UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD C. GLEDHILL, OF GALION, OHIO.
WHEEL FOR ROAD GRADERS.
Original application filed August 28, 1923, Serial No. 659,763. Divided and this application filed March 8,
1925. Serial No. 12,926.
[ all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD C. Gnnomnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gallon, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheels for RoadGraders, of which the following is a specification.-
y the wall of a ditch. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and will be hereinafter fully set forth and defined.
The drawing is a transverse section of a wheel embodying the invention.
, bearing portion 52 of circular cross section and the hub 53 of the wheel is engaged over the said spindle, anti-frict on rollers 54: being preferably fitted between, the spindle and the inner circumference of the hub, as will be readily understood. Anoil guide or opening 55 may be provided in the hub as is obvious so that lubricant may be supplied to the roller bearings and free rotation of the wheels obtained, A retaining nut 56 is secured to the outer end of the spindle 52 and extends over the outer end of the hub so as to close the same and reta'n the rollers therein. Adjacent itsvouter end, the hub is provided with an annularflange 57 having its outer face rabbeted,as shown at 58, and the inner circular edge of a disk 59 seats in the sad rabbeted portion, as clearly shown, This disk is a metal plate provided at its outer edge with'an annular flange 6Q which is rigidly secured to the rim or tread '61 of the wheel and the inter mediate portion-'62 of the disk or plate is so disposed as'tobe flush with the outer edge of the. rim or treadyas clearly shown. A-
hub cap'j 6311s arranged. over the retaining nut 56fand has its edge ortion turned outwardly to bear against t e outer face of the disk 62 at the inner edge thereof, as shown at 64:, while securing bolts 65 are inserted through the hub flange 57, the inner edge portion of the disk and the outer edge portion 64 of the hub cap to secure all the parts together.
When a road grader is at work, the wheels on one side are running in the ditch or gutter side of the road, while the wheels at the opposite side of the machine are running in a h'gher plane or on the crown of the road. Obviously, a greater strain or weight is imposed upon the lower wheels, and with the usual construction of wheels embodying a plural'ty of separated spokes, the wheels are forced against the bank of the ditch or gutter so that the edge of the rim or tire cuts intothe bank and the spokes exaggerate the cutting away of the bank which is started by the rim or tire/lit clalm i I my present machine, however, by providing 1 The axle is provided with a spindle ,orv
In 'a road grader. the combinat'on of an axle, a hub fitted upon the end of the axle and having an annular flange adjacent its outer end, a retaining cap secured on the outer end of the axle and bearing agamst portion of said disk being flush with the outer edge of the tread ,member, and a hub cap enclosing the retaining cap and the end of the hub and'havlng its edge portion secured over the inner edge portion of the disk.
In testimony whereof I' afiix my signature.
' EDWARD C. GLEDHILL. [n s.]
