cause it to set smoothly, and transfers all extra fullness to the back and seat, which enables the wearer to stoop without danger of straining the fab ric or seams.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the garment, looking at it in front, as it appears when buttoned up. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the garment unbuttoned. Fig. 3 is a cross or horizontal section of Fig. l at the plane of the waistband.
In the drawing, A represents a pair of overalls, the upper part of whose side seams are left open, as at a, to form the old. and wellknown flap or fall, but which, in the present case, is not used as such. The front part of the garment is cut vertically in the center, to form a French fly, b, the two parts being united by buttons, in the usual way of making overalls and pantaloons. B is an india-rubber corded elastic strap, connecting the side corners of the fall or flap a by passing aroundthe back of the garment from one flap to the other, the said strap passing through the fold of the waistband. A is a lapel, sewed to the back part of the garment at each side, at the top of the side seams, the front corner of each being provided with a hook, d, to engage with one of a series of eyelets, c, in the front part of the waistband.
The hooks and eyelets may be substituted with buttons or other equivalent devices.
It will readily be seen that, by hooking the lapels to the proper eyelets, the garment may be adjusted to any ran go of girt, requiring only a fit as to length of leg to enable any person to wear it; and, when in use, the elastic strap not only supports it, but gives the wearer more freedom of movement in stooping or constrained attitudes.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, the overalls A, provided with the combined flap and fly fronta b, elastic strap B, lapels A, hooks d, and eyelets c, or theirequivalents, all combined and arranged substantially in the manner shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
