RAE E, COCHRAN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE D. L. AULD COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
METHOD OF CASTING ARTICLES.
Application led December 27, 1923. Serial No. 682,910.
To all Qtr/m t may concern:
Be it known that I, Ran E. COCHRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin. and
5 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Casting Articles, of which the following is a specilication.
rIhe present invention is directed to an improved method of forming articles having an outer coating or shell of a precious or semi-precious metal and a filling or core of inferior metal A further object of the invention is 'to provide a new article of manufacture, such for instance as an automobile door handle, so constructed that the outer surface thereof can be ornamented by a die or engraved, the outer surface being formed from a pre* cious or semi-precious metal which will not tarnish, the outer surface or shell being fused with the core or filler so as to provide a solid unitary article of manufacture.
lilith these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts, and hereinafter to be fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through the article,
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure l,
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view through the device after the flashings have been removed, and
Figure 4t is a transverse sectional view through a modified form of the invention.
In carrying ont my invention I take a pair of complementary7 die struck shells l of precious or semi-precious metal, the shells being provided with flashings 2, said shells being placed in a suitable sand mold 3 with their flashings in contacting relation, there being openings 4 in the shells through which a brass metal forming the filler or core 5 is poured. In order to cause the core to fuse with the inner surface of the shells a suitable flux is placed within the shells so that when the molten core from the metal is poured into the shells it will fuse therewith so that the shell and core will be united in a unitary structure. In this instance the article formed is a handle for automobile' doors, but it will be of course understood that other articles can be made wherein it is desired to produce an outer surfacewhich is ornamented by the die or afterwards engraved or ornamented in any other suitable manner.
JAfter the article has been formed as above described the liashings are trimmed from the shells and the article polished and provided with the handle shank 6.
It will be of course obvious that since the core or filler fuses with all parts of the interior of the shell that the likelihood of the shell becoming separated from the core is positively eliminated and that after the flashings are removed the joint between the shells can be polished so as to eliminate any unevenness which might occur at the joint, thereby producing an article having the appearance of a solid precious or semi-precious article. 'i
In the modified form of the invention a single shell 7 is employed, said shell being placed in the mold and provided with a Inarginal flange 8 which will give to the handle a finished appearance. The core or liller of inferior metal 9 is poured into the shell after a suitable flux has been placed therein whereupon the molten metal will fuse with all parts of the shell to provide a solid and unitary structure.
The handle shank 10, in both forms of the invention can be attached to the finished article in any suitable manner.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a novel means of forming` articles having an outer coating or shell of precious or semi-precious metal in which a filler or core of the inferior metal is placed, the construction being such that the outer shell can be ornamented by dies or afterwards engraved as deemed desirable.
What is claimed is:
l. The herein described process of forming articles which consists in taking a pair of complementary die struck shells of semiprecious metal, placing the shells with their open sides together, and fusing with the interior surface of both shells and core or filler of inferior metal.
2. The herein described process of forming articles which consists in taking a pair of complementary die struck shells having marginal tlashings, )lacing the flashings in Contact with each other, fusing a core or filler of inferior metal with the interior Walls of the shells, and trimming,l the iasliings from the shells.
3. The method of producing articles of the character set forth, which consists in providing a thin metallic shell of precious or semi-precious materials, in fusing a core or filler of inferior metal solidly Within said shell to fill the entire capacity thereof, and in molding,` a handle shank Within said ller metal to firmly bind the same in inseparable union with said article.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
RAE E. COCHRAN.
