CUSHIONING DEVICE.
Application filed June 15, 1923. Serial No. 645,5e7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH REED, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cushioning Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to-the-accompanying drawing. v
My invention relates to cushioning devices.
It is the object of my invention to provide cushioning devices to prevent the transmission of vibrations, shocks, and strains from one element to the other, such as from a spring to the frame of the vehicle.
It is an additional object of my invention "to provide such cushioning devices which will suspend one member from another, such as a spring from a frame on ayielding cushion which may be removed and renewed as desired.
It is my object to provide such a cushion which will not only prevent the vibrations, shocks, and strains passing from one element to the other, but will also take up end thrusts which will prevent the wear and tear upon the parts which are not resilient to the extent that the resilient medium employed has such properties.

Referring to the drawings in detail:
1 is the frame of a vehicle to which a cage or housing 3 having extensions is secured by bolts 2 passing through said extensions and said frame. This housing has side walls 4 and bottom walls 5. The sidev tween as at 9 for the passage therethroug'h of the bottom portion of a T-shaped hanger,
which consists of the cross member 10 and the vertical member 11. The vertical member is provided in its lower end with an eye 12 through which passes a shackle bolt- 13. From this shackle bolt are suspended the shackles 14 and 15. The lower end of the shackle carries a bolt 16 which in turn hanger has either end supported in the apertures 18 of the rubber blocks 8, these blocks being carried by the retainer or frame heretofore mentioned. It is preferable to allow a space 19 between the blocks to permit of their expansion. It is also preferable to have the blocks cut away as at 20 to allow the T-shaped hanger to rock.
Turning to the modification shown in Fig. 5. it will be noted that I provide apair of semi-circular retaining members 21 within which are oppositely disposed semicircular rubber, cushions 22 so formed to receive on the interior thereof the bolt 23 carried on the end of the rod 24, so that the bolt and rod may turn not only on their own axis, but laterally while at the same time the thrusts and strains therefrom will not be imparted without being dampened and absorbed to varying degrees by the cushion 22 before passing, if at all, to the frame 1.
My invention is particularly'adaptable to automotive equipment.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such usual reinforcements of the resilient block which are customarily'in the art, like cordsand fabric members of textile or fibrous ma terial.
It will also be understood that I.v desire to comprehend within my invention suitable modifications which will-occur to one skilled, in the art in adopting my invention to varying conditions.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a cushioning device, a frame, a cagehaving extensions to detachably mount it on said frame, cushioning means detachably mounted in said cage, and supporting means suspended on said cushioning means and passing out of saiol'cage.
2. In a cushioning device, a frame, a pair of rubber blocks, a cage having extensions to detachably mount it on said frame and adapted to su(pport said pair of rubber blocks, a T-shape hanger having the ends thereon embedded in said blocks and suspended therefrom, the remainder of said hanger passing out of said cage, a shackle suspended from said hanger, and a leaf spring connected to said shackle.
3. In a cushioning device, a frame, a
cage having extensions to detachably mount it on said frame, oppositely disposed cushionin'g blocks havin 'T-shaped hanger having the transverse portion thereon located in said apertures, said apertures therein, a
blocksbeing cut away to perniit of the passage of. the remainder of the hanger from between the blocks outside of the cage, the
lower end of said hanger having an eye thereon, shackles suspended from said eye by a bolt passing therethrough, a bolt, a
second bolt assing through the other ends of said shac les, passing through an eye of the leaf spring, and a leaf s ring;
