UNITE STATES ROBERT E. MCINTOSH, OF MARQUE'I'TE, NEBRASKA.
DOOR LATCH.
Application filed November 2, 1922. Serial No. 598,556.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. MoIN'rosH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marquette, in the county of Hamilton, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Door Latch; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to door latches, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, will not be rendered inoperative upon sagging of the door and will also form means for cooperating with a keeper for holding a door in open position.
A further object is to provide a door latch comprising a horizontally disposed pivoted latch extending through the aperture in the door adjacent its free end and cooperating with a keeperplate disposed to the inside of the door and held in engagement with said keeper by means of a coiled spring, one end of which is connected to the lever, and the other end anchored within the chamber of a plate carried by the outer side of the door. The outer end of the lever is provided with a hand engaging loop adapted to be grasped by the operator for operating the latch when it is desired to open the door, said loop being positioned where, when the door is in operative position, it will engage and spring over a member for holding the door in open position,
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a por tion of a door, showing the latch applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the latch.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of door, for
lnstance a barn door, which door is disposed in a door opening 2 of a wall 3. The door 1 swings in a horizontal plane on the hinges 4c in the usual manner. Extending transversely through the door adjacent its free end 5 and through an aperture 6 is a pivoted latching member 7, which member is plvoted at 8 in a channel 9 of the inside plate 10 and moves in a horizontal plane. The lnner end of the member 7 is provided with a recess 11 for the reception of the end of the keeper plate 12 when the door is closed as shown in Figure However when the door is closed the curved end 13 of the member 7 engages the keeper and forces the outer end 13 of the member 7 in the direction of the arrow or against the action of' the coiled spring 14 until the keeper 12 is received for holding the door in closed position. Coiled spring 1% is disposed within the channel 15 of the plate 16 carried by the outer side of the door and is protected from the weather by said plate, however the spring at all times exerts a pull at all times on the outer end 13 of the lever 7 and consequently insures a positive latching action. It will be seen that the keeper plate 12 is vertically disposed and is relatively wide in relation to the thickness of the member 7, consequently in case of sagging of the door the inner end of the member 7 will still engage the keeper plate and receive the keeper plate in the recess thereof. When the operator desires to unlatch the door he grasps the looped handle member 17 and moves the same in the direction of the arrow at, thereby unlatching the door and allowing the door to swing outwardly on its hinges 4.
Secured to the wall 3 to the hinged side of the door is a horizontally disposed inclined keeper 18, with the inclined surface of which the looped handle member 17 engages when the door is swung to open posi tion, said handle member camming over the keeper 18 against the action of the coiled spring 14, and when the keeper is received within the looped handle member 17 the door will be held in open position until manually released by the operator.
From the above it will be seen that a door latching device is provided which is simple in construction, positive in operation and one which will positively hold the door in closed or open position, the handle member of the latching device being used for engaging over the keeper carried by the wall adjacent the door for holding the door in open position. The plate 10 is provided with a handle member 19 adapted to be grasped by the operator when located inside the door when it is desired to close the door from the inside.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:
The combination with the free end of a hinged door, said door being mounted Within a door opening, of a latching device therefor, said device comprising plates disposed on opposite sides of the door and having channels therein in horizontal registration with each other and extending outwardly from the door, a pivoted ho "izontally disposed latching member extending through an aperture in the door and trans versely through the channels of the plates, said latching member being pivotally mounted in the channel on the inner side of the door, an inwardly extending vertically disposed keeper plate located adjacent the inner side of the door and adapted to be recei ed in a notch in the inner end of the pivoted .lever, the outer end of the pivoted lever being provided with a looped handle member outside of the outer channel, a coiled spring longitudinally disposed within the channel of the outer plate in a plane parallel to the door and adjacent the door, aid coiled spring having one of its ends connected to the outer end of'the lever and its other end anchored to the channel and a keeper member disposed to one side of the door and in the path of the looped handle member of the lever and adapted to receive and hold said handle member against the action of the coiled spring when the door is open.
Intestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT E. MoINTOS-H.
