Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. RING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Tobacco Pipe, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to smoking appliances, and more particularly to attachments for the stems of pipes and the like.

An important object of the invention is the provision of means in a pipe stem or the like to prevent passage of moisture to the mouth of the smoker.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a pipe which will prevent the passage of particles of tobacco or the like through the pipe stem.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple, yet durable of construction and will greatly impro-ve the smoking action of the pipe.

Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred em-` bodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 indicates the tobacco bowl which has a tubular shank 6 formed thereon and forming part of the pipe stem. The tubular shank 6 has a longitudinal bore 7 formed therein, the extremity adjoining the bowl 5 taperingto a comparatively small port S. My invention particularly comprises a cylindrical container 12 which is constructed of thin metal or other desirable material, one extremity being reduced and forming a cylindrical extension 13 which is adapted to engage a cylindrical screen member 14 which is comparatively small in cross section, the other extremity of the screen abutting the small bore 10. The other extremity of the cylindrical container 12 is provided with a similar extension 15 which extends through the port 8 and connects with'the inside of the bowl 5. The container 12 has a liat screen 16 positioned on the interior thereof and adapted to snugly fit the inner contour. The forward screen member 14 is covered by a felt wrapper 17 which fills the front extremity of the longitudinal bore and absorbs the moisture as it passes through the screen.

It is obvious that the bit 9 and bowl member will be held in position by the cylindrical container 12 which snugly fits the bores formed in the bit and shank.

In use, the device may be readily inserted within the shank of the pipe and obviously prevents the passage of tobacco or other particles or the moisture which may accumulate in the bottom of the bowl thereby enabling the smoker to draw clean and dry smoke through the mouth piece. It is also contemplated to so construct the device as to ,make it applicable to many styles of pipes now on the market, the insertion thereof greatly benefiting the smoker.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the subjoined claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

A tobacco pipe having a bowl portion and a stem portion, the stem portion having a bore of relatively large diameter which is connected with the interior of the bowl by a bore of relatively small diameter passing through the bottom wall of the bowl, a cy- V lindrioal container fitting snugly in the bore of the stein and having diametrically reduced end extensions, one of which fits snugly in the bore in the bottom Wall of the boWl l and e cylindrical screen pinning over the other end extension of the container and disposed longitudinally of the stem and. having its exterior surface spaced from the inner surface of the relatively large bore in the stein. 10
