J. SILAS LEAS, OF ROOK lISLAND, ILLINOIS.V
IMPROVEMENT IN RECLINING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,873, dated September 8, 1874; application led June 30, 1874. v
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, J. SILAS LEAs, of Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reclinin g-Ohairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a recliningchair, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to lmake and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a plan of the chair when used as a lounge; Fig. 2, a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional elevation, showing the chair in position when used forreclining; Fig. 4, a detail view, showing back of the chair.
Each side of the frame of my rocking-chair consists of a rocker, A, two curved standards, B B, and a top bar, O. These may be all made in one piece,'or separate, and united together in any lirm and substantial manner. The front end of lthe top bar C is curved over downward, 4as shown, and connected with the front end of the rocker A by means of a toothed or rack bar, D. The two side pieces thus constructed are connected together by means of two top cross-bars, E E, and a bottom round, G. The frame for the back of the chair is formed of two side pieces,H H, curved substantially in the manner shown, and connected by suitable crossbars, and pivoted between the rear ends of the bars O O by a rod, a, passing through them. The front ends of the bars H H pass under the cross-bars E E, and through their front ends passes a shaft or rod, b. Upon each vend of the rod bis secured a pawl, d, to engage with the rack-bars D D, and thus hold the back at any angle or inclination, as desired.. On the rod b is further secured, at or near the center, a treadle or footpiece, f, by means of which the occupant of the chair can readily throw the pawls d d in or out of gear with the rack-bars D D, and thus adjust the back to suit while seated in the chair. The cross-bar I, connecting the upper ends ofthe bars H H, is made concave on its under side, and in the same is hinged a board, J, which can close in between the bars against stops c' t', and be held by a button, h. In the edges of the board J are hinged legs m m, connected by a cross-bar, n, which legs and bar, when folded, t in grooves in the board J.
When it is desired to use this chair as a lounge, the back is lowered as far as possible, the board J swung around to form a continuation of the back, and the legs m m thrown down to support said board, upon which the pillow may then be arranged.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The rack-bars D D, secured to the front end of rockers A A and top bars C C, in combination with adjustable back H and pawls d d, arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the chair-frame A B C with rack-bars D D, the hinged back H, extending between and in front of the chairframe, the rod b, pawls d d, and treadle or foot-piece f, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. I
3. rIhe combination, with the adjustable back H of the hinged board J, hinged legs m m, stops i t', button h, and cross-barn, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. SILAS LEAS.
