untreu 'rares i MORRIS P. HOLMES, OF CLABEMONT, NEW-HAMPSHIRE. ASSIGNOR T SULWAN- MACHINERY CO'MPANY, A CORPORATION 0F MASSACHUSETTS.
MENING MACHINE.
Application filed Marchi28, 1918, Serial No. 225,340.
To all w71 om z'z may concern Be it known that l, hlouurs l). HOLMES,
'Claremonh in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and usefulA lmprovem'ents in Min l;
ing Machines, ,of which the following is a full. clear and exact specification.
My invention relates to mining machines.
l0 It has. for its object to provide an improved mining machine equipped with improved and simplified transrmssion and con;l trolling .mechanism whereby the .tiexibihty ont operation of the machine is increased.
, A further object of my invention is to provide an improved transmission mechanism for such a machine equipped with improved means whereby the same mechanism maybe lutilized in feeding:Y the machine relative in driving the machine when the same is mounted upon its truck. A still turther.`vobject .of my invention is to provide a mining machine of improved and simplified construction which may be very readily and cheaply manufactured. These and other objects and advantages of my improved construction will,
however` hereinafter more fully appear. In the accompanying' drawings l have i" shown for purposes of illustration one ernbodiment which my invention may assume .in practice.
1n these drawinga* Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine mounted upon its truck and connected thereto. y
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the machine at the face, partiallyv in section. showing the transmission mechanism` the section being taken substantially on line 2?-2 of Fifi. 1V..
Fig. 3 is "a detail sectional view taken substantially `on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic lview showing the machine unloading from its truck.
"" Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic illustration of the machine duringthe startingd of a cut from right to left.
Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic illustration of the machine during' the cutting' across a face "0 from left to right.
Fig. 7 is a diagran'imatic view of the machine returning1 to position upon its -trucli after the completion ot the cut.
In this illustrative construction. I have I 'l showna mining `machineof the usual flex- 1 equipped with a citizen of the United' States. residiugat` kmerating member Renewed ctober 8, 1923.
ibly fed room and piller type having a trame the usual forwardly projecting cutter bar 2 and a cutter chain 3 revolving' -around the bar, the cutter chain being driven from the motor Il in any well nown manner. It will also be observed that the miningr machine shown herein is provided with a rear driving sprocket or feed 5 driven from the motor 4 through transmission mechanism, hereinafter described, and adapted, through the. cooperation of suitable `guide sprockets 6 and 7' at the rear end or" the machine and cooperating alternatively operative guide sprockets 8 at the front end `thereot, to 'feed the machine to the right or lei't and relative to the work and a flexible feeding member, herein shown .in the form of a chain 9, all in a well known manner. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the mining machine is al-f'.
.cham and sprocket connection 14, which is itself driven from the machine, as hereinn after more fully brought out.
1n' my improved construction. it will be observed that the armature shaft 15 of the motor l is disposed longitudinally of the machine and provided with a beveled gear 16 on-its rear end meshing wit-h a larger horizontally disposed beveled gear 17 which is in turn connected to an upright shaft 18, preferably driving the cutter chain driving sprocket not shown). 1t will also be observed that in this construction the armature sha-ft 15 carries a. pinion 19 between the beveled gear 16 and the frame 1, and that this pinion meshes with a larger gear 20 carried on a longitudinally disposed shaft 21 located at one side oi the axis of the machine and journaled in suitablebearing-s 22 and 23 in the frame. Attention is alsodirected to the fact that the upright shaft 18 is also provided with a. worm 24 which in turn meshes with a worm gear 25 of substantially the same diameter as the gear 20 and likewise `iournaled on the shaft 21 but et a. point in rear of that 'gear and rotatable in an opposite direction to the rear 20. By thus spacing apart the `ojears 2O and 25, it will be observed that it S Possible .50 Ailselt friction clutch members 26y and 27 Within the peripheries of the gears and operatively connect these clutch members through toggle members 28 to a central reciprocable member 29 splined to the shaft 21 at 30 and reciprocable relative thereto in such a manner as alternatively to cause either the friction members 26 to .enga-ge or clutch the gear 25, or the friction members 27, to engage or clutch the gear 20. As shown, this member 29 is operated by means of a controlling member 31 pivoted at 32 upon the :trame and in turn pivotally connected at 33 to a rearwardly extending rod 34 which is operatively connected to an arm 35 formed on a change speed controlling lever 36, which in turn extends through a suitable aperture 37 in the roar end of the frame to within convenient reach of an operator. Thus, it will be observed that by manipulating ythe member 36, the speed and direction of rotation of the shaft 21may be varied as desired. a slow speed in in a suitable one direction beingobtainable by throwing the clutch member 26 into engagement with the gear 25, while a fast speed in the opposite direction isobtainable by throwing the clutch member 27 into engagement with the gear 2L).
