To all to 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, JoHN WALoHnrM, a citizen ofth'e United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to sound-deadem ing casings for typewriting machines.

It is one feature of this invention to provide a casing completely enclosing the noiseproducing parts of the machine, but so constructed that it may be readily removed from the machine and collapsed by folding it out to a flat condition to occupy a minimum amount of space for convenience in shipping or storing.

Another feature of this invention is the construction of the casing in such manner that it may be readily set up by any oporator.

According to the present embodiment of the invention, the casing comprises a bodypart having a removable front plate to permit insertion of the machine into the casing, and a cover-part or cover. The body part and cover-part are both hollow and are hinged together, and each part comprises hinged walls, so that when said front plate is removed the parts may be substantially flattened out and swung together, to occupy a minimum amount of space. To set up the casing it is only necessary to swing the bodypart and cover-part to open position about the hinge which connects them, and then swing the various walls of each part to their effective set-up positions.

For deadening the sounds arising in the typing operation, there is provided a sound deadening casing comprising a body; part anda cover-part 31, the body-part enclosing the main frame 10, and the'cover being hollow to enclose the carriage 20. Said body-part comprises a base .32 for supporting the machine, a pad 33 of sounddeadening material being preferably inter-q posed between the feet 11 of said machine and said base, side walls 35 extending outwardly and upwardly to provide space within which .the'typewriter carriage may .operate to the right and left, a rear wall36, and a removable front wall or plate 317', said front plate, when removed, providing a largeopening at the front through which said machine may be inserted into the cast ing, the machine being located .by holes 38 in the pad 33. The removable plate .37 ,is provided with a depending portion" or tongue 49 for closing the arcuate opening 24 in the usual cover-plate 25 attache df to the front of the machine in which arcuate opening are positioned the types 15 of the type-bars. To permit access to the typebars without removing the casingor the front plate 87, as for the purpose of cleaning the types, the depending portion may be provided with an opening 50 which is closed by a removable plate 50 supported in said opening by hook-shaped pins 51 fixed thereto and by a detent-spring 52. The plate is thus readily removed or attached, a knob 58 beingpreferably provided for facilitating handling.

To permit said body-part to be collapsed, said front plate is first removed and the machine withdrawn from said body-part, and the sidewalls and rear wall are then disconnected and swung outwardly into the plane of the base. To permit said walls to be swung on said base, the side walls are hingedly connected to said base at 89, and the rear wall 86 is hingedly connected to said base at 40. To hold said walls in their effective set-up positions, the side Walls may be provided with lugs 42 which lie adjacent the rear wall, fastening menr bers, herein shown as screws 48, being passed through said rear wall and into said lugs. To enable the front plate to be mounted upon said body-part, the side walls may be provided with lugs adjacent the front of the body-part, fastening members 56 being passed through said front plate and into said lugs 45. i

The body-part, when set up, thus completely encloses the machine, with the exception'of the forward extension 12, at the bottom, sides, front, and rear, and to 6I1GlOS\ the machine at the top, there is provided the cover-part 81. Said coverepart comprises a rear wall 55, side walls 58, a top wall or ceil ing 56, which extends forwardly and slope;

downwardly, and has preferably positioned therein, a window 57 to permit the machine in the interior of the casing to be Viewed. The side walls 58 of the cover-part overlap the side edges of the body-part, the downward movement of the cover-part being limited preferably by pins 5 1 on the side walls 58 engaging the side walls 85 of the bodypart. Said ceiling 56 terminates in a short front wall 60, positioned some distance above the top of front plate 87 to provide a slot through which extend the forwardly-extending carriage-operating levers, such as the line-space handle 28, to be operable from outside of the casing, said slot being closed by co-operating sound-deadening cushions 61 and 62 mounted upon the front wall 60 and the front plate 87, respectively. To permit the cover-part to be flattened out, the rear wall and side walls'thereof are released and then swung about the top wall 56 substantially into the plane of said top wall. For this purpose, the rear wall 55 1s hinged to the rear edge of the top wall 56 at 65 and the side walls 58 are hinged to the side edges of said top wall at 66. To maintain the walls of the cover-part in their set-up positions,

the side walls 58 may be provided with lugs adjacent the rear wall 55, screws 71 being passed through said rear wall 55 and into said lugs. The side walls and ceiling 56 of the cover may be fastened at the front by screws 71 passing through the side walls or end plates 58 and threaded into lugs 7O on the ceiling.

