GRACE BMHN F WASHINGTON, DISTRICT or commienomina e, ADJUSTABLE oL THEs DRYINGI'AND surron'r'mennvrcn.
Application filed February 8, 1924, Serial- No. 691,457.
Supporting Devices, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to laundry apparatus for domestic use and has for its objectthe provision of a novel device of a rack like nature for use in supporting or hanging clothes while they are being dried or stored,"
the device bein of such construction that it is easily portali le in addition to having the advantage of being folded when not in use to occupy little space against the wall or the like, or to'be susceptible of employment as a hanger-for coats, hats or the like or a hanger for a lamp, flower basket or the like. With the rod in place and telescoped toconvenient length it may be used in closet as support for garments on hangers.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which: includes an extensible element which may be projected so as to extend outdoors through a window.
when the device is exposed near a window, the extensible element being adapted to be engaged by the window sash whereby its strength and rigidity while in service will be greatly increased. 7
A further ob'ect is the provision of a rotatable basket element or member designed to hold dainty or. delicate garments or are ticles while they are being dried, the arrangement of this portion of the device being such that the basket will whirl or ro-. tate alternately in opposite directions whereby the air may act fully upon all portions of the articles therein for insuring rapid and thorough drying. I
Other and further objects and advantages will become apparent during the course of the following description in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a window showing an elevation of my device Figure 4 is an end elevation of the device showing a hanger supported thereon,
Figure 5 is an elevation showing the drying basket mounted thereon, in the ring provided,
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of I the basket,
Figure 7 is a detail view of the means for;
effecting whirling or. spinning of the basket,
Figure 8 is a detail View of one ring. Referring more particularly to the draw:
ings the numeral 10 designatesa suitable.
supporting base which is preferably weighted and;from which rises an upright standard 11 which is hollow within which-is slidable a stem or post 12 capable of being held in a desired adjusted position by means of a set screw 13 or the like. The stem or post. 121 carries a collar 14 within which are rotatably engaged trunnions 15 on thelower ends of a pair of S-shaped brackets 16. which have their free ends carryingst-ationary guides 17' of ring like construction.
Slidable through the guides 17 is a hori-.
zontal support 18 formed preferably of telee scopic 7 sections 19 and 20,- the former of which is equipped at its end with aper manently mounted ring 21 and the latter of which has its free end carrying a'ring- 22cm a plug 23screwe'd in place. Ring-22 serves as attachment place for drying basket to be described. The ring 2-2 and plug- 23 may be removed as a unit so as to permit the support 18 to be withdrawn fromthe guides 1'1 and disengaged entirely from the supporting rack. The purpose of having the member 18, removable is that when it is taken out the twobrackets, 16 may be swung upon their trunnions 15 and disposed in contacting relation to form, in efie'ct, a single supporting bracket which might be used as a costumer or as a support for a lamp, flower basket or v the like. This feature also permits the dc-. vice to be stored away in'a very small space within a closet or behind a door as might possibly be necessary in casethe device is used in a small apartment. I
When the member 18 is. in place," it carries apl'urality of slidable rings 24 and similar rings are alsov provided on the brackets 16, which slidable rings are for the purpose of holding hangers on which are hung the garments or other articlesto be, dried or stored. I
The rings are preferably provided with clamping'screws 25 having heads 26 and concaved ends 27' for the purpose of clamping the hangers and preventing them from accidental displacement along the rod when the garments on the hangers are exposed to the wind.
\Vhile it is possible to use ordinary hangers in the house, I utilize the p.rticular type disclosed in the drawing or one affording an equally secure attachment to the rod, outdoors or in a breeze. As illustrated the hanger 28consists of arms 29 of flexible wire carrying a crossmember .30 which may conveniently be a suitable length of bamboo or other light yet sti'li material. At the ends of this cross member are depending loops 31 carrying small spring clothes pins 32 01 the clamping type easily engageable with or upon the articles or garments to be suspended and dried. At the juncture of the arms 29 is a ring 33 carried by a snap hook 34 or split ring designed to be engaged within one of the rings 24.
For drying dainty or delicate garments such as baby clothes, silk underwear or articles made of chifion or the like, I make use of. a basket designed broadly by the numeral 35, to be attached to ring 22, which basket is here represented as being of rectangular shape and constructed as a suitable frame 36 covered with foraminous or reticulated material such as wicker, net or the like. It is preferable that the top of this basket be provided with covers 38 which maybe hinged or otherwise mounted for closing the top subsequent to placing articles or garments in the basket. At its upper corners the basket is provided with strings or other flexible members 39 which carry .01' pass through a ring 40 for connection with a twisting device which is provided for the purpose of causing rotation of the basket.
The twisting device is here represented as consisting of a plate member 41 having holes therein and provided at its ends with -oppositely inclined sails or wings 42. Passing through the holes in this plate are cords l3 knotted as shown at 4A and terminating in securing elements 45 and as, the former of which is a snap hook designed for engage' ment with the ring 22 and the latter of which is adapted for connection with the ring 40 on the cords at the top of the basket.
In the operation it will be seen that a large number of hangers may be suspended from the various rings on the rack so that many garments or articles may be dried at one time. By sliding the support 18 through the guides 17 as far as possible and extending the sections of the rod it is apparent that it'inay be made of suiiicient length as to be projected out through an open Window, the sash being preferably closed down onto the support 18 for assisting in holding it stationary. Delicate articles are easily taken care of and dried by placing them in the basket 35, suspending the basket in. ring 22 and winding the twisted cord by turning the plate member 4.1. It is apparent that the cord will tend to nntwist and this will cause rotation of the basket, the cord subsequently rewinding to a certain extent for a consider able length of time, the direction of rotation of the basket alternating. Obviously this method of drying will be very advantageous inasmuch as the air will be caused to circulate through the garments or articles -for carrying ofi the moisture in a rapid and efiicient manner. hen the basket is not in use for drying it may be used as a laundry bag.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it Will be apparent that I have thus provided a simple, inexpensive and easily set up and used'clothes drying and supporting device which will'be of great advantage on account of the small floor space it occupies and the fact that it may be extended out doors through a window. These features should recommend the device to those living in apartments or other places where space is at a premium.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make .such changes in the form,
construction and arrangement of parts as willnot depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. In a device of the character described,
a supporting rack, a basket oftoraminous .material, and a twisting device suspended from the rack and'connected with the basket for causing rotation of the latter.
2. In a device of the character described, a supporting. rack including a rod terminating in a ring, a basket of foraminous ma terial, and a twisting device suspended from the ring at end of rod in the rack "and confrom supporting members and connected with the basket for causing rotation of the latter, the twisting device being formed as a cord having two strands, a slotted plate through which the strands pass, the plate carrying Wings retarding rotation.
In testimony whereof IaffiX my signature.
GRACE G. BRANNIN.
