'.PERCY lRIXIEVEIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CARTON AND METHOD 0F MAKING SAME.
, Application led June 12, 1922. Serial No. 567,625.
To all who/m, z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, PERCY REEVES, a citizen 0f the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Carton and Method of Making Same, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cartons or boxes for shipping and display purposes.
The object of my invention is to provide a carton made up of asingle blank cut from a sheet of cardboard, which blank can be readily formed into a carton of a desired shape; which blank lshall be so formed that while the display printing is confined to one face only of the blank the carton can be opened to display the contents for sale and lthe integral cover can be readily arranged extending above the opened box and will present a suitable display advertisement to one looking at the contents yof the box.
A further object of my invention is to y provide a carton which while made of relatively thin cardboard shall be so reinforced and stifened at its ends that it will satis; factorily serve as a container for relatively heavy goods such as boxes containing cakes of paraiiin.
A further object of my invention is to provide a carton made up from a single sheet of cardboard which shall be printed on one side only and which shall present no unprinted surface to one examining the contents when the carton is opened for display and the cover is arranged projecting above the contents. i
Another object of my invention is to provide a carton having an integral cover so constructed or made that it can readily be arranged to place the main portion of its printed top to view from the frontk of the carton when the carton is opened to display its contents.
In carrying out my invention I cut and score a blank after printing it on one side only so that it can readily be formed up into a carton of the shape and dimensions desired. The cover being cut or scored for a part of its length between its forward and rear edges so that it can be readily folded lengthwise and arranged to present its main portion of its top surface to the front abovel the contents of the box. When I cut the top, I preferably leave at least one small-con necting part at the middle of the length of the cut to prevent the separation of the parts 'until the carton is opened for display.
Many other advantages and novel features of my invention will be made clear in the following specification when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a' perspectiveview of a container made in accordance with my invention and shown in closed condition as it would appear before it has been opened forY display;
Figure 2- is. a perspective view of the container opened for display;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the container shown in partly formed condition;
Figure 4 is alfragmentary horizontal section on ,the line 4 4 of Figure 3 Figure 5 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section on the line 5 5 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a vertical transverse section on the line 5 5 of Figure 2; and
Figure 7 is a plan view of the blank as cut and scored preparatory for making the carton.
In said drawings, l illustrates my improved carton which ismade of a blank 2 cut from a single sheet of cardboard. lThe carton illustrated is a rectangular box suitable for containing a number of packages 3 for containing such material as parowax and the like which is relatively heavy. The box comprises a front wall 4, end walls 5, a' rear wall 6, a cover 7 hinged to the top edge of the rear wall, and a bottom 8. In Figure 7, I have illustrated the outer face of the blank and a particular feature of my invention is that, I am enabled to produce the results which'I desire in the way of exhibiting advertisements on the outer surface of the carton when closed and also when the carton is open for display with the printing limited of the blank. I have illustrated the advertising which appears von the blank by the word Name appearing on the several parts shown in the proper relation on the blank so that when the carton is formed the advertising will be in eral parts, to be read. I have also illustrated this idea in Figures 1 and 2 by placing the word Name on'the several flaps and surfaces.
Another important feature is the producto one face or side tion of a carton for such uses out of relatively thin light cardboard andl strengthening the carton at its ends in a novel and simple manner. Regardless of the construction in strengthening the body of the box, I make the cover 7 in such a manner that the Ycover is an integral unit suitable for closing the carton for packing and shipping pur-.
poses and so arranged vthat when the carton illustrated in Figure 2.
For this purpose I score the cover on a line 9 inwardly from each end substantially midway between its front and rear edges so that the cover can be folded on a substantially center longitudinal line. I then cut the cover on the line 10 between the inner ends of the score lines 9, the line 10 being preferably deliected toward the rear edge of the lcover andsymmetrical at both ends for or` namental purposes and I leave a portion 11 of vthe cover substantially at the center of the cover, uncut, so as to retain the severed portion V12 in the plane of the cover until this uncut part 11 has been broken. This is for the purpose of holding the cover, as a whole, flat during the time that the carton is closed, that is during shipping and then when it is desired to open the carton for display this portion 11 is broken and the cover is folded in an obvious manner to expose the main portion of the cover including the severed portion 12 to view from the front of the carton..
At the liront edge 4of the cover, I provide a longitudinal lap 13 which is adapted to be tucked in between the front 4 and the contents of the carton when thel carton is closed as best shown in Figure 1 and is also adapted to be tucked in between thecontents of the box and theback of the Abox when theY carton is opened for display as best shown 1n Figure 2.
Preferably I make the end walls'v inclined on their upper edges 14 and extend- 1ng from the upper edge of the rear wall to the upper edge of the front wall, the front wall beingnarrower than the rear wall to expose the contents of the carton as best shown in Figure 2. And for the purpose. of completing the carton between lthe inclined upper edges 14 and the cover, I provide tapered flaps 15 on the ends of the cover providing score lines 16 where these ilaps join on the ends of the cover so that these flaps can be readilybent downwardly4 to lill in between the cover and the top edges of the endsof the carton. For holding these end ilaps 15 in ,their closed positioIrI provide tongues 17 at their forward ends adapted.
