UNITED STATES NATHAN WAR-SHAW, NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDABLE' BOX.
Application filed June 11, 1924. Serial No. 719,349.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, NATHAN VVARSHAWV, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Foldable Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a class of knockdown containers.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a box with a body and a separate cover designed to be employed for holding merchandise which may be displayed for sale on show cases, counters and elsewhere without removal from the box, and the cover is of a form cut from a single foldable sheet or blank for providing when its parts are assembled a card for displaying advertising matter in conjunction with the goods as well as providing for supporting the body of the box on an incline in the cover to conspicuously display the goods. The invention resides mainly in the provision in conjunction with a suitable type of body of a separate cover folded from a single blank for providing a substantially rectangular body with a top plate, side walls and end walls whereby the cover may be removably fitted over the box body in which merchandise-may be packed. One of the end walls of the body of the cover is formed with an inwardly folded section, a flap section disposed upon the top plate and a display card section in upstanding position adjacent the other end wall. By slitting parts of the blank at the juncture of the flap section with the display card section a bracket in the form of an angular strip protruding above the flap section is provided for supporting on an incline the body of the box with its contents for being displayed, and the second end wall of the body of the cover has an inwardly folded section with a locking tongue detachably engaging the edges of the slitted part of the flap section for releasably holding the flap section to the top plate.
A further object of the invention is to provide a foldable box of a simple and efficient construction which may be made in any suitable size.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more fully explained with reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference form of blank from which is ing the next stage of folding the blank to.
form the cover. 7
Fig. 4 is a reduced perspective view, partly broken away, showing the cover when completely folded, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective View, partly broken away, showing the folded cover in position as used for supporting the body of the box.
The box has a substantially rectangular body, as 10, which may be of any well known type out and scored preferably from a single sheet or blank of card board or other flexible material which is assembled by its parts being folded together for holding merchandise.
A. separate cover 11 is provided for being removably fitted on the body to inclose its contents, and this cover is cut from a single sheet or blank, as 11 Fig. 1, of card board or other foldable material to provide a substantially rectangular body 12 composed of a top plate 13, side walls 14:, 14L end walls 15, 15 and pairs of infold strips 16, 16 and 17, 17 which are of sizes so that when folded together, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, the body 12 of the cover will be provided for being removably applied upon the body 10 of the box over its open top.
The end wall 15 of the body 12 of the cover has an inwardly foldable section, as 18, a flap section, as 19, and a display card section, as 20. At the juncture of the flap section 19 with the display card section 20 is a bracket 21, and the end wall 15 of the body 12 of the cover has an inwardly foldable section 22 with a marginal strip, as 23, having a locking tongue, as 24c.
The blank 11 is scored lengthwise in spaced relation to its side edges, as at A and B, for providing the side walls 14, 14; of the cover 12, and the end walls 15, 15 of the cover are formed by scoring, as at C and D, the blank in spaced proximity to its ends. The top plate 13 of the cover is, therefore, of substantially a rectangular shape of a cover 12 by size slightly larger than the body 10 of the box. One end part of the blank is slitted lengthwise, as at E and F, from the scoring C to its adjacent end to provide the pair of infoldable strips 16, 16, and the other end part of the blank is likewise slitted lengthwise, as at G, and H, to its adjacent end to provide the pair of infoldable strips 17, 17. In spaced relation to the end scoring C the blank has two spaced parallel scorings, as I and J, to provide the inwardly-foldable section 18 which is of a size approximately similar to the size of the end wall 15, and the central portion of the blank extending from the scoring J is transversely scored, as at K, whereby the flap section 19 and display card section 20 are formed. The bracket 21 of the cover is provided by slitting, as at Land M, spaced parallel parts lengthwise of the blank at the juncture of theflap section 19 with the display card section 20, and the blank is scored crosswise, as at N and O, between the ends of the slits I and M. The outer edges of the parts of these slits at the scoring K may also'be cut out, as at P and Q. In spaced relation to the end scoring D the blank has two spaced parallel scorings, as R and S, to provide the inwardly foldable section 22 and the marginal strip 23. The section 22 and the end wall 15 are of approximately similar sizes, while the strip 23 is considerably narrower in width. In the central part of this strip are two spaced diverging slits, as T and U, which extend from the scoring S to the second end of the blank to provide the locking tongue 24, and this tongue is of a width so that it may be disposed through the space of the flap section 19' between the slits L and M whereby the wedge shaped ends of the tongue may be disposed inoverlapping arrangement on the flap section when the bracket 21 is folded into position,
These parts are assembled to form the the blank being folded on the scorings A, I3, C, D so that the walls 14, 14 and 15, 15 are disposed in right-angular directions from the underside of the top plate 13. The blank may then be folded on the seorings R and T for disposing the in fold section 22 toward lapping position against the end wall 15 with the strip 23 lying upon the underside of the top plate 13, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and with the folding of these parts the strips 17, 17 are bent inwardly between the end wall 15 and section 22 to releasably lock the side walls 14, 14 to the end wall 15 as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The blank isthen folded on the scoring C for disposing the end wall 15 toward the adjacent ends of the side walls 14, '14 and the strips 16, 16 are infolded so as to lap upon the end wall,15, and the blank is folded on the scoring I for disr posing the section 18 in lapping arrangemeat. on the strips 16, 16 for releasably locking the end wall 15 and side walls 14, 14 together. By folding the blank on the scoringd accordingly the flap section 19 will be disposed between the side walls and end walls upon the underside of the top plate 13, and by folding the blank on the scoring. K the display card section 20 may be disposed in upstanding position against the section 22 over the locking'tongue 24. The bracket strip 21 is then folded an ularly for protruding inwardly of the folded body of the cover, as shown in Fig; ,5, for supporting the body 10 of the box with its contents on an incline, and by adjusting the locking tongue 24 so'that its ends engage in lapping arrangement upon the parts ofgthe edges of the slits L and M of the flap section 19 this flap will be detachably fastened for also holding the bracket 21 an I the dis play card 20 in their unfolded positions, the display card serving to permit advertising matter to be displayed thereon, as occasion may require.
In the foregoing description, bodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore, I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent:
