TANK-CAR VALVE.

To ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that l, G'Us'ravn C. BEVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at indiana Harbor, in the county ot Lake and State ot indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in 'l`aI1l{Car Valves, ot which the following is a speciication.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in valves tor tank cars, the present invention being an improvement over that described in the application liled by me on July 3l, i020u Serial No. 400,541.
'lhe genera-l object ot the present invention is to locate the valve within the tank or container, at the bottom thereof, and to provide means whereby it may be easily secured in place.
Another object ol the invention is to provide means whereby the valve plug may be given an initial vertical movement before being rotated to open or close the outlet port or ports, this vertical movement facilitating the rotation of the plug.
rlhis invention also consists in certain other features ot construction and in the combination and arrangement ot' the several parts, to be hereinafter 'fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
ln describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention.

Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 ot Figure 3.
Referring to Figures l and t, l indicates a portion ot the bottom part oi the tank or container and 2 indicates the opening formed therein. 3 indicates the extension or outlet spout for the contents o't the tank, this extension being provided with a flange 4t which is riveted to the bottom of' the tank around the opening 3, as shown at 5. The upper face of said flange is provided with a recess 6 which receives a plate 7 which is also riveted to the bottom l as shown at 8. This Serial No. 405,067.
plate is provided with an opening 9 which registers with the bore ot the spout and said plate is also provided with an annular groove which is concentric to the opening.
rlhe improved valve comprises a casing ll which is provided with a circular base 12 having an annular projection 18 on its bottom tor engaging the groove 10, a packing ring le being located in the groove. Ribs connect the side walls of the casing with the base and said casing is formed with the tapered bore 1G and the oppositely arranged ports l?. The valve plug 18 is of tapered formation to conform to the shape of the bore ot the casing and the lower part ot this plug is provided with a pair otl outlet passages 19. rlhe upper part ot the plug is reduced to receive the cup member 2O and the upper end of the reduced portion is screw threaded to receive the nut 2l, rll`he bottom of the nut is adapted to enter the cup-shaped member and a coil spring 22 is placed in said member with its upper end engaging the nut. rlhe cup-shaped member is provided with a flange tor extending over thetop of the casing and ball bearings 23 are placed between said member and the top of the casing. A coil spring 2li is located below the bottom ot the plug and said spring rests upon the lugs 25 which are formed on the interior walls oi' the extension or spout at the upper end oi its bore. rlhis spring and spring i8 serve to hold the plug in firm engagement with the walls of the casing and the tension oi these springs can be adjusted by means of the nut 2l.
rEhe upper end ot the reduced part of the plug is provided with a square socket 26 which is adapted to receive the square end et the valve operating rod 27, the parts being held together by a pin 28 which also passes through the nut 2l and acts to hold said nut in adjusted position.
At the junction of the extension 3 with its iiange inner and outer grooves 29 are formed Jfor weakening this part of the extension so that it the extension should come in contact with an obstruction along the track or be struck in any other way the extension would break ott at this weakened point and thus remove the danger ci the other parts being pulled away from the bottom ot the tank and spilling the contents.
It will be seen that the plug can be rotated to bring the passages therein into register with the ports 17 in the valve casing so as to permit the contents of the tanl to flow into the extension or spout. rl`hen by giving` the plug a quarter turn these passages will be moved out of register with the ports so as to cut off the flow. By depressing` the rod 27 before rotating it the plug Will be lovfered slightly so as to free it. from the walls of the bore7 thus perrni ting` it to be rotated easily. The springs Will return it to its seatas soon as the pressure is removed from the rod. The ball bearings permit the cup-shaped member to move freely upon the casing with the plue.
The connection of the extension and plate 7 with the tank and the valve casing is a tight one to prevent the escape of oil and this arrangement also permits the valve to be readilyY positioned Within the tank.
In the modification shown in Tnigure 2 the plate 7 is omitted as is also the recess in the flange of the extension and the base l2 of the valve is bolted directly to said Hz'nige. This flange is also provided With the groove for receiving` thev packing ring and the prejection on the va` f'e base. ln other respects this form of the invention is similar to that before described.
The form of the invention shown in Figure 3 is similar to that shown in Figure 2 but this ligure shows the extension 3 as being provided ivith the steam ports 8X for deliveringfthe steam introduced at the inlets 3 against the flange of the extension whereby the parts cai-living` the valve are heated to malte the contents of the tank run freely therefrom in cold Weather.