When said body-part and said cover-part have been flattened out substantially into the plane of the base and the top wall 56, respectively, these parts may be folded one upon the other, the rear wall 55 of the coverpart being'hingedly connected tothe rear wall 86 of the cover-part at 67.

When the sound-deadening casing is set up and applied to the machine, it is desirable to provide means for assisting in raising the cover-part when access to the machine is desired. For this purpose, a spring 7 5 may be provided, said spring being connected to :1 lug 76 fixed to the body-part and to a hook 7? fixed to said cover-part, said spring, thus tending normally to swing the cover-part to open position. For limiting the upward movement of'the cover-part, a stop 78 fixed to the body-part may be interposed in the path of hook'77. When the casing is to be collapsed and the walls swung outwardly, it is necessary to detach said spring. This may be readily accomplished by merely lifting one end of the spring off hook 7 7.

The casing may, if desired, be supported upon feet 80 similar to feet 11, said feet being preferably attached to the base 82.

It will be understood that the casing may be lined in any suitable manner with sound deadening material.

It should be understood that to enable the casing to be flattened out as much as possible the hinge 65 connecting the rear wall'55 and the ceiling 56 of the cover as seen in Figures 8 and 5 is located about midway of the curved part of the cover. It should also be understood that the distance from the hinge, 6'? to the hinge 65 is shorter than the distance from the hinge 6. to the hinge 4:0. This condition avoids interfer ence between the hinge 65 and the hinge 67 when the casing is collapsed and aids in compact-ing the casing, the hinge 65 falling to one side of the hinge 40, as indicated in mates ing two main parts, namely, a body-part and a cover-part to-enclose the machine while the latter is in use, the body-part being hollow to fit around the main frame, the coverpart being hinged on the body-part and being hollow to confine the carriage and swinga-ble at will to open the casing from front to back to give access to the machine, each main part being composed of sections, so that it may be folded out to flat condition to be packed for shipment and erectable for use with the machine.

2(The combination of a typewriting machine including a carriage, a sound-deadening cabinet including two main parts, name ly, a body-part and a cover-part to enclose the machine while the latter is in use, the cover-part being hinged on the body-part and extending over the carriage, each main part being composed of sections, so that it may be folded out to flat condition to occupy a minimum of space for convenience instoring or shipping, and so that it'may be erected for use'with the machine, means to secure the cover-sections to each other, and means to secure the body-sections to each other, so that when erected the cover may be swung at will as an integral part onthe erected body-part to open the casing to give access to the carriage.

A foldable sounddeadening casing for a typewriting machine composed of. two main parts, namely, body-part and a hollowcover-part, the bodypart having a base to support the machine, a rear wall hinged to the base and side walls hinged to the base and flared outwardly at the top to accommodate the travel of the typewriter carriage, the cover-part having a back wall hinged at its lower edge to the rear wall of the body-part and curved forwardly at its upperedge, a downwardly and forwardly inclined ceiling or forward section curved to merge with the curved portion of the upper edge of the back wall when in normal relation, therewith; said ceiling being hinged at its upper rear edge to the rear wall, the hinge beingdisposed about midway of the curve of the cover-part formed by the rear wall and the forward section, so as to decrease the space occupied thereby to a minimum when folded out, and side walls shaped to fit the edges of the back wall and said forward section or ceiling hinged to the forward section at its edges.

