Description
Patented Aug. 18, 1925.
UNITED STATES JOI-IN W. EMERSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
noon snconnn. y t y Application led February 9, 1924. Serial No. 691,582.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN IV. EirnnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Securers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to door' securers which are particularly adapted for ruse in locking doors where locks and keys are not provided. The object is to provide a door securer which may be carried in the pocket and be easily applied by a persen traveling about from place to place; a door securer which will positively stay in lockedposition and secure the door to the jamb, and which is simple and durable in construction.
This object, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is afront elevation of a door r and door jamb having my Vimproved door securer applied thereto,
Figure 2 a horizontal section through the door and `iamb showing the doorsecurer as it .is applied for securing the door to the jamb. Y
Referring to the drawings, l indicates a door jainb, 2 the door, 3 my improved door securer which is composed of a jamb member i provided with spikes 5 and a shoulder 6 which are adapted to engage the door jamb. The spikes 5 dig into the side of the door jamb while the shoulder 6 abuts the front of the door jamb. A locking member 7 has one end hinged to the jamb member at 8 and is provided with a notch 9 adjacent the hinge 8. The other end 10 of the locking member abuts the door and holds it in a closed position.
A U-shaped catch 11 is pivoted to the jamb member at 12 and is adapted to swing` into engagement with notch 9. The catch is preferably made from a U-shaped spring wire and its pivotal connection is made by drilling holes 13 at opposite sides of the j amb member and inserting bent ends 14 of the spring wire therein.
To apply my improved door se-curer in position to secure a door to the jamb, the device is placed between the door and j amb as shown in Figure 2. The door is then closed in the usual manner. This movement will force the spikes of the jamb member into the door jamb and the shoulder into abutment with the front of the jamb. The locking member is then swung into its locking position and the catch swung on its pivot and snapped into notch 9. The door is then rigidly secured to the jamb.
A door securer constructed as above described may be conveniently carried in the pocket; may be easily'applied to any door jamb and will not be unlocked by jars or vibrations of the door.
liVhile I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts may changed without departing from the spiritthereof, and hence I do not limit `myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A door secure-r including a amb member provided with spikes for engagement with a door jamb; a locking member hinged to the jamb member and having a notch therein paralleling the hinge, and a catch in the form of a U-shaped member pivoted on the jamb member and adapted to swing into engagement witlrthe notch and hold the locking member in locking position.
2. A door securer including a jamb member provided with' spikes and a. shoulder for engagement with a door jamb; a locking member hinged on the jamb member and having a notch therein adjacent the hinge, and a. catch pivoted on the jamb member adjacent the ,shoulder and adapt-ed to swing into engagement with the notch and hold the c locking member in locking position.
3. A door securer including a jamb member provided with spikes and a shoulder for engagement with a door jamb; a locking member hinged. on the jamb member beyond the shoulder, and a spring wire hav ing its ends pivoted in the jamb member between said shoulder and the hinged connection with the locking member and adapted to swing into engagement with the locking member and hold it in locking position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
