To all whom t may concern:
'Be it known that I, HARRY CHARMS, a citizen of Russia, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inVernier Dials, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vernier dials and has as its main object to provide a composite dial, one section of which may be used for approximate settings and another in obtaining extremely accurate readings.
yThe demand for finely adjustable dials, as used in connection with wireless telephone or radio apparatus, can be met only by a dial capable of two distinct movements, be -entirely self-contained, compact and of attractive appearance, and be easily operated by a novice. Y
. With the foregoing features in contemplation, the present invention will be hereafter described and illustrated in the accom used as a support for the structure, Which,-
as illustrated carries a shaft 11 engaged in a variable condenser 12 having fixed stator plates 13 and rotor plates 14, all of the ordinary type o-f construction.
The portion of the shaft 11 extending through the panel passes into a sleeve 15 having a hub 16 on'which is seated a disc 17 held stationary by a screw'18 engaging in the panel and provided with a spacer 19 so thatrthe .disc is maintained parallel with the panel, and the disc is held frictionally on the shoulder of the sleeve by a clamp nut 20.
The outer part of 'the sleeve contains a bored recess 21 into which a tapered screwthreaded/extension 22 of the sleeve projects, this extension being split, as at 23, into several parts so as to contact and grip tle,

Another enlargement 34, at the end of the cylinder provides a seat for the disc 27, which covers the bore or chamber 35 in the cylinder, and the cylinder is further supported on the periphery of the xed disc 17.
Secured in the outer end of the chamber 35 is a ring 36 having arms or spokes 37 fixed in a hub 38 provided with a tubular stem 39 rotatable on the stem 25, and hav-4 ing on its inner surface a spur gear 40.
Fixed on the outer side of the disc 17 is an outstanding bracket 41 offset to one side, and, on the opposite side of the disc is another, larger bracket 42,- offset in like manner and A having at its lend a right. angled member 43.
A spindle 44 is mounted at one end in the disc 17 to have a bearing in the member" 43, its extending end having fixed upon it a pinion 45 in mesh with the gear 38, and formed on the spindle 44 is a helix or worm 46, the axis of which is parallel to the shaft 11. A
Another spindle 47 is mounted transversely in the structure, its ends being journalled in the brackets 41 and 42. One end of the spindle is formed to present a worm gear 48 meshing with the worm 46, and midway in the length of the spindle is another worm 49 which meshes with a worm gear 50 formed on a sleeve 51 rotatably mounted on the sleeve 15' and clamped frict-ionally thereon by the nut 52.
From the foregoing it will be understood that rapid rotation of the disc 27 is conveyed directy to the dial 30, the friction sleeve 51 being suiciently free' to remain quiescent,
