Be it known that I, ARCHIE CLYDE Coun- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Closure Operator for Counter Guards, of which the following is a specification.

' scribed and finall My invention relates to awindow opening closure device, and, has for its object to provide a device for closing the opening, or passage in a theater ticket window, a bank window, such as the tellers window, receivers window, etc.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device which will be simple in construction, easily and quickly actuated for opening and closing the. passage and prove itself highly efiicient for the purpose intended.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists 'in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combina-,

tion of parts hereinafter more fully dey pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

lteferring to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 indicates a window, or its equivalent having an opening or passage 2 through which tickets, money,- papers and the like may be passed. 3 indicates a suitable support or table top.

In carrying out the aimv of my present invent'ion, I employ a suitablesupporting or base member 4 having the upright end ears 5 and 6. The base is suitablyfixed to the top 3 to one side of the opening 2 by any position behind a ticket window means, such for in is provided with an arm 8 which is suitably I fixed thereto. A suitably shaped closure plate 9 is suitably fixed'to the arm 8 and, when inits closed position, lies behind the opening 2 for closing the same. The lower edge of the closure plate 9 is provided with a rubber strip 10 to engage the top 3, as is manifest.

Ear 5 is provided with a suitable lug, or stop 10. The end of the arm 8 which is fixed to the shaft 7 is provided with a finger 11 adapted to engage the stop when the closure plate 9 is in its opening position'to limit the opening movement thereof. The stop 10' is preferably provided with a leather, or equivalent face 12;

The inner end of the rod 7 is provided with a lever 13 for moving the closure plate into its closed position. The lever 13 is suitably fixed to'the shaft 7, and, is provided with a suitable stop member 14, having a curved outer face 15. V

The referencecharacter 16 indicates a suitable latc-li-lever which is pivotally connected, as at 17, to the ear 6 at a suitable point below the stop 14. Thelatch-lever16 is pro vided with an upwardly; directed shoulder 18 adapted to engage one end of the stop 1 1 when in its uppermost position, as shown in Fig. .5, and, to engage the curved face of the stop when in its depressed position, as shown in Fig. 7. The reference character 19 indicates a suitable coiled spring which encircles a suitable portion of the shaft 7. The outer end 20 of the coiled spring 19 is suitably fixed to a lug 21 of the base 4 by such means, for instance, as a screw 22, and, the inner end of the coiled spring is suitably fixed to shaft 7, asis manifest, so that when the closure plate is closed,

the spring is under coiled tension, and, re

leased when the closure plate is in its open position.

The reference character 23 indicates a suitable spring member which is fixed at one end to the ear 6 by means of the pivot pin 17. The opposite, or outer end of the spring 23 is fixed to the latch-lever 16, so as to raise the lever 16 automatically whenever the closure plate'is moved into a closed position.

hen the closure plate 9 is in its closed position, the finger 18 engages the cam shoulder 1% locking or holding the closure plate in its closed position, thereby closing the opening 2. Now, when it is desired to raise the closure plate 9, the V operator merely presses down upon the latch-lever 16 with the finger and the coiled spring 19 will immediately cause the shaft 7 to turn thereby causing the closure plate 9 to move with the shaft into an upright position, as shown in Fig. 7.

From the foregoing description, it is evident that I provide a device for opening and closing an opening in a window, such for instance, as in a ticket cage, a cashiers cage in a banlr and like places.

It will be observed that I provide a device which is sin'iple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, easily and quickly manipulated to open and close an opening and one which will prove highly efficient for the purpose intended. I

The many advantages of the herein described invention will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.

I do not wish to be understood as having limited myself to the details of construction shown and described, but desire to have it understood that the invention I have shownin the drawings is merely illus ,trative, as it is manifest that various minor changes may be made in the exact construction and particular arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I reserve the right to make any such changes, or modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims when fairly construed.

What I claim is:

1. In combination with a wall having an opening therein, of a supporting base fixed in advance of the opening, a shaft mounted in said supporting base, a closure plate fixed to one end of said shaft, a coiled spring encircling one end of said shaft and fixed at one end to said shaft, a trigger mechanism for releasing the shaft and causing the closure plate fixed thereto to move upward in an arcuate path for opening the opening in the wall and a lever fixed to one end of said shaft for moving the closure plate to close the opening in the wall.

2. A cashiers window opening closure device comprising a supporting base having a bearing at each end, a shaft journaled in said bearings, a coiled spring encircling one end of said shaft and fixed at one end to said base, an opening closure plate fixed to one end of said shaft, means for locking said closure plate in its closed position behind the opening, trigger means for releasing the spring controlled shaft for automatically raising the closure plate in an arcuate path, means to limit the opening movement of said closure plate, and means for manually moving said closure plate into its closed position for closing the window opening.

3. A closure operator for counter guards comprising a supporting base, a shaft mounted in said base, a closure plate fixed to one end of said shaft and disposed to the rear of an opening for closing the opening, locking means for holding said shaft against movement and thereby holding the closure plate in its closed position, means for turning said shaft and simultaneously raising the closure plate in an arcuate path behind an opening in a counter guard when said locking means has been manually released, means for limiting the opening movement of said closure plate and means for manually turning said shaft for moving the closure plate into its closed position to the rear of the opening in the counter guard.
