Be it known that I, RAYMOND A. Cow, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding Machines, of which the follow;

y invention relates to a grinding machine and more particularly to a mechanism for traversing and rotating the work.
In grinding the external cylindrical surfaces of such articles as spindles which have portions of reduced diameter, it is necessary, in order to remove one piece of work and insert another in the machine, to feed the wheel away from the work, move the work axially to remove it from contact with the grinding wheel and to stop the work rotation. These various operations require the expenditure of eflort, thought and time on the part of the operator and so cut down the production of the machine to aconsiderable extent.
It is the main object of this invention to provide a mechanism which permits the two movements required to stop and start the work rotation and to traverse the table to be combined in a single operation or which permits them to be carried out independently.
With this and other objects in "view as will be. apparent in the following disclosure, my inventlon resides in the combination of parts set forth in the specification and covered by the claims appended hereto.

' This invention, while of broader utility, is particularly applicable to the grinding machine construction shown in the patent to Charles H. Norton, No. 762,838, dated June 14, 1904. A grinding machine of this type comprises a base .10 having a work carmg table 11, mounted for reciprocation thereon past the peripheral surface of a power driven, rotating grinding wheel 12.

A suitable belt shift mechanism may yoke 21, engaging the belt and operated by the bell crank lever 22 pivotally mounted on the fixed support which carries the drum 17. This bell crank lever 22 is turned about its pivot by means of the rod 23, which, projects downwardly behind the grinding machine and is connected by suitable linkagewith a hand operated lever on the front for manual control of the driving belt. The drum is, in the present illustration, mounted on a standard 25 and carried in suitable bearings 26 and 27 mounted on the upper portion of the standard, as is well known in this art.
In order to reciprocatethe table on which the Work is mounted, I may employ various ,reciprocated by means of a gear 34, mounted on the shaft 35,'which is supported in suitable bearings located on the machine base. This shaft 35 may be rotated manually by the hand wheel 36, mounted on a short shaft 37, which has a pinion'38 on its rear end in mesh with another pinion 39 on the shaft 35, whereby rotation of the hand whee136 will turn the gear 34 and move the table.
The machine is provided with suit-able mechanism 40 for feeding the wheel toward and from the work, which may be constructmanner, such as is shown in the prior patent to Norton. The table may be properly positionedwith the aid of adjustable dogs 41 and 42, located in a T slot 43 on the side of the machine. which are adapted to engage a stop pin 44, mounted on the machine base.
In order to cut down the number of manual operations required to take out a piece of work, insert a new one and start the machine into operation, I provide a mechanism for connecting'the table traverse with with the ring 49,
the belt shifting mechanism so that by a single-manual operation the work may. be moved to a new position out of contact with the grinding wheel and'the'workrotation simultaneously stopped. To' this end, I provide a device for connecting the rod 23 with the hand wheel .36, and one embodiment of my invention may comprise the construction shown in the drawings. As there illustrated, the rod 23 is connected to a bell crank device 45, which is mounted on a shaft 46 carried on so constructed that mitted to the rod 23 from a link 47 pivotally connected thereto. The other end of this link is pivotally connected to a hand operated device mounted to rotate about the axis of the wheel 36. This device may comprise'a r'ng 49 mounted on an annular the back side of, the hand slide way on wheel 36 for rotary movement relative to the hand wheel- A hand lever 50' is fixed to the ring 49 and the link is so located on the ring, substantially tangential thereto, that rotation of the ring causes a consequent movement of the link 47 and the belt shifting rod 23. This ring 49 may be suitably held in place by means of a clampin ring 51 screwed to the back side of the hand wheel 36. p
In order to connect the hand wheel 36 I provide a pin 55 slidably mounted in a hand wheel 36. The ring 49 is provided with a groove 58 on its internal face, or preferab y a series of grooves formed around its innerperimeter so that the ring might be clamped to the wheel in any suitable position relative thereto. The pin 55 is, therefore, tact with the gropve 58 in the ring or drawn outwardly so that the inner end of the pin is free from engagement with the ring, thus permitting the latter to rotate relative to the hand wheel.
Inorder to hold the pin in either a locking or unlocked position, I provide any suitable mechanism such as'a spring pressed plunger 60 slidably mounted in a hole in the boss 57 arranged at right angles to the hole 56. Two annular ves 61 and 62' are provided on the pin 55 so that the locking pin 60 may engage one or the other and thereby hold the pin 55 in engagement with the ring49 or prevent engagement therewith. So that the spring pressed plunger may be operated easily, the ridge between the grooves 61 and 62 is so shaped as to permit the end of the pin 60 to slide easily from one groove to the other as the pin 55 is pulled out or pushed in.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz.
1. A grinding machine com rising a reciprocable work supporting ta lo, a power driving mechanism. to rotate the work, a manual control therefor, a manually operable device to reciprocate the table, and connections including a releasable locking device between said control and said table operating device which are so constructed and arranged that movement ofthe table may control the power or the power may be independently of each other.
2. A inding machine comprising a reciprocab e table, power mechanism to manually operable hand wheel connected reciprocate the table, a manually controllable device to connect and disconnectthe power from the work, which includes a member mounted concentrically with said hand wheel, and means'to connect or disconnect said hand wheel and member.
3. A grinding machine comprising a reciprocable work supporting table, a mechanism to reciprocate the table including a hand wheel, power driving mechanism to rotate the work on said table, a manually controlled device to start and stop the power driving mechanism including a member r0.- tatable concentrically with said hand wheel, releasable means to connect said hand wheel and member whereby movement of the table coiitrols the power and means 'to lock said releasable connecting means in either an operative or inoperative position.