A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a frame, types arranged in an arc at the front of the machine, a keyboard extension and a front plate having an arcuate opening to give access to the types for cleaning, said casing comprising a cover and a body-part having a front wall to fit around said key board extension and co-operate with the frame and the front plate. of the machine to partially close the front. ofthevcasing without closing the arcuate opening, and aplate to close the arcuate opening in said frontplate, said plate being also provided to open the arcua-te opening topermitaccess to the types for cleaning without otherwise disturbing the casing. v

9. A foldable sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a carriage with a forwardly-projecting handle, comprising a body-part having a base, side walls, a rear wall and connecting hinge therefor, the hinges connecting the base and rear wall projecting inwardly, a cover comprising a rear wall of different height from the rear wall of the body-part, a ceiling, side walls and connecting hinge therefor, the hinges connecting the ceiling and rear Wall of the cover projecting inwardly, an inwardly-projecting hinge connecting the rear wall of the body-part and the rear wall of the cover, the arrangement of parts being such that, when the rear Wall of the body-part is swung downwardly to the rear and the rear wall of the cover is folded thereon, the hinge connecting the rear wall and ceiling of the cover will fall to one side of the hinge connecting the rear wall and base of the body-part, a closure plate for the front of the casing and forming with the forward edge of said ceiling a slot through which said handle projects, and cushions on the adj acent edges of said ceiling and closure plate, the cushion on the forward edge of the ceiling resting on said base when the casing is folded.

10. A foldable sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a machine-receiving body-part having a base to support the machine, a rear wall hlnged to the base and side walls hinged to the base and flared outwardly'at'the top to accommodate the travel of the typewriter carriage, cover havin a back wall hinged at its lower edge to are rear wall of the body-part shaped to it the edgesof the back wall and ceiling and hinged to the ceiling at its edges, an arm extending downwardly from one of the side walls of the cover near the rear, a lug on the corresponding side of the bodypart at the front, and a cover-assisting spring to connect said arm and lug to urge the cover upwardly, the spring being read: ily detachable to avoid interference when it is desired to fold the casing.

11. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a body and a cover part forming together a box-like casing for enclosing the machine, the parts,

and the elements thereof, connected to fold flat, one part upon the other; the body having an opening in the front wall thereof through which the keyboard of the machine may extend, and means within the casing to position the machine with respect to the V casing.

12. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a body and a cover part forming together a box-like casing for enclosing the machine, the parts, and the elements thereof, connected to fold flat, one part upon the other; the body having an opening in the front wall thereof through which the keyboard of the machine may extend, and means within the casing to position the machine with respect to the casing, said means including a lining of sounddeadening material on the base of the body and provided with openings for the feet of the machine.

13. The combination with a typewriting machine having a main frame and carriage, of a sound-deadeningcabinet including two main parts, namely, a body-part and a cover-part to enclose the machine while the latter is in use, the cover-part having a window through which the typing being done may be observed, said cover-part being hinged to the bodypart and being hollow to confine the carriage and swingable upwardly and rearwardly at will to open the cabinet at the top from front to back to give access to the machine, the cover-part being composed of sections including two endwalls, the body-part being-hollow to fit around the main frame and being composed of sections including two end walls, the end walls of the body-part being inclined upwardly and outwardly towards the end Walls of the cover-part, the body-part being foldable out to a flat condition, and the cover-part being foldable out to flat condition to spread over the flattened-out bodypart.

14. The combination of a typewriting machine including a carriage, a sound-deadening cabinet including tWo main parts, namely, a body-part and a cover-part to enclose the machine, the cover-part being hinged on the body-part and extending over the carriage, the body-part being composed of sections including a base, a rear Wall hinged on said base, side Walls hinged on said base so that th body-part may be folded out to flat condition, and a front Wall, said front Wall having an opening therein through whichthe keyboard section of the machine may extend, said front Wall being detachable from the body-part to enable the machine to be placed Within the body-part after the body-part has been set up, the front Wall being passed over the keyboard extension to be attached to the front of the body-part, and devices to secure said Walls.