operatively connected to the rear lend of the shaft 21 and acting as a controlling meehanism controlling the connection of either the fast or 'slow speed transmission mechanism above described, is improved cooperating rcversing mechanism. As shown, this mech; anism is operatively connected to the shaft 21 through a beveled gear 38 carried on the rear end of the latter, which beveled gear constantly meshes 4with a plurality of/cooperating spaced beveled gears 39 and 40 rotatably mounted near Aone end of a transverse shaft 41, herein shown to be journaled bearing 42 and another` hereinafter described and formed by `the/ sleeve 6.3 on opposite sides of the rear end of the frame. As shown, of these beveled gears 39 and 40, the beveled gear 39 is provided-with a cooperating friction clutch member 43 similar to the clutch member 27, while the beveled gear is provided with a similar cooperating clutch member 44 similar to the clutc member 26,and these several clutch members are connected through toggle membeing conveniently dis bers 45, similar to the toggle members 2.8, to a reciprocating clutch member 46 splined to the ,shaft 41 atr47'and otherwise similar to d the clutch member,.29. As illustrated, this member 46 is also reciprocable longitudinally of the shaft by means of a reversing controlling member or lever 48 pivoted at 49 on the frame Aand extending through a suitable aperture 50 in the rear end of the same so that it may be readily grasped by an operator, the, two levers 36 and 48 posed` adjacent one another. By the provision of my improved preferably reversing mechanism, it will be observed that it is thus possible through manipu lation of the levery48 to reverse the direction of rotation of the `shaft 41 whenever desired, regardless of the speed or'direction of rotation of its driving shaft 21.
Operat-ively connected to the shaft 21 andcontrolled through my improved fast or slow` speed mechanism and through my improved reversing mechanism, each above described, is any improved mechanism for 'rotating the feed sprocket 5. As shown, a -worm 51 i's. rotatably mounted intermediate the ends of the shaft 41 and meshes with a suitable worin gear 52 which is carried on a -vertical stud 53 and fixed to the feed sprocket 5 so that the latter is rotated whenever the Worm 51 is connected to the shaft and rotated thereby through mechanismhereinafter described. It will also be noted that the worm 51 is provided with oppositely disposed sleeve portions 54 and 55, one of which abuts against the hub of the gear 40,
while the other is suitably journaled in sponding teeth 62 'formed on the inner end' of a sleeve 63 journaled at 64`in the frame and having fixedly attached to its outer end `a truck driving sprocket 65. As illustrated, the clutch member 59 is reciprocable relative to the shaft 41by means of a pivoted feed and power truck drive controlling member '66 pivoted at 67 on the frame and having its operating handle extending through a suitable aperture 68 in the rear end of the frame within convenient reach ofthe operator, this lever preferably, as shown herein, being disposed on thel opposite side of the frame from the levers 36 and 48. As shown, the sprocket is herein connected to a suitable sprocket 69 carried on the rear axle 13, by means ot' a chain connection 70. Through the use ofthis improved mechanism, Ait will be observed that by movement of y*the controlling member 66 in one direction the feed sprocket 5 may be driven from the .shaft 41, and that by movement Vof the controlling member in the opposite direction the truck riving sprocket 65 rmay be lconnected to the shaft 41, while each of these members is disconnectable from that shaft when the conttolling member assumes the neutral position shown in Fig. 2.
