Description

July 21, 1925. 1,546,484 L. A. FOWLER AIR STRAINER Filed Jan. 24, 1923 INVENTOR Patented July 21, 1925.
umTEoIsTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
LESTER A. FOWLER, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, AS-SIGNO'R TO THE WESTING- HOUSE AIR BRAKE COMPANY, OF WILMEB'DING, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
AIR srrmmna.
Application filed January 24, 1923. Serial No. 614,705.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESTER A. FO LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Air Strainers, of which'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to air strainers as employed for straining compressed air for use in fluid pressure systems such, for example, as a fluid pressure brake system.
The principal object of my invention is to provide improved means for straining fluid under pressure before it passes to the system for use. y
In the accompanying drawing, the single figure is a section of a portion of a compressed air storage reservoir having associated therewith an air strainer in accordance with my invention.
As shown in the drawing, the compressed air reservoir 1 is provided with an opening at one end adapted to be closed by means of a cap plate or head 2, a gasket 3 being interposed between the reservoir and the head. 4
The air strainer may comprise a cylindrcal perforated metal cage 4 which is packed with curled hair 5 and is provided with a flange 6 adapted to fit a corresponding annular groove provided at the end of the reservoir 1. When the cap plate 2 is secured in position, the strainer is held firmly in place bythe clamping of the flange 6. An outlet passage 7 for compressed air flowing from the reservoir is provided in the cap plate 2 and said passage registers with a passage 8 in the reservoir end portion 9, the passage 8 being connected to an'outlet pipe 10. o
By locating the air strainer within. the
reservoir, space is economized and it is not necessary to provide a protecting casing for the strainer, since the reservoir itself serves that purpose. Another advantage is that water, which is usually held in suspension in compressed air, will to a considerable extent be deposited in the curled hair filling of the strainer and will then, drain out of the strainer into the reservoir, so that the strainer positionedas described will act to eliminate water from the compressed air as well as dirt and other foreign matter.
The strainer may beeasily removed for cleaning or renewal by simply taking ofl? the cap plate 2, as will be evident.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fluid pressure reservoir provided with a head having a central opening, a pipe connected to a passage in said head leading to the face of the head, a fluid strainer mounted in said opening and extending into said reservoir, and a cap plate secured to the face of said head for clamping said strainer in place and having a passage leading from said strainer and registering with the passage in said head;
'In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
LESTER A. FOWLER.