-iaps 25 and at the ends oli when the carton is closed to be bent in withinthe edge Hap 13 on the forward edges ot the cover and be bound between this flap and the contents of the box thus completing the ends of the box as best shown in Figure 1.'-
These tongues 17 also serve another purpose.- VVhen the flap v13 is tucked in at the back of the contents of the box these tongues k17 project down along side the ends of the box and assist in retaining the cover in its upstanding position besides serving as ornamental parts depending from the lower ends of the flaps 15.
I preferably so make the cover that-when the cover is folded and the'flap 13 is tucked in, the forward portion of the cover which is exposed to view from the front, will stand in rearwardly inclined position as best shown in Figures 2 and 6. To make the insertion of the tab 13 easy when the cover is open, Iv tree the back 6 from the ends' by short vertical cuts 18 andbesides the score line 19at the upper edge'o'f the back, I provide an auxiliary longitudinal score line 20 connecting the lower ends of the cuts 18 so that the upper strip 21 of the back defined by the two score lines 19 and 20 can swing outwardly thus permitting the easy insertion of the tab 13. The relative position of the score lines 9 and the lengths of the two parts of the 'top are such that when the tab 13 is entered between the contents and the back of the top it normally is set in rearwardly inclined position. The peculiar manner of making the cut 10 and the part 12 causes the portion of the cover which is exposed to view when the carton is open for displayto be at its widest part nearly as wide as the whole cover thus presenting a large exposed space for advertising purposes.
The bottom 8 is rectangular as shown in Figure 7 land'extending outwardly from its ends I provide parts 22 equal in width to the width of the bottom and as high as ltheends of the carton and I provide score lines 23 at the junction of these parts with the ends of the bottom 8. The upper edges 24 of the partsv 22 are inclined to produce the inclined top 'edges 14 on the ends. At the ends of the Jfront wall 4 I provide end the rear wall 6 I provide cooperating end flaps 26, these flaps .bein
be interloied when the walls 4 and 6 are formed up into position, the flaps 25 being provided with cuts 27 and the fla s 26 pro' vided with tongues 28 and the. aps being )adapted to be interlockedy as bestn shown in Figure 3. These two iiaps when interlocked provide ends which are substantially double thickness and I provide means adapted to fold together *andfor reinforcing these double thicknessl ends` and preventing these flaps from becoming freed from each other. This means comprises .the center flap or section 22 with an additional Hap or section 29 connected to the outer edge 24 thereof. The section 22 is adapted to be folded up against the outer faces of the interlocking flaps 25 and 26 and the ksection 29 is adapted to be formed over the end of the box and down Within thebox against the inner surface of the interlocked flaps 25 and 26 as best shown in-Figure 3. or the purpose of reinforcing the end corners ofl the carton, I provide end flaps 30 and 31 on the member 29, these end flaps being adapted to contact with the front and rear walls of the 4 box, the flap 31 against the rear wall 6 and the Hap 30 against the front Wall 4 as shown in Figure 3. For the purpose of retaining the Hap 2 in its final position. I provide `its outer edge with short tongues 32 and VI provide cooperating cuts 33 inthe bottom 8 adjae cent to its ends for receiving these short tongues 32 as the section 29 reaches its final position, the parts 'yielding suiliciently to permit the tongues 32 to enter the slots 33.
It Will now be evident that the ends of my carton are very greatly strengthened and that I am enabled to produce a durable carton from relatively thin ory light cardboard.
` of the contents of the carton have been re.
As best shown 1n Figure 5, I preferably tuck the edge flap 13 of the cover behind the flaps 31 thus retaining the cover in its upright position even after the upper row moved and this flap 13 can be tucked between the flaps' 30 and the front wall when the cover is yclosed upon the contents. It will be obvious that the blanks can be stored inflat condition until the cartons are needed and that I have produced a form of carton in which the printing can be limited to one face' and yet be capable of having the cover raised and present its top display surface to the front. l
It is to be noted that the printed surfaces of t-he parts 29, 30, and 31 appear Within the ends of the carton and cover'a'll unsightly joints and connections, thus showing a very neat and'smooth interior.
As many modications of my invention in detail construction and arrangement Will doubtless suggest themselves to one skilled in the art, I do not limit or confine my invention to thesedetails as shown and described.
I claim:
A cardboard carton made of a single sheet of cardboard printed on one side only7 adapted to display an advertisement when its top is closed, the cover 'provided with a slot running substantially from end tov end, there being-avl space adjacent to the middle of its length `which is not severed for holding the edges together until the carton is opened, the' slots permitting the ready folding of the carton transversely to permit its top surface to be seen from the front when arranged in upstanding position back of the carton, the top edges of the ends of the carton being inclined and the front edge of the carton lower than the rear edge, the cover provided on each end with a ta ered' flap and on its free edge with a para lel closing flap for extending the body portion of the carton, folding tongues at the ends of the tapered flaps for usevin holdging the cover in raised position, the free edge flap serving to tuck in at the back of the carton for holding the extended cover in rearwardly inclined position. 'i
