Patented Nov. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SCOOTER SLED.
Application filed March a, 1925. Serial No. 14,157.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn Wonrnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scooter Sleds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements on toys and has especial relation to toy vehicles or sleds.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel form of coasting sled wherein the rider is required to employ a certain amount of skill to maintain his equilibrium, so that the sled will require the exercise of both physical and mental faculties on the part of the rider and thus add to his enjoyment and to the benefit derived from its use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel form of steering head which is included in the sled structure and which in addition to being simple in construction and readily assembled, will also act to reduce wear.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toy sled constructed in accordance with the 1nvention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan View of the same.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sec tional view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a similar view showing a slightly different form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character indicates the platform of the sled which has secured to its under face a single longitudinally disposed central runner 11, the securing means being in the form of spaced pairs of brackets 12.
Located in advance of the runner 11 is a single steering runner 13 which is carried by a steeringhead, the latter comprising a disk 14 which bears against the under face of the platform 10 and which is provided with downwardly extending spaced ears 15 between which the runner 13 is secured. Extending upwardly from the upper face of the disk 14: is a standard 16, the latter extending into the lower end of atubular member 17. This member 17 extends downwardly through an opening 18 provided in the platform 10 and has secured thereto by means of a pin 19, an upper bearing member. This last mentioned bearing member comprises a disk 20- which bears upon the upper face of the platform 10 and a sleeve 21 which surrounds the tubular member 17. The upper end of this tubular member is provided with oppositely extending handles or grips 22 by means of which the position of the runner 13 may be controlled.
In Figure 4: of the drawings, the bearing disk 14 has extending upwafdly therefrom a sleeve 23. This sleeve extends through the opening 18 of the platform 10 and receives a post or member 24. Mounted u on the outside of the sleeve 23 is a bearing member which is similar to the one previously described and which includes a disk 20 and a sleeve 21. A pin 25 extends through the sleeve 21,"tl1e sleeve 23 and the member 24 so as to hold the parts assembled.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the invention provides a toy which is both amusing and beneficial, its direction of travel being under the control of the rider who must exercise both his physical and mental faculties to maintain the sled in an upright position. In addition, the construction and arrangement of the steering head will prevent undue wear of the walls of the opening 18 so that perfect steering control may be had at all times.
I The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is here in reserved to make such changes as pro erly fall within the scope of the appended c aim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:-
A sled comprising a platform, a single rear runner rigidly secured beneath the platform along the longitudinal center thereof, a single front runner disposed in a line with the rear runner, a steering head ineluding a platform enga ing disk, spaced ears depending from the isk to receive the front runner, a standard extending upwardly from the disk through the platform, a tubular member extending through and rotatable in the platform and receivlng the standard, a flanged bearing sleeve engaging the upper face of the platform and receiving the tubular member, means extending through the bearing sleeve, tubular member and standard to rigidly connect the same and a handle for the tubular member. 10
In testimony whereof. I atfiX my signature.
JOSEPH WOLPERT.
