On the opposite end of the shaft J is secured a crank disc K having a wrist pin K. Journalled on the wrist Vpin K is a pitman L, the opposite end of which is b1- furcated, see Fig. 8, and is pivoted to a sliding block L on the plunger rod G2 of the pump. This plunger rod G2 1s provided with a head G3 see Fig. 8, with which the sliding block L engages, receding said plunger,` during aV portion of the rotation of said crank disc.
Stationarily secured upon said plunger rod G2 is a clamp ring M, see Figs. 1 and 5, by means of a screw or bolt m, and plvoted to said clamp ring is an arm, N, preferably bifurcated, having cut into the lower edge thereof a` series of ratchet teeth n, said teeth being adapted to engage a suitable surface on said sliding block L, to cause said plunger rod G2 to move forward to force the contents of the pump barrel outwardly through the outlet tube D2.
For the purpose of adjusting the length of the forward thrust of the plunger rod G2, I provide a vertically slidable rod P, see Fig. 3, which is slidably mounted in the pump frame G. Said rod P is provided with a key-way into which a pin, on the screw p in the frame G, projects for the purpose of preventing the turning of the rod P.
Upon the upper end of the slidable rod P is secured an arm P which extends over the plunger rod G2, and secured in said arm P is a rod P2 which is parallel with said plunger rod G2.
Secured to the ratchet arm N is a roller n which rests upon the rod P2, so that said roller n. can roll back and forth on said rod P2 during the reciprocation of the plunger G2.
For the purpose of operating the slidable rod P and fan shutter 7', a rocle shaft, R, is mounted in suitable bearings, r, on the machine frame. On one end of said rockshaft, R, is a segment of gear teeth R which meshes with the teeth of the pinion f3, on the shaft f2 of the fan shutter f', and on the opposite end of said rock-shaft, R
Y there is a cam lever, R2, which extends under the lower endl of the slidable shaft P. o cause the rock-shaft R to rotate there is a lever R3 secured thereon, by means of which, when said lever is caused to swing in the direction of the arrow in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the cam R2 moves the rod P, upwardly which thereby lifts the ratchet arm N so that the sliding block L on the plunger rod G2 will slide thereon until said block engages a tooth which remains inthe line of travel of said block, when the plunger rod will be forced to travel in unison-with for the purpose of said block L', so that the compressing thrust of said plunger rod is thereby shortened. Simultaneously with the lifting of said ratchet arm, N, the gear segment R causes the fan shutter j to swing upwardly, and
partially or entirely close the air inlet opcny ing of the fan housing, sol that as the thrust of the pump plunger is shortened, the air intake opening of the fan housing is correspondingly reduced, so that the proper proportions of air and liquid fuel will be, at all times, maintained and supplied to the burner apparatus, whatever the quantity of the mixture. By thus increasing or diminishing the quantity, the heat generated Awill be increased or diminished.
The leverR3 is shown asconvenient for manual operation, but it is apparent that the same can be operated, by thermally controlled mechanism, as well as by pressure controlled mechanism, so that the action of said mechanism and burner apparatus will be automatic.,
lVhile I have shown and hereinbeforc described a plunger pump mechanism for furnishing a measured supply of fluid fuel, and a rotary fan for supplying air to the burner apparatus, it will be obvious that it may be possible to use other types of mechanism for these purposes without departing from the scope of my invention, and I therefore do not desire to limit myself to the exact form and type of apparatus and mechanism shown and described.
Therefore having fully shown and described my invention, so that others can utilize the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a fluid fuel generating plant, a pump barrel, inlet and outlet valve mechanism communicating therewith, a plunger operating in said pump barrel, a head on said plunger, a slidable block on said plunger, crank and shaft mechanism, a pitman pivoted to said block and to said crank, motor and gear mechanism to rotate said Shaft and gear mechanism, a swinging arm having a series of ratchet shoulders thereon stationarily secured to said pump plunger adapted to be engaged by said block, and mechanism to vertically adjust said swinging arm.
2. In a fluid fuel generating plant, a pump barrel, inlet and outlet valve mechanism communicating therewith, a pump Y plunger in said barrel, a Y head on said plunger, a slidable block on said plunger, shaft and crank mechanism, a pitman pivoted to said block and to said crank, motor and gear mechanism to rotate said shaft and crank mechanism, a swinging arm having a shoulder thereon stationarily secured on said plunger, and adaptedto be engaged by said slidable block, a vertically slidable I anisin to operate said pump,
rod, means thereon to engage and support said swinging arm, and rock-shaft and cam mechanism to operate said vertically slidable rod. f
3. In a fluid fuel generating plant, a pump, crank shaft, gear, and pitman mechmechanism to regulate the action of said pitman mechanism, a a'n, a valve to control the admission of air to said fan, a rock-shaft, a cam on said rock-shaft to actuate said pitman regulating mechanism, and gear mechanism on said rockhaft to operate said fan Valve, ifhereby the action of said pump and fan can be simultaneouslyv controlled.
