Description

W. P. SCHORTMAN N Y GYRATING TOY v Fild Jain. 27. 1923 umili IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIII lllI|||||llllllllllllllllllllllllllll Patented June 16, 1925.

-GYRATING TOY.
Applicationwled January 27, 1923. Serial No. 615,370.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER yPAUL SoHoR'r- MANN, ya citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and'State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gyrating Toys, of which the following is aV specification. l
Thisk invention refers to toysand more particularly those having a mechanism propelled by wind or air currents. It has among its objects toprovide a toy ofthe naturey referred to, thaty can be placed over a radiator or air register and bepropelled sired fan blade top adapted to catch air currents flowing vertically upwards, such as those that flow from a radiator or floor register. i
In the drawings: y
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a toy embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a detail of the see-saw construction. f
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
Inthe construction shown, I represents a roof or top of a toy merry-go-round, and has a fan blade constructionQ that will rotate in the direction of the arrow indicated on the drawings. Its periphery is provided with a suitable fringe or downward pointing rim 3, adapted to catch air or wind coming from underneath and guide it to the fan. yThis rim also acts as a light fly-wheel and gives'the fan stiffness. Y
The rim is provided with a plurality of pendants 4, arranged to twist and turn as thefan revolves and keep its speed within certain limits, even though the air currents are strong. v f V- The roof or fan top is mounted on a cork or other light element ias indicatedin dotted lines in Figure 1, andin it is placed a shaft which rotates' with theffan. The shaft is shown at 4 and is `loosely mounted in the looking toy with no apparent to cause its actions.
base 6 ofthe toy. The upper portion of the shaft isjournaled by a bent shaft 7 that is preferably arranged as shown in the drawings. This form is light, yet strongenough to prevent the main shaft from being easily bent over in use. Y
The main shaft 4 is also provided with an arm 9 that extends out horizontally and makes contact on every revolution with a bent member 10 that connects with a seesaw 11 and actuates t-he same and causes it to see-saw. The see-saw is overbalanced so that the arm or member l0 will be also in liney with the arm 9 as it comes round at every revolution.
The action of the toy is dual in that the revolving of the fan in one plane and the see-saw action in another gives an active motor force The base of the toy is provided with concaved legs 12 that enable it to be readily placed on the upper parts of a radiator with security or rested on a flat register.
The see-saw construction is of conventional form and is provided with a ring to assist it keeping the main shaft steady and also locate it positively with reference to its actuating members and arms'. The action and function of the toys appear to be evident from the description already given and will not be further outlined. f
Vhile but one form of the invention is shown in the drawings it is not desired to limit this applicationvfor patent to the particular form shown nor in any other way otherwise than limited by the prior art, as other constructions could be used, employying the same principles and coming Within the scope of the appended claim.
Claim. v L i A toy of the class described comprising in combination, a rotatable fan top horizontally disposed' with the greater portion of the extremities of the fan blades nonenclosed except at onel tip of each of the blades, a central member for the fan top, a shaft journaled and secured to said member so as to rotate therewith, a horizontally disposed arm extending from the shaft, a see-saw mechanism disposed at the side ofk the shaft and having one side overbalanced whereby one end of the see-saw will be normally up and the other end normally down, a curved and resilient arm extending upwardly from the see-saw on the side thereof that is normally down, said arm being extended beyond the center of gravity of the see-saw over to the up Side of the see-saw, and whereby the arm of the shaft will engage therewith and swing the seesaw up during one half period of the ro tation of the fan and the shaft arm, and
allow the see-saw to swing down during the second half period of the rotation, a ulcrum support for the see-saW and means for bracing the support and the shaft together, means for holding` the support and shaft.
