CUSHION HEEL.
Application filed May 22, 1922. Serial No. 562,678.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM P. Cosrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of IVisconsin, have invented a certain new and 'useful Improvement in Cushion Heels, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying lrawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to cushion heels.
One object of the present invention is the provision of a rubber or composition heel having improved cushioning characteristics, the effectiveness of which will not be impaired by wear upon the tread surface.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
One embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section view of a cushion heel constructed in accordance with the present invention and shown applied to a shoe of standard form.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the cushion heel of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
The heel selected for illustration comprises a body portion 10 of usual contour, conforming in general to the shape of the heel lift 11 of the shoe 12. The body portion is constructed of suitable resilient material, such as rubber or rubber composition so commonly employed in heels of this type. The bottom or tread surface 13 of the heel shown is substantially flat except for the usual series of sockets 14 for receiving the countersunk heads of the fastening nails 15.
To insure ample resiliency or yieldability of the heel to effect the desired cushioning effect, the effective cross sectional area of the stock in the upper portion of the heel is reduced by the provision of a series of pockets 16 and 17 therein. These pockets are distributed throughout the upper portion of the heel and extend from the top surface thereof downwardly to an area some-' what above the tread surface 13. In the heel shown, the central pocket 16 is somewhat larger than the others and is confined within the series of nail receiving sockets 14'. The other pockets 1? are disposed throughout the marginal portion 18 of the heel and arranged to alternate with the sockets 14.
The weight of the wearer is distributed throughout and sustained by the upstanding portions remaining between the pockets 16 and 17, the yieldability of these portions insuring an effective cushioning action. Since this cushioning action is due to the construction of the upper portion of the heel, itis clear that it will not be materially impaired by continued wear on the tread surface.
Various changes may be made in the em.- bodiment of the invention hereinabove described, without departing from or sacriiicing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A cushion heel comprising a body portion of resilient material having a marginal nail receiving portion, and means for increasing the yieldability of said marginal portion comprising a series of spaced pockets formed in said marginal portion and extending downwardly toward the tread surface of the heel, the remaining stock between adjacent pockets of said series providing an chorage for the nails and providing a lateral support for the walls of the heel.
2. A cushion heel comprising a body portion of resilient material having a relatively large pocket formed in the central portion thereof and a marginal nail receiving por tion, means for increasing the yieldability of said marginal portion comprising a series of spaced pockets formed in said marginal portion and extending downwardly toward the tread surface of the heel, the remaining stock between adjacent pockets of said series providing anchorage for the nails and providing a lateral support for the walls of the heel, and nail receiving sockets in the tread surface of the heel intermediate said pockets.
