Description

w. l. HAWKINS Sept. 8, 1925.
Filed Jan. 2. 1923 FIG 3 Patented Sept. 8, 1925.
UNITED STATES WASHINGTON I. HAWKINS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SHIRT SLEEVE.
Application filed January 2, 1923. Serial No. 610,213.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l VAsHINeToN I. HAWKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shirt Sleeves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention resides in the provision of simple and inexpensive means for shortening the sleeves of mens shirts so as to draw into concealed position in the coat sleeves, thecuifs of said shirt sleeves, whereby when the cuffs are soiled they may be thus hidden and also, clean cuffs may, in this manner, be protected against becoming easily soiled.
The primary object of the invention is to provide sleeve shortening means as described which may be provided by the simple expediency of forming a button hole in each sleeve and by the use of the placket buttons as now generally used, to close the sleeve plackets of the present day shirt.
The invention possesses other advantages and features some of which, with the foregoing will be set forth at length in the following description where I shall outline in full that form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawing aocompanying and forming a part of the present specification. In said drawing I have shown one form of the construction of m invention, but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such form since the invention as expressed in the claim may be embodied in a pluralit of forms.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary shirt sleeve with attached cuff showing the extra button hole necessitated by my in vention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the sleeve and cuff showing the arrangement thereof when my invention is carried out.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention.
In carrying out my invention with the ordinary mens shirt having, as shown in the drawing, a sleeve 1, attached fold back cuff 2, placket 3, placket reinforcing strip 4, placket button 5 and button-hole 6, I form a button-hole 7 in the sleeve preferably through the inner end portion of the strip 4, which portion is located beyond and in line with the closed end of the placket. I do not wish to limit myself to the arrange and generally speaking,
. providing that upon buttoning of the button 5 in'said hole, the sleeve will be shortened and the cuff drawn upwardly on the arm. However, the arrangement shown in the drawing is desirable since it is simple and inexpensive and provides for my invention at the least expense.
To shorten the sleeve to hide a soiled cuff or toprotect a fresh cufi, it is only necessary to button the button 5 in the hole 7. This may be done with the placket open or unbuttoned, as well as when the placket is closed or buttoned, although a ne-ater folding and sleeve shortening may be effected when the placket is closed. as shown in Fig. 2.
The shortening is best effected by grasping the sleeve near the button 5 and pulling up on the cuff so as to bring said button through the placket and under and then through the button-hole 7 This may be easily done and provides a smooth fold as shown at 8. In the ordinary shirt the placket button is located from approximately three to five and one-half inches from the inner end of the placket or inner end of the reinforcing strip and the buttoning of the placket button into a button-hole located near the inner end of the placket will provide for a shortening of the sleeve sufficient to draw the cuff to a well concealed or protected position in the coat sleeve, this withdrawal of the cuff being substantially equal to the distance between the placket and but tons and extra button-hole.
With my invention the placket button has a double function and this is an important point in that extra elements such as usually employed in shirts for shortening sleeves are not necessary. It is only necessary to provide in the ordinary shirt sleeve an extra button-hole, to carry out my invention. Due to the simplicity of my invention, its absence of extra buttons, tabs and other elements, the sleeve of my invention will fold without bulging, is neat, easier to operate is a substantial improvement over other sleeves having shortening means thereon.
In instances where,' with the cufi exposed, the sleeves aretoo long, by: buttoning the placket button into the extra button-holes, the sleeves will. be shortened to suit the wearer.
In Fig. 8, I have shown a modified fornroi my invention wherein the placket reinforcing strip 9 is folded to. form a tab. 10. The tab 10 has a button-hole 11 therein and this button-hole is adapted to receive the usual placket button12. One advantage in this form or" the construction is that it is unnecessary to button through the placket opening, it only being necessary to make a transverse told of the sleeve and to dispose the placket button beneath the tab, as. is obvious from an inspection of the drawings, instead of having to bring the button through the placket opening and underneath the reinforcing strip, as in the previously described form of the invention. In attaching the reinforcing strip, it'is-folded transversely at a point spaced inwardly from its outer or.
upper end and stitched, as shown, so that the tab is provided. The tabi may also befastened on one side .to the strip and-as shown,
is folded under one sideot the placket opening as at 13. This serves to hold the tab 'more or less flat against the top of the refoldof vthe strip intermediate of its ends and by the longitudinal fold so as to bring a portion of the tab on the. under side of the sleeve.
I claim:
A shirt sleeve having a placket and two button-holes extending through the sleeve, one hole being located on one side of and intermediate of the ends of theplacket and the other located adjacent the upper or inner end of the placket and a button on the side of the placket substantially oppositeto' the first named button-hole adapted tobutton from theinner side of; the sleevethrough both holes, the first hole so as to close the placket and the second hole after a trans verse fold of the sleeve so as to shorten the sleeve.
