Description
A. LAUKHUFF DIE Filed June 12, 1922 June 23, 1925.
FIG 5 17 i 17 Z-j V2 '15 WITNESSES Alf AXE/i205 a 714 E .W I, TTOIQNEY Patented June 23, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED LAITKHUFF, OF SHOREWOOD, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR T0 ALBERT O. TROSTEL',
OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
DIE.
Application filed June 12, 1922. Serial No. 567,765.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALFRED LAUKHUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing in the village of Shorewood. county of Milwaukee, and State of \Visconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dies. of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a sectional die more particularly for use in con'ipressing fibrous material to a finished shape, such as a. sphere, cylinder or other solid of revolution.
lVith this and other objects in view the invention consists in the die hereinafter described and all equivalents.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional View through a device embodying the invention, shown at the time of charging the die; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view-taken on the line 22 of Fig. 3 with the parts in forming position; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the die.
The die includes one part composed of sections 4: and 5 and another part 6. It also includes a filling section 7 and means for clamping the sections 41-. 5 and 6 together.
Where, as in the embodiment shown, the die is used for forming a sphere from a roughly formed and compacted body 8 of fibrous material, such asfelted hair, the
WVith some materials it is preferable to provide a filling section 7, here shown as in the form of a tube having an outwardly flared end 12. An annular tongue and groove connection 13 is provided between the sections 5 and 7.
The part 6 forms the plunger, slidably movable in the section 5, and in the case of a sphere is provided with a hen'iispherical cavity 14 in its inner end. It also has an annular flange 15.
In the case of a sphere, with the parts shown in the position of Fig. 1, the mass of material to be compressed has been intro duced through the filling opening 12 into-the die cavity. Then the section 7 is removed and the part 6 is moved down to compress the material into a finished sphere 16, as shown in Fig. 2. This relative movement of the part 6 with reference to the parts 4 and 5 may be done with a suitable press, but in order that the material in the die may be allowed to set or dry while still in the die, I provide a plurality of clamps 17 having hooked ends 18 engageable with the top and bottom portions of the die. Spaced lugs'19 are provided on the basesection to receive between them the lower end of each clamp 17 and thus prevent its lateral movement. When the clamps 17 have been applied the die may be removed from the press and the material therein subjected to a drying heat, where such is desired.
It will be noted that by making the base section 4 separate from the section 5 it becomes an easy matter to remove the compressed article from the die when the clamps 17 are released.
For a cylinder the head end of the section 4 may be flat and the material compressed between said flat end, the tubular section 5 and the part 6 with a flat inner face, as will be readily understood by those skilled in this art, and I therefore desire it to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to any specific form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations: are specitied in the claim.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a die, the combination of a base section provided with a hemispherical cavity, a tubular section having an interlocking connection with the top of said base section, a plunger section having a hemisphericalcavity in its front end cooperating with the cavity in the base section to form a spherical cavity. said plunger being slidably mounted in said tubular section and contacting with the inner wall thereof throughout its length and having an external flange abutting against the top of said tubular section to limit its movement, and means for holding the plunger section and tubular section to the base section comprising clamps engaging the plunger section and the base section.
ALFRED LAUKHUFF.
