EDIVIUND C. TREE-SE, F HUNTINGTON, NEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO SULLIVAN MACHINERY COIVEPANY, A CORPORATION OF IvIASSACHUSE'ITS.
MINING MACHINE.
Application filed October 12, 1921. Serial N'o. 507,344.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it knownthat I, EDMUND C. Tnnnsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of- Cabell and State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Mining Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to mining machines.
It has for its object to provide an improved feeding mechanism especially adapted for use with mining machines of the room and pillar type. A further object of my invention is to provide an improved sumping mechanism whereby a machine utilizing a guide relative to which the machine moves during sumping, as for instance a cutter chain guard, may be conveniently and expeditiously sumped into the work. These and other objects and advantages of my improved construction will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration two forms which my'invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings,
Fig, 1 is a plan view of my invention applied to a mining machine utilizing a cutterchain guard, themachine being of the chain propelled. type.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation ot the rear end of the construction shown inFig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of my invention applied to a similar machine utilizing a cutter chain guard, the machine however being of the cable fed type.
Referring first to the illustrative construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a mining machine is there shown comprising a motor casing 1 and cutter bar 2 projecting therefrom, the bar carrying a cutter chain 3 equipped with cutter bits 4, and the casing carrying a feed operating member 5 having a'cooperating flexible feeding member 6, herein in the form of a feed chain, which may be disposed relative to usual guide members 7 in such a manner as to feed the machine transversely of the face in a usual ber is, as herein, controlled by a friction mechanism including a controllingmember 8 and a reverse lever 9, the reverse lever being adapted to prevent operation of the triotion lever 8 and to cause the rotation of the feed operating member 5 in one direction to produce a slow teed when the member 9 is in the full line position illustrated. As also in a well known construction, a chain guard is carried by the casing 1, herein of the telescopic type and adapted to telescope in the casing 1 and comprising the usual side members 10 at the side of the cutter chain and the usual cross bar 11 connecting the side members and having a shoe 12 adapted to slide on the mine bottom, the chain guard being as usual adapted to be held in extended position by suitable means as by apin 13 and to be fixed to the bottom during sumping by suitable means as by a jack l4;
In my improved construction, I have pro vided a guiding member 15, herein in the form of the feed sprocket, rotatable on a transverse axis on the transverse member 11 and, specifically, herein rotatable on such an axis on a protruding end 16 of the member 11 extending closely adjacent the right hand rib, the jack 14 being mounted on a corresponding protruding end 17 on the opposite side of the ban. Inmy improved construction, one end of the flexible feeding member 6 is also carried from the feed operating member 5 around two of the rear guides 7 and to and around the guide from which it is then carried back and fixed to the machine. Herein, the chain 6 is attached to the rear end of the machine, a suitable hook 18 being provided on the end of the chain to cooperate with a plurality of chain links 19 carried on a suitable eye 20 011 the receding side of the rear end of the machine. 1
In the use of my improved construction, the machine is unloaded from its truck in the usual manner preferably'with its cutter chain guard 10, 11 extended and held in extended position by suitable means as by the pin 13. IVhen the machine is disposed adjacent the rib in position for sumping as shown in Fig. 1, the pin 13 is withdrawn and the chain guard 10, 11 is jacked down in position in the usual manner by the jack 1%, while the flexible feeding member is extended forward and around the guide 15 in a double strand connection with its free end connected by the hook 18 to the chain links 19. The feed operating member 5 is then rotated, through a suitable movement of the reverse lever9 in to its full line position, in such a manner as to rotate the feed operating member 5 at its fast or reverse speed, and by drawing in the flexible feeding member 6 thereby cause the machine to be moved bodily forward relative to the chain guard and the guide member at one-half its usual fast or reverse speed, although it will be understood thatthis speed may be varied by suitable adjustment of the friction mechanism including the lever 8. Ohviously'when the bar 2 has been sumped in under the'coal, the chain guard 10, 11 will have telescoped intothe casing 1 and through a suitable reconnection of the flexible feeding member to the right and left hand, ribs, the machine may be straightened inthe cut and moved transversely in a usual manner. 1
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 3, it will be noted that a machine 1 is shown. having the same cutter bar 2, cutter chain 3, and nits l, but adapted to be driven by two flexible feeding members 21 and 22 which are in turn driven by drums 23 and 2% in a well known manner, the drum 23 being the slow feed drum while the drum 24: is the fast feed drum. In this construction, as in my preceding construction, a chain guard 10, 11 is provided which is adapted to be jacked in position by a ad: 14 and held in extended position by a pin 13, the construction in that respect being identical with that heretofore described. Here, however, the guiding member carried by this chain guard is in the form of a horizontally disposed guide sheave 25 rotatable ona vertical axis, and the cable 22 which extends around this guide sheave 25 is connected as through a.
tion may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of'the appended claims.
