I Be it known that I, HORACE S. Pivr'rnnson, Jr., a citizenjof the United States, residing at Lewisport,in the county of Hancock and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Inter locking Guard, of'which the following is a specification. V l 1 This invention. relates to mowing machines and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved'means for interlocking the guards of the finger bar together, so as to prevent movement of the guards in relation to one another and the consequent working loose of the guards.

Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for connecting the guards of the mowing machine together in such a manner, that the guards will always be held in correct alignment and prevented from moving'in relation to one another, and thereby" preventing the damaging of the guards caused by the guards vibrating against one another. I

A further object of. the invention is to provide a novel guard for'mowing machines which can be readily connected or disconnected from' the finger bar without disconnecting the other guards from the finger bar, the. guards carrying novel means for permitting the interconnection thereof A still further object of this invention is -to provide an improved interlocking guard for mowlng machines of the above character, which will be durable and eificlent 1n use, one which will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a finger bar of a mowing machine showing the improved guards connected therewith.

'which is adapted to extend through the opening 14 formed in the depending offset extension 13 of the arm 11 of the adjacent guard, when the guards are in their assembled position on the finger barA. As shown the bill 16 of the hook 15 is adapted to engage the shoulder 17 formed by the depending-offset extension 14 and this bill can be tapered ifso desired in order to facilitate the insertion thereof through the opening M.

In use of the improved guards the outermost guard B has the hook 15 thereof ex- I tended through a suitable opening formed in "the outer shoe 19 ofthe cutter bar. The

next adjacent guard B is then placed in position and the hook 15 is inserted through the opening 14 of the guard already placed in position. The other guards are placed in position in the same manner, until the last guard is in place. This guard can be sestood that the attaching portions 10 Ofthe guards B are secured by bolts 22 to the finger bar in the ordinary manner.

In Figures l'to 3 inclusive I have shown the arms 11 and 12 formed integral with the guards, but it is to be understood that the arms 11 and 12 can be formed separate from the guards and made of sheet metal or the like.

As shown in Figure 5 of the drawings the body portion of the guard is provided with a longitudinaly extending groove 26, and a transversely extending groove 27 at the inner terminal thereof. The interlocking means in this form is broadly designated by the reference character :28 and as shown includes a cross bar 29 having the central portion thereof provided with a forwardly projecting tongue 30 which is adapted to seat in the longitudinal :groove 26 in the body portion 25 of the guard. The cross bar 29 of course seats in the cross or transverse groove 2'? and can be secured thereto by means of a bolt or the like 31. The bar 29 projects equal distances from the opposite side of the body portion 25 of the guard and one end of the bar is provided with a depending otlset extension 32, while the other end of the guard is provided with a hook33. The otfset'extension 32 can be .provided with a square opening 34 ii so desired. The guards B in the modified form are connected together in the same manner as shown in Figure l of the drawings and function in the same way.

It is obvious that when the guards are 'constructed in accordance with this invention that the same will be firmly interlocked and that movement thereof will be absolute- This prevents the working loose of the guards and prevents the hammering of the guards against one another and thus saves the guards from becoming mutilated. Owing to the construction of the interlocking means, the guards can be easily removed from the finger bar A.

Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention.

What I claim .as new is:

1. The combination with a finger bar of a mowing machine of a plurality of guards secured to the bar, eyes carried by one side of each guard, and *hooks carried by the other side of each guard for engaging in said eyes.

2. As a new a-rticle'ot manufacture, a guard for cutter bars comprising abody, laterally extending arms carried by the opposite sides of the body,- an eye carried by one end of one arm and a hook carried by the outer end of the other arm.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a guard for cutter bars comprising a body, laterally extending arms carried bythe body, a depending outwardly extending otl'set extension formed on the terminal .of one arm and having an opening therein, and a hook formed on the terminal of the other arm.

The combination with a finger bar of a mowing machine, ofa plurality of guards secured to the bar laterally extending arms carried by the-opposite sides of each guard, a laterally extending offset eye formed on the terminal of one arm, and a hook formed on the terminal of the other arm, the bill of the hook terminating in a plane below theupper face of the arm, the hooks of the guards being adapted to engage theeyes of the adjacent guards, the body of the eyes being adapted to engage the lower faces of the arms carrying the hooks, and the bills of the hooks being adapted to engage .the arms carrying the eyes directly inward HORACE SMITH PATTERSON, JR.
