WAGON-POLE TIP.
Appnaan sied January 15,1924. serial No. 686,310.
poles and has morespecific reference to atiptherefor7 the primary object of the invention residing in the provision of such a tip that includes means forv eifectively maintaining the neck yoke ring of the animal harness in `permanent engagement with the end of the poi-le for thereby preventing any accidental displacement of the same.
An additionalobject of the invention resides in the provision of such a wagon pole tip whereby the means for retaining said neck yoke in positive engagement with the end of said pole is prevented from becoming accidentally released and thereby allowing said ring to become disengaged from the end of the pole..
An additional object of the present invention resides in the provision of such a device that may be readily and cheaply applied to practically all types of wagon poles now employed and wherein the nature of the same is such as to operate effectively under all conditions.
With the above and other objects in view as thenature of the invention'will be better understood. The same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
ln this drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding` parte throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevational view partly in cross section, of a wagon pole tip` con* structed in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown as actually applied to the end of a conventional form of wagon pole,
Figure 2 is a detail transverse sectional view taken substantially upon the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective of the retaining bolt element of the present invention.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, 5 designates a wagon pole that is equipped at its forward end with a guard Y strap is of conventional form.
rounded portion projecting beyond the tip of the pole so as to form a ring or eye for van obvious purpose.-
The: major portion of thisfguardviron` or same embodies a relatively U-shaped strap member adapted for permanent positioning upon the `endof; said pole, the same being secured thereto `through .the medium ofva `desirable number of bolt and nut connections 8.
The arm member of this guardiron or strap upon the under-side of said pole 5 is formed intermediate its' ends with a pendant U-shaped portion 9, the parallel leg por tions of which are formed with registering openings through which extends a relatively elongated retaining bolt 10. The rear end of said retaining bolt 10 is equipped with a stop nut 11 while the front end of said bolt extends considerably forwardly of said U-shaped portion 9 and is bent upwardly at this end for providing a retaining finger 12 that preferably engages said guard iron or strap when this bolt is in the position shown in Figure 1.
That is, the.,
.iron or strapv 6 having its intermediate orI The opening in the foremost parallel leg Y of said U-shaped portion is of key-shape as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, and adapted for engagement within the slotted portion ofthis opening is a lug 13 formed upon said retaining bolt 1() for preventing when this bolt is in the locking` position shown in Figure 1, the bolt from being accidentally or even manually turned.
For maintainingr this bolt in its foremost position for obviously retaining the neck yoke ring over the end of the pole and between said guard iron orV strap and the retaining bolt 10, there is provided an eX- pansible coiled spring 14. This coiled spring 1/1 encircles the retaining bolt at a point betweenv the parallel leg portions of the U-shaped element 9.
From the foregoing'it will at once be obvious that in order to place the neck yoke ring upon the end of the pole or to remove the same therefrom, it will be necessary to manually retract the bolt 11 after which the same may be rotated for consequently swinging the finger 12 downwardly away from the end ofthe pole.
The specific operation together with nu-` merous advantages of a wagon pole tip of this character will be readily appreciated by those slilledrin the art` and even vthough I haveV herein set forth thc most practical embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor vchanges may be made therein Without departing from the spirit and scope of the appendedclaim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to 'secure by Let`v ters Patent, is :--V y A Wagon pole tip including' a strip having endportions adaptedfto be applied to the opposite sides oi the pole7 one end; portion of the strip being provided at Va point between its ends with a U-shaped bent portion, one side of the U-shaped bent portion being provided with a key-hole slot Vand the opposite side lbeing providedwith an opening, a bolt passing through fthe opening'and the -key-holeslot and turnable therein, andhavingfan end portion projecting `forwardly of the XU`shaped bent portion; saith-forwardly projecting portion of the bolt having an outwardly curved extremity, the bolt being providedat a 'point 'between its ends with a lug adapted to enter the key-hole slot, a
member at the rear end of the bolt and adapted to .bear` against the outer surface of that side of the U-shaped portion Which is provided with the opening, and a spring in the U-shaped bentV portion coiled around the boltand having one end bearing ,against the sideof the U-shaped bent portion pro- Vvided with the openingand the'otheren'd bearing against the lug for normally holding the lug in the vkey-hole slotn p p I In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature.
