IIIUH O. F. ECKARD oIL cu Filed March 30. 1925 WITNESS x Patented Get. 27, 1925.
.PATENT` QFFICE.
OBEID F. ECKABD, OE HICKRY, NORTH CAROLINA.
OIL CAN.
Application filed March 3B, 1925. Serial Nvo. 19,424.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, Oene F. Eemian, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hickory, in the county of Catawba and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful improvements in Oil Cans, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to improvements .in valves for use in cans and the like and contemplates the provision of a novel form of valve which is arranged within the bottom of a can and which includes a valve operating rod which extends through the upper cover of the oil can and which includes such spring compression means therein as will readily and easily seat the valve.
Another object of the invention is to provide a valve casing upon and wit-hin the bottom of the oil can and which extends below the bottom an appreciable distance and which owing to its position adjacent one side of the can, may be readily and easily placed over the breather cap of an internal combustion engine and upon pulling the valve rod upwardly the valve will then be opened and cause the oil to drain into the breather cap.
l lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims. y
Figure 1 is an elevation of a can in section and showing the relative position of the valve, valve casing and valve operating rod therefor. y
Figure 2 is avertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 isa similar view taken on line -3-3 of Figure 1 and showing the construction of the valve operating means.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates an oil can of the usual and ordinary construction which includes a raised bottom 11 and top 12, allv of the above is of the usual and well known construction and forms no part of the present application for Letters Patent but is merely shown for purposes of illustration in bringing forward the novel advantages ofthe above entitled invention. rlhe invention residing in the provision of atuhing 18 including an enlarged upper portion 14 which further includes a valve seat 15 adjacent the upper periphery and inner side thereof, the purpose of the valve seat 15 will be presently apparent. Extending inwardly from the inner sides of the tubing 18 is an annulus 16 including a substantially offset upwardly extending apertured collar 17 formed integral there with 'and Vhaving its apertured portion aligned centrally of the casing 13. The lower end 18 of a valve rod 19 extends through the apertured portion of the collar 17 and annular flange 16 an appreciable dis tance and includes adjacentthe lower end thereof, a pin member 20 arranged transversely thereof and extending outwardly upon the outer side walls of the valve rod 19 an appreciable ldistance in order that a compression spring 21 which encircles the lower end 18 of the valve rod 19 below the apertured collar 1'? and annular flange 16 will be held upon the lower end 18 of the valve rod 19 and have its opposite ends tensioned against the outer side of the apertured collar 1l' and the upper side of the pin 2O whereby the valve rod 19 will be normally tensioned downwardly Arranged upon the valve rod 19 and encircling the same is a composition valve 22 which may be formed of any pliable substance such as rubber, fabric and the like and which is adapted to be snugly seated within the valve 'seat 15 provided in the upperV periphery 111 of the tubing or casing 13 and held normallyV seated through `the spring action of the compression spring 21. In order to provide means upon the valve rod 19 for holding the valve 22 upon the valve rod 19 at a suitable point and to preventthe same from sliding or reciprocating upon the valve rod 19l and hold the same rigid so that the same will reciprocate with the valve rod 19 as an integral part thereof, l provide al pin 23 which extends transversely through the valve rod '19 at an appreciable distance above thek upwardly eX- tending integrally formed collar 17 onthe annular flange land which pinl 23 has interposed therebetween and vtheunder side of the valve 22, a. washer or spacing element 24 in order to prevent the downward movement of the valve 22 upon the valve rod 19. ln order to provide means upon the valve rod 19 for restricting the movement of the valve 22 in an opposite directionthereon, ll provide a lock washer' 25 which `"en-'circles the valve rod 19 and engagespthe upper side of the valve 22 and which is in turn held against accidental displacement and reciprocation upon the valve rod 19-.tln'oughtlie` valve rod 19 and willbe` normally seat-edy within its seat 15 provided in the 'tubing or casing 13tli'rough the instrumentality of the compression spring 21. The upper portion of the valve rod 19 extends through an opening 27 providedin'the top 12 of the can 10 and also through a casing 28 having a restricte'd'entrance opening 29 provided in the lower end thereof and a relatively large att-aching flange 30 upon the upper periphery thereof and which may be welded or otherwise secured to the under side ofthe top or cover' 1201i` the can 10. Encir'cling the valve rod19v within the casing 28' is a compression spring 31' which has its upper end engaging the under side of the cover or 'top 1:2 ofthe can 10' and its opposite end tensioned against a pin 32 extending transversely of and outwardly an appreciable distance from the valve rod' 19. Fixed to the valve rod 19 upon the upper and adjacent the outer end thereof is a j amb nut 83 which includes a disk, washer or the like Si which engages the upper side thereof, encircling the valve rod 19 and normally lying {iush with the upper side or top of the cover 12 ofthe can 10.
Mounted upon the outer andupper free end of thevalve rod 19 is a disk 35 which forms a hand orV linger engaging portion in order. that t-he valve rod may be easily lifted, or reciprocated in order that the valve; 22 may be selectively disengaged and closed within its seat 15 andl owing to the multiple arrangement of the compression springs 21 and 31 respectively itv will be notedthat the valve 22 will; be seated and held against accidental displacement.
In the mode of operation of the present invention,` it will be clearly apparent that this valve rod when raisedwill compress the retractile springs 211 and 31 respectively and in so doing the valve 22 willcbe unseated within its valve seat 15 and that the washer or disk 34- andl jamb nut 33' included upon the upper and outer portion of the valve rod 119 will also be lifted upwardly inI a similar manner with the valve 22- andl in so doing the oil or other substance contained within the can 10 will be causedto drain through the casinaa or tubing 13' in; the manner set forth. Then releasing the disk or hand hold 35 provided upon the upper and outer end of the valve rod- 19, it is manifest that the valve rod: when moving downwardly will ycause the diskl or loclrwasher 34v to engage the upper side-of the top or cover 12 of the 1Q in. auch a to.. limit the downwardfmovement of the valve;22 within its seat 15 in order that the' spring tension exercised or stressed upon the valve 22 within its seat 15 will be solimited so that the valve will not be cut or mashed or in any way warped in order that the same will always be as effective as originally. This washer 811s and jamb nut 33, it will be noted will restrict the downward movement of the valve 22 withinv its seat in order to prevent this great dificulty.
The invention is susceptible of various changes inv its form, proportions and minor details of construction7 and the right is herein reserved to malte such changes as properly fall within lthe scope of the appended claims.
