AUTOMATIC SWITCH.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHELE BoMANo, a subject of the King of Italy residing at Norristown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and usefulImprovementsin Automatic Switches, of which the followlng is a spear fication.
This invention relates to a light controlling switch, the general object of the invention being to provide means for operating the switch by a door in such a manner that current will be supplied to the lamps when the door is opened and the circuit to the lamps will be opened when the door is closed, thus eliminating a person groping for a switch upon entering a room.
Another object-of the invention is to pro vide means whereby the switch can beheld in closed position after the door is closed so as to prevent the door from breaking the circuit.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and s ecifically pointed out in the appended c aims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a View showing the invention in position where it will be actuated by the opening and closin of a door.
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevation with parts broken away and showing the switch parts in operative osition.
Figure 3 is an en ar ed end elevation with parts broken away s owing the parts in similar position.
As shown in these views the switch comprises an insulated plate 1 upon which is pivoted the switch parts 2 and 3. The terminal of one part is electrically connected with the lamps and the other with the source of supply so that when the parts are in contact the lamps will be lighted. The part 3 is provided with a handle 4 and said part will be held in its adjusted position by means of a leaf spring5 placed under the same, this spring engaging acam member 3 on the part 3 and thus acting to frictionally hold the said part in its adjusted position.

A stem 6 passes through the part 2, the lowin a bracket 7 on the plate. A coil spring 8 has its convolution surrounding the stem below the part 2 and a sprin 9 surrounding the stem in a like manner a ove the part 2. A head 10 is placed on the outer end of the stem and forms a bearing for the outer end of the spring 9.
The parts are so arranged that the head 10 will be engaged by the door A when the same is in closed position so that the stem will be pushed inwardly and the springs 8 and 9 compressed to move the part 2 away from the part 3. Thus the circuit to the lamps will be broken when the door is closed. As soon as the door is opened the springs 8 and 9 will expand, thus moving the part 2 against the part 3 and closing the circuit to the lamps so that said lamps will be lighted. In order to keep the device closed when a person is in the room and desires to shut the door it is simply necessary to move the part 3 against the part 2 by its handle 4, this movement being sufiicient to compress the spring 8 so that when the door is closed the part 2 cannot move away from the part 3. Thus the lamps will remain lighted after the door is closed.
This invention will light the lamps in a room as soon as the door is opened, thus eliminating groping for a switch in a dark room. The member 3 and its handle will not only provide means for keeping the circuit closed after the door is closed but will also provide means for breaking the circuit when the door is openedas the part 3 can be moved away from the part 2 with the springs in normal position.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is X 1. A circuit controlling device of the character described comprising a pair of switch members, a handle connected with one member, a stem passing through the other member, means for slidably receiving the stem, a spring arranged on each side of the member last mentioned to hold the same under tension and normally out of. and operatively in contact with the other member, and a head on said spring held member. 1
2. A switch of the character described comprising aninsulated plate, switch members pivotally secured to said plate, a leaf spring engaging one switch member for frictionally holding the same in adjusted position, a bracket on the plate, a stem slidably mount-ed through the bracket and pass 10 ing through the other switch member, a
head formed on the slidably mounted stem to provide an abuttin means therefor, coil springs surrounding t 1e st'm and arranged upon each side of the last mentioned switch member for holding the same under tension and normally out of and operatively in contact with the other switch member.
