SHAFT-DRIVING MECHANISM.

Be it known that I, MARTIN E. Sunny, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful. Improvement in Shaft-Driving Mechanism, of which the following a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates generally to carpet sweepers and more particularly to an improved means for actuating the brush shaft from the floor roller and it will also be understood that this form of shaft actuating means can be employed in connection with devices other than carpet sweepers but we have illustrated the invention as applied to the housing of a carpet sweeper.
The object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple and highly eliicient form of shaft drive, one which will positivcly actuate the shaft, one which can be adjusted for the purpose of adjusting the position of the shaft with reference to the floor, and alsoa device in which the brush shaft can be quickly and easily disconnected from the driving rollers when desired.
lVith these various objects in View the invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the manner of combining or arranging the same. all of which will be fully described hereinafter and set forth in the appended claims.

shaft bein shown in section the device being illustrated as connected to the housing of a carpet sweeper; Fig. 2 is an end View of the same; Fig. 3 is a top plan view; Fig.
f is a section on the line 4-4: of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view, the shaft being removed; and Fig. 6-is a horizontal sectional view, the shaft being removed and the rollers shown in plan view.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I provide a combined bearing and driving device for the brush shaft at each side of the housing of the carpet sweeper, said housing being designated by the numeral 10 and it will be understood that this housing may be a portion of the nozzle of a suction cleaning device or it may be a portion of that type of sweeper in which the dirt is swept from the floor by a rotary brush into a conveniently located dirt re- Serial No. 605,208.

Connected to the housing 10 is a metallic frame 11 which is in the nature of an open sided rectangular frame, the end portions 12 being turned towards each other as indicated at 12 and 12 and pivoted to the portion 12 is a yoke 13, the free end of which is provided with notches 14 adapted for engagement with a lug 15 punched out wardly from the portion 12" and the yoke is also provided with a finger piece 16 by means of which the yoke can be quickly and easily adjusted to the desired position. The yoke is cutaway along its upper edge as indicated at 17 to accommodate the end of the brush shaft 18, the end of said brush shaft being located between the friction rollers 20, 21 and 22, said rollers being preferably of fiber. The rollers 20 and 21 are carried between parallel curved plates 23 pivotally mounted with reference to the yoke upon a post 24 rigidly connected to the yoke, said post being arranged at one side of the opening 17 as most clearly shown and intermediate the rollers 20 and 21 as most clearly shown. in Fig. a. The roller 22 is carried by the parallel plates 25 pivotally connected to a post 26 carried by the yoke 13 upon the opposite side of the opening 17. These rollers 20, 21 and 22 are arranged within a flanged roller 2'7, said flanged roller being arranged within the frame 11 and having a centrally disposed projection 28 upon the outer face thereof and which is adapted to contact with the frame and maintain the roller spaced from the frame. A rubber band or tire 29 is applied to the exterior of this flanged roller for contact with the floor. The fiber rollers 20, 21 and 22 contact with the interior of the flange of the roller and as the flanged roller rotates the fiber rollers are in turn rotated and transmit motion to the shaft inasmuch as the fiber rollers are forced into contact with the shaft during their contact with the flange of the roller and also by virtue of the fact that the shaft contacts with the roller 21 and rests thereon and consequently through the medium of the curved plates 23 tends to bring the roller 20 also firmly into engagement with the shaft. By having the yoke 13 adjustable it is obvious that the shaft can be ad justed to difierent heights with reference to the floor and by swinging the yoke entirely free of the frame 11 the flanged roller can be removed and the shaft relieved from between the rollers.
The wedging action between the flanged roller and the fiber rollers, two of which fiber rollers are carried at opposite ends of a pivotal frame, insures a positive binding and driving contact between the driving roller and the shaft at all times. t
It will thus be seen that I provice a very simple and highly efficient construction of shaft driving means particularly adapted fol-the operation of brush shafts of carpet sweepers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the kind described the combination with a frame, of a flanged driv ing roller arranged therein, a driven shaft adapted to have an end arranged within the flanged roller, a member connected'to the frame and plates connected to said member and carryingfriction rollers contacting with the flangedroller and with the driven shaft.
2. In a device of the kind described the combination witha frame, of a flanged roller arranged therein, friction rollers arranged within the flanged roller, a driven shaft having its end extending within the flanged roller and between the friction rollers and an adjustable member connected to the frame, the friction rollers being in turn connected to said adjustable member.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a driven shaft, of a driving roller, a frame in which said driving roller is arranged, a member attached to said frame and friction rollers disposed within the driving roller and contacting with said driving roller and with the shaft at spaced points, said friction rollers being movable relatively 'ith reference to the driving roller and the driven shaft and means for pivotally connecting said friction rollers with said member.
l. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a driven shaft, of a driving roller a frame in which said roller is arranged, friction rollers arranged within the driving roller and contacting therewith and with the driven shaft, means for carrying two of said rollers and means for carrying a third roller, and a member connected to the frame and to which said roller carryin means are pivoted.
o. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a driven shaft, of a driving roller, a frame in which said driving roller is arranged, a member connected to said frame, friction rollers arranged Within the driving roller and contacting with the driven shaft, means pivoted to the member and carrying two of the friction rollers and independent means for carrying the third roller and also pivoted to said member.
In a device of the kind described the combination with a driven shaft, of a driving roller, a frame in which said driving roller is arranged, a member pivotally conn cted to said frame and adjustable with reference to the frame, friction rollers ar-- ranged within the driving roller and con tacting with the driven shaft and means pivoted to the member at spaced points for carrying friction rollers.
7. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a frame, of a yoke pivotal y connected to one side thereof, the free end of said yoke being notched and adapted for engagement with a lug carried by the frame, a curved member pivotally connected to the yoke at one side, friction rollers carried by said member, a third friction roller and means for pivotally connecting said third friction roller to the opposite side of the yoke and a flanged driving roller arranged within the frame, said flanged roller having the friction rollers within the same and operated therefron'i, the end of the driven shaft being also within the driving rollers and in operative contact with the friction rollers.
