UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEo DANIEL S. ROBESON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMEN'l IN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,204, dated September 22, 1874; application led August 26, 1874.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL S. RoBEsoN, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
My improvements relate to that class .of paper boxes which are formed from a single creased sheet or blank adapted to be folded together and secured in desired form; and the object of my invention is to provide a self locking or fastening box in the formation of which no wire, paste, or separate strips shall be required, and which can be readily and speedily put in condition to receive the article designed to be placed in it by reason of the blank containing in itself each and every element of the finished box. To this end my invention consists in a paper box formed from a single blank, which is cut, creased, and folded as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a plan view of the blank as cut ready for use 5 Fig. 2, a view in perspective of the same, the sides, top, and bottom ofthe box being folded together and the ends thereof left open; and Fig. 3, a similar View of the box when closed.
To carry out the object of my invention, I provide a blank which is eut or stamped from a single piece of paper, substantiallyY inthe form shown in Fig. l, the dotted lines representing the creases formed therein to admit of the proper folding of the blank into box form. The section A forms the top of the iinished box, and the section B its bottom, the sections E and F, respectively, forming its sides, and the sections C and D its ends. These six sections, therefore, constitute, so to speak, the body of the box, and the remaining sections are the accessories or adjuncts, which are provided to close and hold it together. Adjacent to the section A are the sections a and al, respectively, provided with The sections e c adjoin the the sections f f adjoin the the iiaps a2 a3. section E, and
section F, A locking-section, B', likewise adjoins the section F, said locking-section being ofthe same dimensions as the top and bottom of the box, and having its ends-that is to say, the two of its edges which are at right angles to the section F--recessed, so as to provide tongues b b thereon. Slots b b are formed in the section B.
The blank, constructed as above, is folded into a box in the following manner: The tongues b b are inserted into the slots b b, and We then have an open-ended box, as shown in Fig. 2. The sections C and D are then turned down, and the sections e and j are folded in upon thesection O, and the sections e and j" similarly folded in upon the section D. The sections e eff are not indispensable in the construction of the box; but, as they assist in giving strength and stiffness to the ends, I prefer to employ them. Lastly, the sections a. and a2 are, respectively, turned up over the sectionsf and e', and the iiaps al and a3 are inserted in the slots b b over the tongues b b. rlhe box is then complete and locked together, as'shown in Fig. 3, and it is obvious that either or both of its ends may be readily opened for the insertion or removal of an article.
I am well aware that boxes made of a single strip of creased and folded paper have been heretofore known, and do not, therefore, broadly claim such device.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A box-blank cut and creased substantially as described, to wit, having the plain sections A C D E F, slotted section B, sections -a and a1, respectively provided With flaps a2 a3, and the locking-section B', provided with tongues b on its ends, as set forth.
DAN. S. ROBESON.