In the operation of my improved construction, .it will be understood that the maf the operation of the4 feed sprocket on the chine is unloaded and sumped in under the neas feed chain 9 in a well known manner and as shown diagrammatically for purposes of illustration in Figs. Il to 7. in4 the first of these figures, i. e. Fig. 4i, the machine is shown unloading` from its truck. lln Fig. 5 the machine is shown in full lines at the completion of suniping' and in dotted lines in a position such as might be occupied at the beginning of sumping. In view of the fact that the machine may cut in either` direction Fig'. 6 discloses the machine cutting' across a face from left to right. ln Fig. 7, the machine is shown returning to position upon the truck preparatory to moving' oft to another Working face. During these various steps it will be observed that when the member' 66 is operated to connect the Worm 51 to the shaft All, an operator is cnabled, through the controlling lever 36, to vary the speed of rotation of the' feed sprocket 5 at will. It will also be observed that through manipulation of the lever 4S the operator is enabled to vary the direction of rotation of this sprocket at will, re- ,frardless of the speed at which it is rotated. IThus, through the use of the tivo levers 36 and 48, he is enabled to obtain either a fast or slow feed in one direction, or a fast or slow feed in the opposite direction. Jlttention isalso directed to the fact that the connection of all ot' this mechanism is controllable by the lever 66. Thus. when the machine is fed. as shownin Fig. into' its loaded position upon its truck, the feed chain then being' hooked over the abutment 71 in a usual manner, the operator is enabled by the operation of the lever 66 to disconnect thc feed member 5 from the shaft 41 and connect the truck driving' sprocket G5 to that shaft, and thereafter., through the controlling levers 86 and 41S and the transmission mechanism controlled thereby, drive the truck at fast or slow speed in either direction, as desired, Without rotatingthe feed d living member 5. Conversely, when the inachine is to be unloaded, the chain 9 then being connected to a jack or other point in advance of the machine in a usual manner, as shown 1in Fig. 7, 'the operator is similarly able in one operation to disconnect the truck drive and connect the feed member 5. `During these loading und unloading operations,
it will of course be evident that the chain` 70 may he readily applied to or removed from the sprocket and thus rendered oper ative or inoperative as the latter moves rela- Ative tothe truck and the rear axle. lt will `also be observed that after the chain has been dropped lover this sprocketf dur-I -ing theloading operation, the tension de-A sired to render it mostetliective may be read` ily obtained by means of an adjustable stop 72, limitingl the rearward movement of the machine relative to the truck. A.. suitable pivoted latch 72 will then, as shown in ,oss
Fig. l, serve to hold the machine in proper position on the truck. i .ln the use of my improved construction, it will be observed that all necessity for the provision of any interlocking mechanism between the various controlling devices is entirely eliminated. the operator being able to pass from ono feed to the other, by a simple movement of the proper operating' lever or leversand without danger of damage to the feeding mechanism. llt will also be evident that through the use of separate frictions 27 and 2G for the fast and slow feed mechanisms which include the gears 20 and 25, respectively7 it is possible. not only-to facilitate the manipulation of the controlling' mechanism, the lever 36 losing movable freen ly Without any necessity for providing an interlock therefor, but also to proportion each friction to its load, and thereby avoid overloading,f on the fast feed, Which is ordinarily about fifteen times the speed of the slow feed. At the same time, it Will be observed that through the provision of the reversing' mechanism it is also possible to reverse the feed sprocket 5 irrespective of its speed or direction of rotation. It will also be. noted that as the clutches 26 and 27 are driven at speeds varying,r in proportion to their respective loads, it is entirely unnecessary to provide any means for loadingr the friction clutch 27 in the fast feed transmission, my improved mechanism acting sfficiently with equal loading,f on the fast and slow feed friction' clutches 27 and 26. It will also be observed that through my improved construction it is possible not only to feed the machine with the desired ilexibility.` but also, through the same mechanism, to drive and., by use of the reverse friction, brake the truck from the machine and thus eliminate all necessity for expensive truck driving mechanismnpon the rear end ot the truck frame. at the same time that the desired dexiloility of truck movement is obtained. It will also be notedV that it is made possible to run the power truck independently of the feed, or vice versa, through the provision of the controlling mechanism including the controlling member nects the feed and connects the power truck, or disconnects the power truck and connects the feed. Attention is also directed to the fact that at the same time that these various imprWements are. obtained, the number of gears and jaw clutches necessary is minimized. lhviously, in the use of my improvement, the motor 4 may be controlled by any suitable controllingl mechanism. such as a controller 7f3 controllable by usual controller handles 74. my improved construction also permitting of an exceedingly comihodious provision for the controller 7 3 and its cooperating resistance 75 in a suitable 66 which in one operation discoi'renclosed chamber 76 disposed at4 one side of the frame. It will also be observed that in the use of my improvement an electric cable reel 77 may be mounted, as usual7 on sup- 5 ports 78 at the rear end of the truck frame mining machine a truck driving member vand means driven bv said motor and operative means driven and driven from' the, motor. or wheels, as through a rotating friction member 79 journaled at 80 on the frame and itself rotatable through a chain and sprocket connection 8l driven from the` rear axle. These and other advantages oit' my improved construction Will, however, be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While I have in this application specifically described one embodiment which my'invention may assume in practice, it will be understood "that this form of the sameis used only for purposes of illustration, and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms Without departingr from itsv spiritor the scope of the appended claims.
