provide a device which will accurately register the force applied to a golf ball in making a putting stroke.
It is a further object of the invention to construct a device of this character in such a manner that it will provide a target at which the golf ball may be projected.
It is a further object of the invention to provide means whereby after'the device has been operated by the impact of the golf ball the same will be locked-inits operated position until released bythe operator.

reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention and taken on the line l1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation, partly in section, taken at right angles to Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a top plan view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises a housing 5, preferably rectangular in form. One of the side walls of the housing 5 is cut out, as designated by the reference character 6, and the bottom wall of the housing has a corresponding cut-out portion 7.
One of the walls of the housing is provided with a door 8, hinged as at 9, and mounted upon the inner face of said door 8 is a. resilient clip 10 adapted to receive and retain a golf ball when not in use, the golf ball being shown in broken lines in Fig. 1.
Depending from the top wall of the housing 5 is a substantially Ushaped member 11, and mounted in the legs 12 of said U-shaped member 1-1 is a shaft 13. Secured to the shaft by set screws, pins or the like, 14 are Serial No. 658,605.
depending arms 15, and connecting the lower ends-of said depending arms 15 is a buffer plate 16. This buffer plate 16 is mountedin the cut-out portion 60f the housing heretofore mentioned.
Mounted on the shaft 13 is a beveled gear 17, and said beveled gear 17 is fixed to' the shaft 13 in such a manner that it rotates therewith.
Securedbetween the legs 12 of the U- shapedmember 11 is abearing or journal 18, and mounted in this hearing or journal 18 is a shaft 19. On one end of the shaft 19, and-meshing with the beveled gear 17, is a beveled gear 20; and said shaft is provided adjacent its opposite end with a beveled gear 21. A toothed ratchet wheel 22 is likewise carried by the shaft 19' and is secured-thereto by means of a -nut, or the like, 23. V
Projecting through the top wall of the housing 5 is a shaft 24:, and mounted on the lower end of said shaft24 and meshing with the'beveled gear 21 is a beveledgear 25. Secured-to the upper end of the shaft 24L is a pointer 26, and said pointer 26 travels over a calibrated dial 27. This dial-27-is enclosed by a crystal 28 mounted in a suitable bezel 29.
Extending through one of the sidewalls of the housing there is a shaft 30, the-inner end of which is mounted in a bearing 31 depending from the U-shaped member 11. This shaft has a pawl 32 which is adapted to engage the ratchet toothed wheel 22. Exteriorly of the housing 5 the shaft 30 is provided with an operating handle 33 by means of which the pawl 32 may be disengaged from the ratchet wheel 22.
The device operates in the following manner: A golf ball is projected against the buffor 16 and the buffer and its arms 15 serve to rock the shaft 18 as a result of the impact of the ball against the buffer 16. Through the medium of the bevel gears 20 and 21 the beveled gear 25 will be rotated, and through. the medium of the shaft 2 1 the pointer 26 will be moved relative to the calibrated dial and will give a reading on the dial corresponding to the impact of the ball with the buffer 16.
As the buffer is operated the ratchet wheel 22 passes beneath the pawl 32. hen, however, the buffer tends to return under its own weight it is prevented by engagement of the teeth of the ratchet Wheel 22 with the pawl 32 until the pawl is released or disengaged from the teeth by a rocking of the handle 33 to partially rotate the shaft 30 and disengage the pawl 32 from the teeth of the ratchet wheel 22.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present device provides a new and improved mechanism whereby the force impart-ed to a golf ball in making a putting stroke can be determined, and if ones position or distance from the device be measured it is apparent that the proper force necessary to make a perfect putt can be determined in the following manner: Assuming that a person stands five feet from the device and the impact of the ball on the buffer 16 is registered as six feet, it is obvious that the ball would have over run the hole; or, if the reading on the device is less than five feet, it is also obvious that the stroke was short.
Claims.
l. A practice device for golf putting, comprising a housing, a pendulum buffer mounted within the housing and adapted to receive the impact of a golf ball, a registering mechanism, and a train of gearing interposed between the pendulum buffer and the registering mechanism for operating the latter upon impact of a ball with the pendulum buffer.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a housing, a U-shaped member depending from the top wall thereof, a shaft mounted in the legs of the U-shaped member, a pendulum buffer secured to said shaft and adapted to receive the impact of a golf ball to operate said shaft, a registering mechanism, and a train of gearing between the pendulum buffer and the registering mechanism for operating the registering mechanism to cause the same to register the force of impact of a golf ball with the pendulum buffer.

A device of the character described, comprising a housing, a buffer mounted in a cut-out portion in one of the walls of said housing, a shaft from which said buffer is suspended, a registering mechanism, a train of gearing interposed between the buffer and the registering mechanism and adapted to operate the registering mechanism to cause the same to register the force of impact of a missile with the buffer, and means for locking said registering mechanism in operated position.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a housing, a buffer mounted in a cut-out portion in one of the walls of said housing, a shaft from which said buffer is suspended, a registering mechanism, a train of gearing interposed between the buffer and the registering mechanism to cause the same to register the force of impact of a missile with the buffer, means for locking said registering mechanism in operated position, and manually operated means for releasing said locking means. 7
5. A device of the character described comprising a casing, indicating mechanism carried thereby, a pair of depending arms, means connecting said arms with said indicating mechanism and including a shaft carrying said arms and a train of gearing, a buffer supported by said arms and adapted to receive the impact of a golf ball to operate the indicating mechanism, and means for automatically locking said indicating mechanism in its operated position.
