rArsNr orrics JAMES C. WOODSON, OF EAST PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYL- VANIA.
ELECTRIC HEATER FOR FANS.
Application filed January 8, 1923. ,Serial No. 611,231.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES C. WOODSON, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of East Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Heaters for Fans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electrically heated devices and particularly to electrically heated blower fans. 1
The object of my invention isto provide a relatively simple, compact, inexpensive and easily installed heating unit for a portable blower fan.
In practicing my invention, I provide a tubular refractory resistor-supporting member on and in which a resistor member is Wound. The refractory supporting member is located in the nozzle of a blower fan and is secured to the closure member of the nozzle by a plurality of machine screws located invlongitudinally extending lugs integral with the refractory member. The closure member is provided with an integral depending flange to which a suitable terminal device is secured.
In the single sheet of drawings,
Figure 1 is a View, in side elevation, of a blower fan comprising the device embodying my invention, certain parts being cut away to show the interior construction thereof,
Fig. 2 is a view, in side elevation, of a refractory resistor-supporting member and a resistor located thereon, and
Fig. 3 is a view, in end elevation, of the refractory resistor-supporting member illustrated in Fig. 2.
A blower fan casing 11, of substantially volute form, has mounted therein a blower of the usual type, that is driven by a small electric motor which may be located either .within or without the casing 11. As these parts are of standard construction and constitute no part of my invention, it is not believed necessary or desirable to further illustrate and describe the same.
The casing 11 is provided with a tangentially extending nozzle portion '12 which may be provided with an outwardly flared end 13. 7
Within the nozzle 12 and extending longitudinally thereof and co-axially therewith,
is located a refractory resistor-supporting member 14 of substantially tubular shape.
The refractory electric-insulating member 14 is provided with a plurality-of symmetrically spaced grooves or slots 15 located in the edges of the tubular portion and with a pair of integral and longitudinally extending lugs 16 located on the outside of the tubular portion of the member 14 and in diametrally opposed position. Each of the lugs 16 is providedwith an opening 17 extending therethrough. A helicallv coiled resistor member 18 is wound on the inside and on the outside of the member 14, the ends of the resistor member being brought out through openings 19 extending radially through one wall of the tubular member 14.
The heating element, comprising the members 14 and 18, is held in its proper operative position against a perforated closure, member 21 by means of machine bolts 22 which extend through the openings 17, a nut 23 being provided on each of the bolts 22 to provide a spacing member between the inner surface of the closure member 21 and the adiacent end of the refractory member 14.
The closure member 21 is provided with a depending integral flange portion 24 against the inner surface of which is mounted a suitable terminal member 25 which extends through one wall of the nozzle 12 at the lower portion thereof, a suitable opening 26 being provided to permit of this. The ends of the resistor member 18 extend into the terminal device 25 at the upper end thereof and the ends of a suitable supply-.
circuit conductor 27 extend into the terminal device at the lower end thereof, suitable means, not shown, being provided in the terminal device for electrically connecting the ends of the supply-circuit conductors and the ends of the resistor member. A helical spring 28 has one end thereof extending into the terminal device 25 and surrounds the supply-circuit conductor 27 over a portion of its length to prevent undue kinking or bending thereof. The terminal device 25 is secured against the flange portion 24 by a machine screw 29, a nut 31 being provided thereon adjacent the rear surface of the device 25.
The heating element, comprising the refractory supporting member 14 and the resistor member 18 wound thereon, may be easily and quickly secured in its proper operative position against the inner surface of the closure member 31, and the terminal device 25 may also be located and held in its proper operative position while the closure member is disassociated from the casing 11. When the closure member is placed in-its proper operative position against the outer end of the nozzle 12 and secured thereagainst by any suitable means, (not shown), the
heating element is located in its proper operative position within the nozzle 12 and is adapted to heat the air forced therethrough ported thereby.
and out of the perforated closure member 21. In case of necessity of repair of the heating element, it may be easily andquickly' cations are intended to be covered bythe apcover member, and a resistor located on both surfaces of the tubular member and sup- 2. In a motor-driven blower, in combination, a blower casing having an open end portion of substantlally tubular form, a perforated cover member secured against the outer end of said open end portion, and a double-layer heating element in said open end portion and secured against the inner surface of said cover member.-
3. In a motor-driven blower, the combination with an open-end blower casing, of a perforated cover for said open end, a tubular refractory member secured to said cover member, and having a pluality of spaced notches in each of the end surfaces, and a resistor member extending along the inner and the outer surfaces of said refractory member and maintained in proper operative position relatively thereto by said notches.
4. In a motor-driven blower, in combina tion, an open-end blower casing, a perforated cover for said open end, a heating element in said casing adjacent said open end 'and supported by said cover, and a terminal block supported by said cover member.
5. In a motor-driven blower, in combination, an open-end blower casing, a perforated cover for said open end having a depending integral extension, a heating element in said casing adjacent said open end, secured to and supported by said cover, and a terminal block projecting into said casing, secured to and supported by said depending integral extension.
6." In a motor driven blower, in combination, an open-end blower casing, a removable cover for said open end havinga depending integral extension, a heating element in said casing and a terminal block beneath said casing, said heating element and said terminal block being supported by said cover and said integral extension re-' spectively and being removable from said b ower with said cover.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this second day of January, 1923.
JAMES C. WOQDSON.
