RAIL ANCI-IOR.
Original application filedv Maya/4, 1324, Serial No. 715.537. Divided and this applicationledl January 17,
To all 'whom t may concern:y
Be it known that I, HAROLD G. VARIQ,
a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Park Ridge, in the county of Cook and 6 State of Illinois, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Rail Anchors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rail anchoring devices and has for its object the` provision ofv an improved two-piece anchor device,
which is so formed as. to be simple of design, eflicient in its. operation, rigid in construction, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
is to provide an improved anchor device comprising separately formed members provided with means for engaging the edges of a rail, and with interlocking wedge por- $0 tions which cooperate to effect aiirm grip of the members with the rail when one member of the device is driven intov wedging engagement with the other, one of said members being formed so that it may be l5 conveniently made of sheet metal.
The invention consists in the new and improved constructions relating to two piece rail anchors, as will be hereinafter described and claimed for carrying out the above stated' objects, and such other objects as will appear from the following. description. ofA the embodiments shownt in the drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is. ay view in elevation of a rail anchor, constructed lin accordance with my invention, showing the parts thereof in in-V terlocked enga-gement and in their normal operative position on a rail base.
Fig, 2 is. a plan view ofthe construction shown inFig. 1. 1
Fig. 3ds: afview in perspective of one of the. parts/of the anchor showing the preferred construction when` the member. is formed from a sheet .metal blank.A
Fig. 4 is a, view in perspective ofthe other member of the. anchor, which. member interlocks with themember shown in Fig. 3, when the anchor is applied toa rail, and
Fig. 5 isa view on a reduced scale, showing the outline of the blank from which the sheet metal member shown in Fig. 3
is formed.
Referring to the drawing, -10 designatesv A more specific object of the invention Serial No. 3,009;
light sheet of metal-, since the downwardly 1 bent margins 16 and 17 of the Ablank provide rigidifying flanges 19- and 2O of thev finished anchor member. The flange 2 O- is provided with an extension 2,1. which. provides a tie abutment :of suitable. area for,
bearing against Vone of lthe vertical; faces of the tie 11. rlhe end 22 ofthe blank is preferably sheared on a diagonaLli-ne, and isbent on a line parallely tothe diagonal edgey to provide an upstanding flange 23, j
which normally projects beyond the edge of the railbase and extends. at an angle`v thereto, so as. to provide: a wedge sunface 24: which cooperates with the jaw. member 13, to effect a rm grip ofthe anchor on opposite edges of the rail base, when the member 13 is driven toits normal operative position. The jaw` portionslv 14, andl are formed with recesses lite- 15a ofi a conliguration corresponding` toithe edgeof the rail base, and are adapted to bedriven into tight wed-ging engagement with the upper and lower surfaces ofthe railr base., In order: to form the lower surface et the rail base, receiving recesses on a plane with, the top of the body portion of the. member l2, thelangee 19 and 2.0 are formed with trane- -verse recesses 2.6--26 neel" the ebd ofthe horizontal pcrtoii of the.l body- ThememberV 13. ie, preerab1y,though not necessarily,l `.cade of cast..L metck and isr formed with a): jaw 2 7` for engaging the upper inclined siirfaceot the rail' bese, e Wedge 2.8` so disposed.. es to. extend between Ioo the edge of, the rail. beseapdvtbe wedge flange, 23. 0f. the member 12.,.e11dwth a, lower flange 2.9,.r The flange 2.9 'is preferably tepered. to correspond to'A tbetapel: oitbewedge Surface- Zicf the member 1.2. and bears. agail'st the eIstr-elicits' of the lflewntiirned. liceale., 1.9,.
so as to prevent any substantial downward rocking of the member 13 when it is driven to its rail gripping position. ln applying the anchor to a rail, the jaws of the member 12 are lirst hooked over one edge of the -rail base, and the member positioned adjacent the cross tie 11, so that the tie abutting flange 21 will bear against one of the vertical faces of the cross tie. The member 13 is then positioned on the other side of the rail base with the wedge portion 28 disposed between the edge of the rail base and the flange 23. The member 13 may then be driven longitudinally of the rail, in a direction toward the tie, to force the wedge 28 into the space between the angular-ly disposed flange 23 and the adjacent edge of the rail base, thereby exerting a firm wedging grip between the flange 23 and the adjacent edge of the rail, and also effecting a firm grip of the jaws 14- and 15 on the opposite edge of the rail.
While I have illustrated my invention in one specic embodiment, it will be obvious that modifications might be made without departure from the spirit of the invention. It will therefore be understood that I contemplate all variations in structure coming within the scope of the appended claims.
This application is a division of my copending application, Serial 715,537, filed May 24:, 1924.
