Be it known that LJEss G. SALAZAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atwater, in the county of Merced and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Renewable-Head Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This application forms a continuation in part of my abandoned U. S. application, Serial No; 631657, filed April 12th, 1923.
The present disclosure of my invention relates to a boxmakers or lathers hatchet, the object being to provide a tool of this or analogous character, having a removable head secured in place in a novel manner and capable of being detached to permit the substitution of a new head,'when the old head has become seriously worn.
l/Vith the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.

In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of a hatchet having the usual opening 2 in which the front end of the handle 3 is received. The form of handle shown, which is preferably used, has a bifurcated front end in which a wedge 4 is received, said wedge be ing provided with a rod 5 passing rearwardly through the handle and equipped with a nut (not shown). By turning this nut, the wedge may be drawn rearwardly to tighten the handle within the body 1 and thus a great deal of inconvenience experienced with box-making hatchets is overcome.
The body 1 extends laterally from the handle in the usual manner andis provided on its outer end with a longitudinal rib 7 which is disposed parallel with the handle axis.
This rib includes an outer relatively wide 1 portion 8.,and a comparatively narrow'centrally disposed neck portion 9 integrally connecting said outer portion 8 with the body 1. The rib portion 8 is formed with, a fiat outer side 10 and with parallel edges 11 at right angles thereto. The inner surfaces 12 of the aforesaid portion 8 are in a plane parallel with the surface 10 and are disposed at right angles to the opposed sides 13 of the neck portion 9, which sides also are at right angles to the end surfaces-14 of the body 1. The rib portion 8 is provided at its front end with a ridge 15 which extends throughout its width and is flush with the front end of the rib 7;
A removable head H is provided for the body 1, said head having a slot 16 of T-shape in cross section withv its ends opening through the front and rear sides of said head.r This slot is of a size and shape to snugly receive the rib 7 and at its front end is laterally enlarged as indicated at 17 to provide an internal stop shoulder 18 which abuts against the rear side of the ridge 15 when said ridge is received in said enlargement. Thus, the head is held against possible forward movement from therib.
The rear end of the rib 7 is formed with a longitudinal bore 19 whose rearend is enlarged by a countersink 20 which opens through the upper surface 10 of the rib. The-headH .is formed in its rear lower corner with a notch 21 registering with. the countersink 20 and the countersink and notch jointly receive the enlarged head 22 of a screw 23 which is threaded into the bore '19, thus effectively holding the head H tightly in place and permitting slight wear of the for, by merely tightening the screw.
The driving surface of the head H is preferably provided with nail-engaging teeth 24 of any desired degree of fineness, according to the character-of work being done. If desired, the tool may be furnished with a plurality of heads having teeth of different sizes and any one of these heads may be applied, as occasion may require. Also, it will be seen that whenever the teeth on one of the heads are worn so as to become ineffi cient, this head may be detached and another substituted.
'As excellent results may be obtained from ridge 15 and shoulder 18 to be compensated the details disclosed, they are preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, minor changes may be made.
I claim:

A nail driving too-l comprising a handle-carried body extending laterally from the handle axis and having a rib on its outer end parallel with said axis, said rio having a relatively wide outer portion and a compar'atively narrow central neck portion connecting said outer portion with the body, said outer portion having a flat outer side and parallel edges at right angles thereto, the front end of saidflat outer side being formed with a transverse ridge extending throughout its width and flush with the front end of said rib; a removable head havi a reshaped slot opening through its front and rear sides and snugly receiving said rib, the front end of said slot being enlarged laterally to receive said ridge; the aforesaid rib being formed with a longitudinal bore which'is provided at its rear end with a fifiulltersink which opens through the outer side of said relatively wide outer portion of the rib, the rear end of said head being formed with a notch registering with said countersinh,.anda screw threaded into said bore and having an en ged head received jointly in said countersink and notch, said ridge forming the sole; means for pre venting forward sliding of the tool" head, said screw head forming the sole means for preventing rearward sliding of said tool h a V I 2. A nail driving tool comprising a handle-carried body extending later-ally from the handle. axis and having an undercut rib substantially parallel with said axis, and a removable head formed with groove snugly receiving said rib, positive means for limiting the forward movement of the head on said body the aforesaid rib being formed with a longitudinal bore which is provided at its rear end; with a countersink which opens through the outer side of said rela-V tiv iy wide outer portion of the rib, the rear end of said head being formed with a notch registering with sand countersink, and a screw threaded into said bore and having an enlarged head received jointly in said countersink andnotch, said stop means forming the sole means for holding the tool head dle-carried body extending laterally from the handle axis and having a central ribon its outer end parallel with said axis, said rib having a relatlvely wide outer portion and a comparatively narrow central neck portion connecting said outer portion with said outer end of the body, said outerl end of said body and the inner and outer sides of said Wide rib portion being disposed in truly parallel planes, the opposite edges of said wide rib portion and the opposite sides of said narrow neck portion being disposed in truly parallel planes at truly right angles tothe aforesaid planes, a transverse ridge formed on said outer side of said wide rib portion throughout the width of the latter and having its front surface flush with the front of the aforesaid body, the-rear surface of said ridge being parallel with said front surface and at right angles to the outer side of the aforementioned rib, the outer surface of a r ge ing in a plane pa al el to the aforesaid outer side of the rib a removable head contacting with said outer end of the body and formed with a longitudinal groove whose walls contact snugly with all longitudinal surfaces of saidrib, the front end of said groove being lat enlarged o; snugly receive the aforesaid ridge; and releasable means for holding the head against rearward sliding.
