Application fi1e 1 May 16,
c To all-10720022. it may concern:
a. British subject, residing at Brooks, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Cam 5 ada, have invented new and useful Inn: provements in lVindow Lifts and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to builders hardware and has for its objecttheprovision of a. no veleombined window lift and securing device or catch which will" hold the window in closed position and prevent it from being opened from the outside by an. unauthorized person,2the devlce automate.
cally fastening when the window is closed.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is constructed from an extremely small number of parts and which will therefore be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and at the same time positive in action, efficient and durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which.
" Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device,
Figure 2 is a vertical section therethrough showing it associated with a window,
Figureil is an end elevation,
Figure 1 is a detail view of the keeper.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the numeral designates the body of the device which is formed from a single piece of sheet metal out and bent to the shape indicated so as to provide a compartment 11 defined by the sides 12 which terminate in attaching portions 13 which are provided with holes for the passage of nails, screws or other securing'elements. The upper extremity of the body 10 is formed with an elongated reflexly curved tongue 14 which constitutes the handle or lift by means of which the window A may be raised. Near its upper and lower ends the front of the body is formed with slots 15 and 16 respectively.
The device further includes a catch which is formed from an elongated strip 17 which is bowed or curved in shape and which has its upper end passed through the upper slot 15. The lower end of this strip is 1924. serial No 713,813.
. passedthroughthe slot16 and is bent into Be it known that I, .I'IARRY T. Piiinro'r'r,
angular shape to define a shoulder'19 and an inclined end 20 leading thereto. Riveted at 21 on the inside of the front portion of the body is a leaf spring 22 which bears against the lower end portion of the catch for normally holding it in its forw-ardmost position. r Mounted on the sill B over a suitable recess 23 therein, is a'keeper plate 2% having an opening 25 for the passage of the angular end of the catch.
Assuming that the device has been constructed and installed as above described, it is apparent that when the window is closed the engagement of the inclined end 20 of the catch with the edge of the opening 25 will cause the strip 17 to move rearwardly or toward the window sash until the shoulder 19 snaps under the plate or keeper 24. The spring 25 operates to hold this catch in its fastened position. To open the window it is necessary to push upon the curved strip 17 or catch so as to disengage the angular end from the keeper, whereupon the window may be lifted by pulling upon the handle or lift 14:.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided an extremely simple, inexpensive and yet highly efficient device for the purpose specified which will be neat and attractive in appearance and which is almost impossible to getout of order.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I chaim:
1. A combined window lift and catch, comprising a body member mounted upon a window sash and formed to provide a compartment, the upper end of said bodybeing formed with a handle, the front of the body being provided near its upper and lower ends with slots, a catch formed as a curved strip located in front of the body with its ends passing through said slots, the upper end being secured and the lower end free, said lower end having a shoulder and an inclined surface leading thereto, a spring urging said curved 'strip'otitwhidly, in combination With a keeper plate mounted upon the sill and havingan opening for the passage attire angular end of the'jcatch.
2. A device of the warmer described comprising a body formed from asingle piece of sheet metal havin'g angularly extending parallel sides definin-ga compart-v ment, said sides terminating in attaching portions, the upper endfof the body'terminating win an elongated refiexly curved tongi'i'e constituting a lift, said-body being provided in its front withuppr and lower slots, aqiurved catch extendingthrough both slots and "secured above the upper one, the
lower end of; thefc'atch being formed tovprovide a shoulder and an inclined --terminal iportion leading thereto, and a keeper plate ed to be mounted upon the sash rail of aat its upper end With a reduced tongue, the
upper portion of the body having a slot therein "forthe passage of said tongue, the
lower end of said catch member being formed with an 'angularly extending "shoulder adapted for engagement beneath the :keeper plate and terminating in an-inc'lined "eitension, a springsecured upon "the "rear side of the body and bearitn g 'against thelower end of the catch member and-a securing member passing through "the inter- *mediate portion :of the body and l'IllZO the 'sas'h'rail, said "securing member further *act- 1ng as azguide for the sashandsprm'g 'memher during movemenfithereof.
In testimony'w-hereof Iit'fllX my signature.
