SHADE BRACKET.

Be it known that we, JAMES C. CUR IS and JABIES B. Coon, citizens of the United States, residing at Beckley, in the county of Raleigh and State of l/Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade Brackets, of which the following is a specification. 7

The invention relates to shade brackets, and has for its object to provide adeviceof this character which may be, easily and quickly applied to the facing of a window frame without marring, and provided with means whereby the device may be attached to window frames having facings of different widths.

A further object is to provide a shade bracket comprising a horizontally disposed U-shaped member adapted to be clamped, to the side facing of the window frame, and an upwardly extending arm carried by said U-shapcd member and adapted to hook over the upper side of the window frame for preventing downward movement of the U- shaped member, and to brace said member.

A further object is to provide the .U- shaped brackets with arms slidably connected together and a single bolt extending through elongated slots in said arms and the upwardly extending supporting arm of the bracket.

A further object is toform the upwardly extending arm from overlapped sections, one of said sections being provided with outwardly extending arms adapted to be received between lugs at opposite sides of the other section and forming means whereby the arm may be shortened or lengthened as desired, and also means for supporting ourtain rods for curtains and over-draperies.

A further object is to provide one end of each of the U-shaped brackets with outwardly extending pivoted members adjacent the arm of the bracket and a pivoted angularly shaped lever cooperating with the pivoted member for forcing the pivoted member into close binding engagement with the side of a window frame facing.

With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention of the parts of one of the supporting arms showing the same in positionfor assem bling. Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the side members of a conventional form of window frame, the upper perspective View of ends of which are connected together by the horizontally disposed member 2. Shade supporting brackets as at present constructed require the driving of nails which mar the facing of the window frame, and as they work loose allows the bracket to spread topositions where the shade pintles will come out of the apertures therein, consequently the shade will fall. To obviate the above difficulty, and also the difficulties of placing conventional forms of shade brackets the U-shaped members 3 are provided, which members are horizontally disposed and arch the outer faces of the members 1 of the window frame. The U-shaped members 3 are formed from angularly shaped members 4, the arms 5 and 6 of which are slidably connected together as clearly shown in Figure 3, and are provided with registering elongated slots 7 through which slots the bolt 8 extends. and which bolt also extends through the lower end of the supporting arms 9. hen applying the U- shaped members to the window facing, the arms 4* thereof are placed in engagement with the outer edges of the window facing and are secured in position by means-of legs 10, imbedded in the frame, and after which the bolt 8 is loosened and the arms 5 and 6 moved inwardly until the pivoted clamping members engage the inner edges of the window frame facing, and which jaws are pivotally connected at 12 to the arms 6 of the U-shaped members and adjacent the arms 6 which are substantially right angularly disposed in relation to the arms 6. Each arm 6, adjacent its outer end is provided with an elongated slot 13, through which the arm 14 of an angularly shaped clamping j aw 15 extends, and which clamping jaw is pivotal-1y connected at 16 to the 6 and has its arm l7 disposed outside the arm 6 It will be seen that when the clamping jaw 6 is 'moved to the nosi-tionsho-wn n Figure 3, the arm 1% thereof will engage the pivoted clamping jaw 11 and force the same into close binding engagement with the inner side of the facing of the window frame}, and the lugs 18 carried thereby will be imbeddedinthewindow frame, thereby securely fastening the u-sh apedz members tothe window frame. The upwardly extending. arms 9 form an additional securing means for the brackets '3, and: which arms 9 are formed from overlapped sectionsv 1O and 20. 'Each arm section 9isprovided with oppositely disposed lugs 21, between any of which the outwardly extending-sun tain rod supportingarms 22 of the arm: section 20 maybe disposed for shortening or tionv 2 of the window frame and is secured thereto by the lugs 24: imbedded' inthe frame whilethe lower section 19 of'the arm is provided with an outwardly extending The upperseotion 20" of thearm 9' flange 25 providedwith a notch 26 for the reception of a shade pintle.

From the above it will be seen that a combined curtain rod and shade bracket is provided which is simple in construction, may be easily and quicklyapplied: to a window frame, and adjusted to fit window frames of-va-rious widths and construction, and attached thereto without marring the window frame. Itwill also be seen that additional supporting means is provided for the U-shaped members which supporting meanspositively supports and braces'the U-shaped members, andthe supporting means may be adjusted to various lengths for supporting the U-shaped members at various elevations in relation to the top of the window frame.
