Be it known that HAZEL DAVIS, a. citizen of the United States. of America, residing at Camden, in the county of Quachita; and State. of Arkansas, has invented new and useful Improvements inAuxiliary Handlesfor Sadirons, of. whichthe following .is .a specification.

It, is. well known. style smoothing sad-iron, wherein the handle and the body of the iron'are in one piece, a holding cloth or the like is necessary-for gripping the. handle which is very hot, thereby preventing burning the hand.

The purpose of the present invention is to provide, in a holder which is in the form of an auxiliary handle, a construction including means for clamping engagement with th integral handle on the sad-iron, thereby preventing the user from burning the hand.

Another purpose is the provision of means carried by the auxiliary handle for lifting the sad-iron from the stove, so that the auxiliary handle can be subsequently attached.

Still another purpose is the provision of an auxiliary handle including spring tensioned jaws which firmly grip the hand gripping part of the handle on the sad-iron in such wise as to hold the auxiliary handle in a substantially perpendicular position and at the same time allow the sad-iron to accommodate itself to the surface being smoothed and to the irregularities of the ironing-board.

It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative and that, while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modifications of detail and desired proportions may be made in the apparatus according to the circumstances.

The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

.The. auxiliary-handle comprises grip member lwhich may be constructed of' any suitable, material, preferably Wood, fiber or the like and which may be any suitable shape and length, .and extending longitudinally therethrough is an elongated bolt 5. The bolt 5 has a head 6 at one end and threaded on its opposite reduced end 7 is a 'nut 8. This bolt 5 passes through the end supports 9 and 10, the support 9 being disposed between the head 6 and the end of the hand grip member 4 while the support 10 is positioned between the nut 8 and the shplu lzdercaused to be formed by the reduced en v The auxiliary handle includes a bolt 11, the opposite reduced ends of which are threaded at 12. A clamp 13 comprising the jaws 14: is provided for engagement with the handle which is integral with the smoothing sad-iron. This clamp is approximately the length of the integral handle. The upper parts 15 of the two jaws of the clamp are arcuate in cross section, while the lower portions 16 are similarly shaped but of larger diameter and are adapted to grip against opposite sides of the handle 3.

The opposite ends of the upper parts 15 of the two jaws have downturned ears or" lugs 17 which have registering apertures 18 for the reduced threaded ends 12 of the bolt 11. The ears or lugs 17 engage against the shoulders caused to be formed by the reduced threaded ends which also pass through the lower ends of the end supports 9 and 10. Suitable nuts 19 engage with the threaded ends 12 for forcing the ears or lugs 17 against the shoulders. However, a semicircular hook 20 is provided and one end thereof has an extension 21 which is apertured to also engage with one of the threaded ends 12 prior to tightening the nut. This hook is disposed so that it may engage with the usual handle which is integral with the smoothing sad-iron for the purpose of lifting the sad-iron from the stove or burner 0r fire prior to attaching the auxiliary handle.

A spilt spring tube 22 is provided for the purpose of straddling the upper portions 15 of the two jaws, whereby the adjacent edges 23 of the split spring tube may engage with the crotches 24 between the upper and lower parts 15 and 16 of the jaws of the clamp for the purpose of holding the jaws tightly against the hand grip 3 of the sad-iron' One of the portions 16 of one of the jaws of the clamp terminates in an extension '25 with Which the finger may engage for springing one of the jaws to permit the clamp to be engaged with and disengaged from the hand grip 3 of the sad-iron.

The invention having vbeen set forth, what is claimed is:

1. A device for the purpose indicated comprising opposed complemental clamping jaws having cross sectionally arcuate portions for engagement with the hand grip of a sad-iron, upstanding supports carried at the opposite ends of the jaws, and an auxiliary hand grip spanning said supports.

2. A device for the purpose indicated comprising opposed complemental clamping jaws having cross-sectionally arcuate portions for engagement with the hand grip of a sadiron, upstanding supports carried at the opposite ends of the jaws, an auxiliary hand grip spanning said supports, and a split tube straddling the jaws to tension the same.

3. A device for the purpose indicated comprising a clamp consisting of complemental jaws, a split tube straddling the jaws for tensioning the same, hand grip supports disposed at opposite ends of the clamp, means to fasten the supports to theclamp to prevent lateral swinging movement relative to the clamp, and an auxiliary hand grip mounted at the upper ends of the supports.
