UNITED STATES PATENT OEFECE.
ELMEB B, REED, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
HATGHET.
Application filed January 19, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lfllO vn that I, ELMER l3. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State 6 of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hatchet, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools and more particularly to hatchets.
The object of the invention is to provide a nail extracting hatchet equipped with opposing aws on either side of the eye thereof and having nail engaging apertures formed in said jaws, so arranged that the strain is brought to bear on the flat side of the hatchet and also of the handle.
Yfith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the lHVel'llllGll herein disclosed may be made within the sco e of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
in the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a hatchet constructed in accordance with this invention, a portion of the handle being broken off for convenience in illustration;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the hatchet;
Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section partly in elevation showing the eye of the hatchet with the handle inserted therein;
and
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line H of Fig. 3.
Serial No. 3,426.
In the embodiment illustrated a hatchet head 1 is shown equipped with the usual eye 2 for receiving the handle 3. The 0pposed side walls of the eye 2 at the outer ends thereof are provided with notches 4:
and 5 to form nail receiving jaws.
These shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3.
Aside from these jaws formed by the notches 4t and 5 the hatchet head is the same as those of ordinary construction. I claim A nail extracting hatchet having a handle receiving eye with recesses in its opposed side edges at the outer ends thereof, said recesses conforming substantially in shape to that of the head and adjacent portion of a nail and opening inwardly to receive the nail for extracting it, the strain being born by the broad side of the hatchet head and by the handle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto atlixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
