NONFREEZING RADIATOR.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it lmown that HARRY A. DOUGLAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oelwein, in the county of Fayette and State of Iowa, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nonfreezing Radiators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in automobile radiators and means for keeping the circulating water therein from freezm fbne of the primary objects of my invention is to construct a radiator of a light material, such as aluminum, having aseries of elongated openings extending transversely through same and a wire mesh adapted to be placed over the front of the radiator for the purpose of preventing dust and other foreign matter from passing through the radiator onto the engine.
A further object of my invention, is to place electric coils of any well known construction, within two or more of the elongated transverse openings in the aluminum body of the radiator, for the purpose of preventing the water circulating from the radiator to the water jacket of an internal combustion engine from freezing in cold weather.
A further object of my invention, is to place a switch on the dash board of any automobile, so that the driver of the machine upon stopping same and leaving his car, can close the switch, thus turning the current into the electric coil and heating the water contained in the radiator.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of this character, that is simple in construction and operation, durable, eiiicient for the purpose intended and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a relatively low cost.
These and like objects of my invention will be better understood as the description of same proceeds and as is specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the radiator, partly in section showing the heating coils for same placed therein.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of my improved radiator showing same connected with the water circulating pipe leading through the engine cylinders, and
Figure 8 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, like characters will be used to designate like parts in the different views.
The numeral 1 indicates as a whole, a radiator constructed in accordance with my invention, which is provided with a series of elongated transverse openings 2, of various sizes, 3 indicates the side of my improved radiator and 4 is the water pipe leading therefrom, which is connected to the intake pipe 5 of the water jacket, not shown, by means of the coupling 6, which is of any desirable and well known construction.
Positioned within two or more of the transverse elongated openings 2 are electric coils 7, which are connected to the ignition system of the car, not shown, and having the free ends of the wire connected to a switch carried on the dash board of the ma chine, not shown, so that the closing of the circuit for heating the water within the radiator is directly under the control of the driver, and does not necessitate the leaving of his feet in order to energize the electric coils and heat the water within the radiator 1. In order to prevent dirt and other foreign matter from passing through the elongated transverse openings 2, onto the engine of the machine, not shown, and onto the electric heating coils 7 I have placed a fine wire mesh 8 over the front of the radiator and have secured same in place by means of hooks 9 or any other suitable fastening means.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I realize that various minor changes may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, therefore, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, nor to the combination and arrangement of parts.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A non-freezing automobile radiator comprising a body having a plurality of transversely extending air passageways therethrough for normally permitting the cooling of the Water in the radiator, electric heating elements arranged in certain oi the passageways for heating the water in the radiator during the Winter season, and means disposed in front of the body preventing the passage of foreign substance through the body and on said heating elements.
