Midway between said flanges or beads 7, the sides of the box are also provided with vertical ribs 8 formed integrally therewith, and arranged parallel with the flanges and consequently in a position to occupy the aforesaid grooves 4, when the journal box is properly seated between the pedestal aws 3.
rl`hc ribs 8 are provided with cut-out portions or seats 9 located substantially midway of their lengths, and in position to register or aline with the lower, inner open ends of the aforesaid chambers when the journal box is thus seated, said cut-out portions or seats being arranged at the same angle as the adjacent chamber, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
Mounted in each chamber is a dog or locking member l() formed of suitable metal, of a cross sectional ysize and shape to freely slide upwardly or downwardly within the chambers, and having its lower, or active end bevelled, as at 11, to abut against the side wall of the journal box and to tit within the aforesaid cut-out portions or seats 9 between the portions of the ribs 8.
rThe length of the dog is such as to permit the same to be raised until the upper end strikes the upper end of the respective chamber, when the lower end is entirely free of the lower end of the upper portion of the rib, when the box may be lowered and removed from the frame member.
The dogs are each provided with apertures 12 located near the terminals of the same, said apertures serving to receive the end of a suitable tool, or pointed implement, when elevating the dogs out of engagement with the ribs on the journal box. Such implement may be inserted through oneV or the other of the aforesaid inclined slots 6, and engaged with the exposed upper aperture12 in the dog, and the latter slid along its respective chamber until the lower aperture appears at the lower end ofthe said slot,
when a similar implement may then be .in-
serted in the same, and the dog is held up and out of engagement. Then the other dog is similarly released, the journal box may be removed from the truck frame member, after the latter has been jacked up in the proper manner. When assembling the parts, the dogs are held up as described and, after the journal box has been placed in position and the jacks are allowed to lower the frame, the dogs will automatically lock themselves with the journal box, by simply removing the holding pin, said dogs being sufliciently heavy to gravitate down the chambers and engage the seats provided for the same.
From the foregoing it will be seen that av journal boxes in the side frame members of car trucks, the coacting parts, with the exception of the two locking dogs, being readily formed in the journal box and side frame respectively, during the process of casting the same, and that such, locking will be accomplished automatically without the use of bolts or Anuts or similar' fastening means commonly employed; and it will be further seen that the assembling and disassembling of the parts may be edected without the use of special tools or other aid aside'from the necessary lifting jack or jacks.
lVhat is claimed is l. Means for holding journal boxes in car trucks, comprising a side frame having spaced pedestal jaws provided in their opposed faces with vertical grooves and chambers communicating with said grooves, a
journal box adapted to fit between said jaws and having ribs slidably engaging said grooves, said ribs being provided with seats, and dogs loosely mounted in the chambers and adapted to gravitate into said seats to hold the journal box in position. Y
2. A journal box for car trucks having a side frame provided with spaced pedestal jaws, the opposed, vertical faces of said jaws having longitudinal grooves extending from top to bottom thereof, said frame having interior inclined chambers between its side walls and communicating at their lower ends with said grooves at intermediate points of the latter, said journal box having vertical ribs adapted to slide into the grooves when said box is mounted between the jaws, said ribs having cut-out portions to register with the lower ends of the chambers, and gravity-actuated dogs mounted in the chambers and adapted to engage the cut-out portions of the ribs to prevent the journal'box falling out of the truck frame. v
3. The combination with a car truck side frame having spaced pedestal jaws provided with guideways in their opposed, vertical sides, and having a chamber in each jaw arranged at an incline and communicating at their lower ends with said guideways inter-k mediate of the lengths of thelatter, the side walls of said chambers having longitudinal, inclined slots, of a journal box adapted to lit between the jaws and having vertical ribs for engagement with the guideways, vsaid ribs having inclined recesses to aline withY the lower ends of the chambers, and a dog mounted in each chamber and adapted to gravitate into locking engagement with the recesses.
4. The combination with a car truck side frame having pedestal jaws, said jaws being provided with vertical grooves in their opposed faces and with opposite, inclined chambers communicating at their lower ends with the grooves, said chambers having Cil their' side walls provided with inclined slots extending longitudinally of the chambers, of a journal box having side ribs adapted to slide upwardly in the grooves when ythe box is seated between the said jaws, said side ribs having inclined seats or recesses in line with the chambers,and a sliding dog mounted in each chamber to gravitate into locking engagement with the seats in the ribs, each dog having a beveled lower end to abut the side of the journal box, and hav ing terminal openings for engagement by a pointed tool to raise the same in its chamber and release the Ljournal box.
