Description

P. HAMILTON TRACK'GUARD' RAIL Filed March 20, 1924 'VZZ/ MawM;
Patented Nov. 3, 1925.
PAUL ear ngs, or ealnnns'nune, InnIANA, nssrenon 'ro JAY vi wnscortr, OF ILLINOIS. Y I
'rRAck Guam) RAIL.
Application filed March 20, 1924. Serial No. 700,593.
To all whom it may concern Be it-known that L-iP-Ann HAMILTON, a citizen of the United' States, residing in- Greens'burg, in the county of Decatur and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Track Guard Rails, of which the following isfa full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the specification. f 1 a My invention relates particularly to track guard rails which are applied to the trafiic rails of ya railway opposite the switch frogs although not limited to this usealone.
The main object of the invention resides in the provision of a track guard rail which is light'and strong, easily installed, and which is well adapted for its purpose, due provision being made for securing the guard rail. I
\Vith this object in view my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination, and arrange ment of parts by which the said objects and certain other objects, hereinafter appearing, are effected all as fully described with reference to the, accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the said drawing Figure 1 is a top plan View of the track guard rail of my invention in its applied position with respect toa section of a traffic rail.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the track guard rail in its applied position with respect to a section of" a trafiic rail and the ties of a track structure. j I Y Figure3 is a section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1. a I
' Figure 4 is a section of the trackguard rail on the line 4.-4 of Fig.2. c
Figure 5 is an end view of the track guard rail and showing a'traflie rail section in proper relation therewith. ,7
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the variousviews. I
Referring to the drawings the main or body portion of the guard rail is of acute angle cross section, one leg 1 of which angle section forms a base, and the other leg 2 of which angle section extends upwardly from the base and toward a trafiic'rail 3 to which the guard rail is applied and has awheel flange bearing surface 4- along its upper edge facing the head 5 of the'trafiic rail 3. The base 1 is provided at the ends thereof and at intervals therebetweenwith d'own wardly offset portions 6 adapted to overlie respective ties 7 of a track structure, and
Q. lateral extensions 8- extend from the por I.
tions. 6 in both directions andiare adapted to underlie the trafiicrail' to which the guard rail is applied on the one side of the body portion and form wear plates therefor. These extensions are providedxwitl'i spike apertures 9 whereby the extensions are spiked respectively with the ties and with the trafiic rail and ties, apertures ofx'the extensions underlying the traflic rail being disposed adjacent the outer ends of these extensions so that the trafiic rail isspiked on the side thereof opposite that on which the body portionof the guard rail lies and the spike apertures thereof including usual stepped spike apertures for the accommodation of traffic rails having base webs. of (life ferent width. Transverse ribs 10, bridge the angle section of the body portion at intervals in the length. thereof and comprise ribs at said downwardly offset portions '6 and therebetween-to secure the-legs 1 and 2 of the angle section of the body. portion firmly, certain of these, ribs, i.-e., those. disposed between the portions 6 being provided with extensions 11 which project outwardly from the main or body portion of the guard rail and engage the web of the traffic rail and under the head thereof for properly p0- sitioning the guard rail with respect to the traffic rail and for resisting tipping of; the guard rail. -Additional transverse ribs 12 areprovided on the outside ofthe legQof the angle section of the body. portion and jointhis leg with the extensions 8 extending outwardly from the corresponding sideof the bodyportion to secure these extensions with thebodyportion firmlyj.. j
The upper portions of the leg2 adjacent the (ends thereof gradually turn away. from the traffic rail and vslantdo-vvnw ardly toward said ends, as designated at13,and1 form relatively low vertical end portions as desigr nated at 14. Laterally projecting formations, consisting of horizontal top portions 15 connected with the leg 2 of the body portion thereof and vertical end wall portions 16 connected with the leg 2 at the extreme ends thereof and with the top portions 15, are formed at the endsof the body and project 'toward'the' traffic rail to which the guard rail is applied and are adapted to ngage in he opp ing hanne f th traflic' rail thereof to aid in the securingof the guard rail in proper relation with the traffic rail these formations serving ,for properly positioning the guard rail with re-' spect to the traflic rail andforminga s rong and roadbed levelthereby providing against clogging, and these portions ofthe leg 1 are provided with apertures 17 which also aid in providingLagainstlclogging and in: .addition reduce the weight of the guard rail without undue sacrifice of strength.
Thus it willbe observed that a light and strong structure is provided which is well adapted to withstand the strains and stresses incidental to use.
lVhile I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I .do not wish to be limited to the precise details-of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 7 Claims:
1. Ina track guard rail the combination of abase portion; a guardportion extending along said base and disposed at its intermediate portion at an acute-angle with the base and extending upwardly toward a trat fie rail to which the guard rail is. applied and having the upper portions thereof ad.- j acent the ends thereof gradually turned away from the traffic rail and forming verti,
cal end portions, transverse ribs bridging said angle of the base'andguard portion at intervals along the intermediate portion of said guard portion and extended therefrom toward the traffic rail to enga e the same under, the head thereof,- and e-pth guard formations at the ends of said-guard portion and extending therefrom toward the trafiic rail and adapted toengage the same under the head thereof. 1
2. In a track guard rail the: combination ofa base portion: provided with lateral .extensions spaced therealongv-forming wear p'1ates,-a guard portionzextending along said base and'disposed. at its intermediate portion at an acute angle with the 'baseaand ex.-
tending upwardly toward ,av traflic rail to vat said intermediate portion of said guard portion and bridging the said angle of the base :aaidi guard portion, additional trans verse ribs disposed between said extensions at said intermediate portion of the guardportion and bridging said angle-pf? the base and guard portion and vextenclecl therefrom connectedwith ,saidgu;a ,";d portion vertical portions connected with said guard portion and respective of said top portions underneath the same, said depth guard formations extending from said guardportion toward the traflic rail and adaptedeto engage the same under the head thereof,
3. In atrack guard railthe combination of a base portion provided with lateral'extensions spaced therealong and extending from both sides thereof forming wear plates, a guard portion extending along said base and disposed at its intermediate portionat an acute angle with the base and extending upwardly toward a traffic rail to which the guard rail is applied and having the. upper portions thereof adjacent its ends gradually turned away from the trailic rail vand;slanted downwardly toward said endsandi forming relatively low. vertical end portions, trans? verse ribs at said exteaisionspn both sides of the "guard p i n dgingtoth ngles of the base and guard portion, transverse ribs disposed between saidextensions at said intermediate portion ,of the guard port-ion and bridgingsaid acute angleof-said'f base and guard portion. andeXi Qnded; therefrom toward the traflic rail to engage the same under the head thereof, and depthv guard for t on i -th endsi'of v aid guardlpent n isting f h r zon a i t -p. :i er i ins ci nected with said guard portion?"and-vertical portion onnected. with 'sa l guard po t 1 a RAUL
