FIXTURE-SUPPORTING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, REUBEN B. BENJAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful- One of the objects of my invention is provide improved means for so supporting a fixture that the fixture will-be permitted.
to align itself by its own weight, and so that the fixture will be supported by shock-ab sorbing means, thus prolonging the life of the lamp filament and preventing undue strain on the stem and supporting means.
Further objects will appear from a detailed description to follow and from the appended claims.
The construction shown in this application is a modification of the construction shown in my copending application, No. 512,767 which contains claims generic to both applications. In the drawings, in which two embodiments of my invention are shown Figure 1 is a vertical axial section through an outlet box showing a fixture stem and supporting means;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view sho-wing a different form.
Referring first to Figures 1', 2 and 3, the construction shown therein comprises a fixture stem 10, an outlet box 11, an outlet box cover 12, a fixture stud 13 secured in the outlet box 11, a fixed cup shaped supporting and fulcrum member 14 screwed onto the fixture stud 13, a vertically movable supporting and fulcrum member 15 screwed onto the upper end of the fixture stem 10, and a coil compression spring 16, having its lower end supported on arcuate shoulders 17, formed integral with the cupshaped member 14 and having its upper end pressing upwardly on the supporting and fulcrum member 15. The cup-shaped member 14 is. provided with apertures 18 for the passage of the wires from the outlet box to the fixture stem.
The fulcrum member 15 is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed fulcrum pro- ]ections 19 which engage the vertical guide grooves 20 formed in the cup-shaped supporting and fulcrum member 1 1. This tongue and vertical groove engagement permits the fixture stem 10 to swing in any direction'and to yield vertically and also holds the'fslidable fulcrum member 15 against lateral movement. It also holds the fulcrum 'In'ember '15 against rotation, thus preventing twisting of the wires which would result if thestem 10 were allowed to rotate.
It will be noted that the lower coil of the compression spring 16 is so large in diameter that it has to be contracted in order to insert it into the cup-shaped supporting member 14. After the lower coil of the spring has been inserted past the arcuate shoulders 17 it expands and is then held above the arcuate shoulders.
The construction shown in Fig. l is substantially the same as that just described. except that here the cup-shaped supporting and fulcrum member 21 is formed as part of an integral casting, which casting has a flange portion 22 forming the cover for the outlet box 11.
While I have shown but two forms of my invention, it is obvious that it may be embodied in other forms cover and defined by the claim.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
The'combination with a fixture stud and a fixture stem, of vertically yieldable means for supporting said fixture stem from said stud for limited universal swinging movement, comprising an inverted cup member screwed onto said stud and provided with a pair of oppositely disposed vertical guides and a vertical slidable fulcrum member secured to the upper end of said stem, a coil spring surrounding said stem and pressing upwardly on said slidable fulcrum member, said slidable member having a pair of oppositely disposed slidable devices engaging said guides, whereby the stem can tilt and yield vertically and whereby rotation of the stem is prevented and lateral movement of said ,vertically slidabler fulcrum,member is prevented; seiid-cupmember having rshoul- 5 der for supporting the lower end of said coil spring the opening in the lower end of "the 9111) memberbeing of snfficient size to member. 1 o
