RUTH ENGLEMAN, or TULSA, OKLAHOMA.
CASE. l
.Application filed March 24, 1823. Serial No. 627,403. l
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RUTH ENGLnuAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a display cabinet,
the general object of the invention being to provide means for displaying books, magazines and the like in open condition so as to attract attention to them by a. partial display of their contents while preventing access to them.
Another object of the invention is to provide a storage place for the books and magazines' not on display and also to provide means for closing and locking the cabinet whenever desired.
A still further obj ect of the invention is to provide an awning for the front of the cabinet with lighting means carried thereby for illuminating the display parts of the cabinet.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had tothe accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or co-rresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the invention with the awning in raised position.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the awning in closed position.
Figure 3 is a side view.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of one of the display drawers opened.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view.
Figure 6 is a plan view.
Figure 7 is a detail view.
In these views 1 indicates the cabinet, the front of which is provided with the openings 2 to receive the display drawers 3 and the storage drawers 4. The lower part of the cabinet is provided with a rear extension 5 so that the storage drawers are of considerable length as they extend into said eXtension. These storage drawers are preferably arranged to slide in their compartments while the display drawers are hinged at their bottoms to the cross pieces 6 of the cabinet i rods 10 atveach end thereof which pass through openingsV in a holder llwhich eX- tends across the drawer and which is held in adjusted position by the nuts 12 on the rods. The front of the display drawer comprises .a transparent member 13 so that the books or the like placed in the drawer can be seen, said objects being held against the front by the holder 11. The downward movement of each drawer is limited by the flexible members 14 which are shown in the form of chains which may however, take the form of toggle links.
The books and magazines are preferably arranged in the drawers in open condition with a half of one ob]- ect overlapping a half of another object so that but one page of each book or magazine can be seen, though it will of course be -understood that the 0bjects may be so arranged that two pages can be seen. This will attract attention to the objects by affording a partial knowledge of the contents so as to arouse interest enough to make one desire to purchase the object. Duplicate copies of the books or magazines on display can be placed in the storage drawers.
A frame 15 is connected with the upper end of the cabinet and extends outwardly at an angle therefrom and this frame is adapted to hold an awning 16 which is hingedly connected with the cabinet by the hinges 17. The awning may be raised and lowered by means of the cable 18 and pulleys 19 and the awning is so made that when in lowered position it will cover the face of the cabinet and it may be locked in this position by means of the lock 20. The sides of the cabinet extend outwardly, as at 21, to engage the yedges of the awning when the same is in lowered position. I may provide a strip 22 for supporting the awning in raised position so as to hold the awning if 'the cable 'should break or become slack. A hook 23 is also provided at the top of the awning for recelving the cable when the awning is closed. A reiiector 24 is placed on the upper part of the awning 'to receive one or more lamps 25 for illuminating the front of the cabinet.
When the cabinet is to be used in a building the awning frame andawning may be dispensed with.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my.invention will be readily apparent. I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall withinthe scope of the appended claim.
Vhat I claim ist- A cabinetof the'cla'ss described comprising .a body having compartments, doors closing said compartments, v said doors hingedly connected at their lower edges with said body, said doorsnormally occupying a u vertical position 'and closing said compart-y ments, said doors adapted to swing out of said body on 'said hinges vto occupy a horizontal position, transparent panels in front of said doors, holders carried by said doors to swing therewith for holding objects against 'said panels, and said holders comprising a holder plate and Vscrew thread-ed rods passing through the holder plate at each end thereof and carried by the door, and nuts on said screw threaded rods for holding the holder plates in adjusted positions with respect to the transparent panels.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
