Description

w. 0. BROWN. l'nstru ments'for Ringing Hogs.
'1 Patented Sept.8,1874.
' UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM 1). BROWN, or LEROY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN INSTRUMENTS FOR RINGING HOGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,832, dated September 8, 1874; application filed July 8, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. D. BROWN, of Leroy, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Instrument for Ringing Hogs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which is shown a perspectiveview of my invention.
The object of this invention is to provide an instrument for the insertion and closing of two rings simultaneouslyin a hogs snout; and it consists in the novel construction of a ringing tool or pinchers having bifurcated jaws .with diverging branches and concave grooves,
all arranged in such relation as to admit two ring-blanks at once and insure their simultaneous insertion in the animals snout, one on each side of the bone.
The advantage of such a tool is principally the saving of time and trouble which it effects, as Well as the annoyance and difficulty of inserting a second ring after the first, resulting from the terror and irritability of the wounded animal.
Referring to' the accompanying drawings, A designates a ringing tool or pinchers, composed of two intersecting levers pivoted together at B, and so curved at their forward ends as to form jaws O O for the reception of the ring-blanks, the latter being made of wire or its equivalent, and fitting the grooves a inside the jaws. These jaws are, as before stated, bifurcated to produce diverging branches d d, of which each pair, composed of an upper and lower branch, coincide, as shown.
In using the instrument a blank, preferably of elliptic form, having arms of unequal length to insure closing outside the flesh, is inserted between eachv pair of jaws, and, after being brought to bear on the hogs nose, are both inserted and closed by a single motion of the levers, all injury to the bone or part between 2. A tool or pinchers for ringing hogs, havin g two diverging grooves,as and for the purpose specifled.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of June, 1874.
WILLIAM D. BROWN.
