Be it known that I, WALTER H. PIERCE, :i citizen of the United States, and resident of W'atertown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Separable Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specifica-`- tion, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to separable fasteners. It is among the objects of the invention to provide a superior attachment of separable fasteners to the carrying fabric..
In the drawings, which show a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fastener;

Fi 4 illustrates the construction and relative arrangement of certain fastener parts prior to assembly thereof with their carrying fabric.
Referring to the drawings and to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, I have shown a conventional fastener typified by the stud 5 and socket 6, containing a spring 7. The socket 6. prior to assembly thereof with its carrying fabric, presents (as best viewed in Fig. 4) a projecting hollow rivetv 8 having a closed end 9. To secure the socket or any other fastener part desired to the carrying fabric 10, I have provided a securing part including a cap or anvil 11 enclosing a cutting and clenching part 12, which presents vcentrally an aperture approximating in diameter the diameter of the tubular rivet 8, as viewed in Fig. 4. The clenching part 12 is preferably supported against the anvil or cap 11 over a substantial area adjacentits outer edge, while its inner edg. is thrown downwardly, preferably arcuately as indicated, to provlde a cutting edge, which is preferably the inner edge 13, and also to provide, between the anvil or cap 11 and the cutting and clenching part, a space '14 into which thatortion of the fabric which is bodily separate therefrom by the cutting action between the rivet andv cutting and clenchin art'12 `is forced and highly compressed. e high compression of this material has been found greatl to add to the security of the fasteningfand:

Where, as shown in the preferredv embodiment of my invention illustrated, a shoulder 15 is provided by the socket immediately adjacent the bottom of the tubular portipn 8, I have found that this shoulder pressing against the cutting and clenching portlon acts greatly to compress the cut-out material enclosed in the space above the clenching plate.
' The construction illustrated presents other advantages. Thus, during the initial portion of the crushin of the closed end tubular rivet, a considera le area or surface is presented against the anvil or cap 11, which considerable area greatly reduces the likelihood of marking of the cap or of flaking enamel therefrom where any enamel or other coating 1s applied. During the initial portion of the rlvet upsetting operation, the bearing against the lnner surface of the cap is also` somewhat cushioned by the interposed cut-out portion of the material, which material subsequently, underv great pressure, ows into all corners of the space above the clenching plate. Any suitable form of hand or other press may be used to sup ly the assembling pressure, the die above t e cap preferably providing a'close fit against a. considerable portion of the surface thereof.
The ca 11 and clench plate 12 are preferably he d together by a flanged-over portion 2O on the edge of 'the cap, such Aedge portion preferably coming opposite an adjacent surface of the socket or other fastener parts 6, so that' the material at 21 is considerably compressed while the material lying inwardly of this base 21. is less compressed and therefore in a sense expanded within the recess provided beneath the -clenching part 12. This greatly increases the effectiveness of the grip on the fabric, which grip i always maintained by reason of the distortion of the parts. The compressed `material within the ca serves to prevent any possible loosening o the clench between the rivetand clench pllate. Y
