Be it known that we, LOUIS BAsKIN, a citizen of the United States, and Gnonsn Women, who has signified his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and both residents of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois have invented a new and useful Improvement inRadiator Caps, of which'the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to improvements in radiator caps, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of our invention is to provide aradiator cap that cannot be removed when once locked in position on the filler spout of a radiator.
A further object of our invention is to provide a device of the type described which is adapted to fit any type of radiator filler spout.
A further objectof our invention is to provide a device of the character described which makes an audible signal when the pressure in the radiator-passes a predetermined poi'nt, and which also has manual operable means for stopping the signal at the will of the operator.
A further object of our invention is to provide a device of the type described which has an automatic valve for permittingthe escape of any excess steam or water from the radiator when the pressure therein has passed a predetermined point.
A further'ob'ject of our invention is to provide a device of the type described which has its inlet opening facing the front of the automobile, whereby the water can be readily poured therein when desired.
A further object of our invention is to provide a device of the t ype described which is relatively simple in construction, has few moving parts, and is not likely to easily get out of order. 1
Other objects and advantages wll appear in the following specificsti'on, and the novel features of the invention. will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In carrying out our invention, we provide a body portion 1 of the shape shown in the drawings and which is provided with an inlet opening 2 that is threaded. internally at 3 adjacent the outer end thereof. The inlet opening 2 is also provided with a funnel shaped end 4-, and a screw plug 5 is adapted to be inserted into the threaded portion thereof. The inlet 2 communicates with a central compartment 6, he latter being threaded at 7 and adapted to receive a re-- duced portion 8 of an adapter ring 9. The ring 9 is normally screwed onto a filler spout 10 of an automobile (not shown). A vertical bore 11 communicates with the compartment G and is flared outwardly at 12 adjacent its lower end. The outer end of the bore 11 is beveled and provides a seat 13 for a valve 14. The valve 14 has a stem 15 slidably mounted in a cross bar 16 and carries a spring 1'? which normally bears on the bar 16 and keeps the valve 14 seated. A cap 18 is screwed onto the body portion 1 at 19 and has disposed in its recess a plug 20. The plug 20 has a portion of its periphery flattened at 21, thus providing an opening for steam or water to pass thereby. Adjacent the plug 20 and the flattened portion 21 is an opening 22 in the cap 18 which permits the steam or water passing the plug 20 to pass out of the cap 18. The opening 22 is so arranged with respect to the flattened portion 21 of the plug 20 that an audible noise resembling a whistle will be produced thereby when steam or air rushes therethrough.
A means for locking the body portion 1 to the ring 9 is provided and comprises a pin 23 having a head 24 and a recessed portion 25. Pivotally mounted in the recessed portion 25 is a trigger 26 which is secured to the pin 23 by means of a screw 27 (see Figure 3). The trigger 26 has a pin 28 in; tegral therewith on which is secured one end of a spring 29, the other end of the spring being disposed in a recess 30 of the pin 28. The pin 23 is inserted in alined openings 31 and 32 in the body portion 1 and the ring 9, respectively. The trigger 26 is turned into the position illustrated by the dotted lines in, Figure 3 previous to the insertion of the pin into the alined openings 31 and 32, The trigger 26 then assumes the position indicated by the full lines in Figure 3, due to the action of the spring 29 pressing thereon. A screw plug 33 is then inserted in the enlarged portion 34 of the opening 31.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. It will be noted that the adapter ring 9 is designed to be made in different sizes, so as to fit filler spouts of difierent diameter. Each of the adapters, however, has its reduced portion of the same standard size, and having a standard thread arranged to receive the threaded lower portion of the body 1. By making these adapters in various sizes, the radiator cap can be secured to a filler spout of any size, without the necessity of changing either the filler spout or the cap. It is our idea to make these adapters so as to fit the filler spouts of all makes of automobiles, thereby obviating the necessity of male ing the radiator caps in various sizes and thus lessening the cost of production of the cap. In case the filler spout 10 should be internally threaded, the adapter ring 9 is provided with an external thread. In assembling the device on the filler spout 10, we first screw thereon the ring 9 and secure it rigidly in place by a set screw 36 (see Figure 1). 7e then screw onto the ring 9 the body portion 1, care being taken that the openings 31 and 32 are in alinenient after assembly. The inlet opening 2 will then face the front of the car so that water can be readily poured therein. The pin 23 is inserted in the alined openings 31 and 32 in the manner heretofore described. It will thus be seen that when the pin 23 is inserted, the radiator cap cannot be removed from the car. To prevent anyone from tampering with the trigger 26 by means of projecting a wire or the like through the opening 2, we provide'the ring 9 with an inwardly extending flange 37 which is a'dlzspted to cover the trigger 26 (see F igure Assuming that the water in the radiator has passed a predetermined pressure, the valve 14 will automatically be opened against the tension of the spring 17, thus permitting the steam and water to pass thereby, past the flattened portion of the plug 20, and out through theopening 22 of the cap 18. As heretofore stated, this will cause an audible signal which can be readily heard by the driver and will thus instantly tell what condition the contents of the radiator is in. In case the driver is quite a distance from a place where he can obtain water, he can stop the audible signal by swinging a plate 38 (see Figure 2) up over the opening 22, the plate 38 still permitting the steam and water to escape out of the opening 22, since the cap 18 is circular in shape and the plate 38only covers the central portion of the opening. The opening 22 is disposed diametrically to the inlet opening 2 so that the former will always be positioned to the rear of the car and the air rushing by the car when it is in motion will not produce the audible signal. If desired, wings 39 or other means of ornamentation can be secured to the body portion 1 to enhance the appearance of the same.
Our invention provides an ornamental device for any radiator and is thoroughly theft proof.
e claim:
1. In combination, an annular supporting member at the upper end of the filler spout of a radiator, a cap having an annular body portion fitting on said annular supporting member, said body portion and said annular supporting member having alined radial. openings, a pin adapted to be projected into said alined openings from the outer-end thereof to position to extend into the interior of said annular supporting member, and a pivoted stop member carried by the extending end portion of the pin and urged continuously from position in which it is completely disposed in a recess in said pin to position to extend laterally of said pin and to then engage with the inner wall of the supporting member to prevent retrograde movement of the pin in said alined radial openings.
2. In combination, an annular supporting member at the upper end of the filler spout of a radiator, a cap having an annular body portion fitting on said annular supporting member, said body portion and said annular supporting member having alined nadial openings, a pin adapted to be projected into said alined openings from the outer end thereof to position to extend into the interior of said annular supporting member, a pivoted stop member carried by the extending end portion of the pin and urged continuously from position in which it is completely disposed in a recess in said pin to position to extend laterally of said pin and to then engage with the inner wall of the supporting member to prevent retrograde movement of the pin in said alined radial openings, and a guard flange within said supporting members above said extending inner end portion of the securingpin. 1
3. In combination, an annular supporting member at the upper end of the filler spout of a radiator, a cap having an annular body portion fitting on said annular supporting member, said body portion and said annular supporting member having aligned radial openings, a locking member adapted to be projected into said aligned openings in the outer end thereof to a position to extend into the interior of said annular supporting member, and means carried by the inner end of said looking member and being urged continuously from a position in which it is completely disposed in a recess in said locking 1 member into a position to extend laterally of said locking member and to then engage with the inner Wall of the supporting member to prevent retrograde movement of the looking member in said aligned openings.
