To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN B. GLowAoKI, a citizen of the Republic of Poland, having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Fuse Ferrule Type for Removable Fuse Elements; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of fusible circuit breakers which are enclosed in cartridges.
It is an object of this invention to prepare a cartridge of the Sort just mentioned in which the fusible element will be held in place by means that can be disassembled without the use of tools so that a new fusible element may be quickly inserted.
It is afurther obect of this invention to supply a cylinder o fibre or other compressible material with metallic thimbles which shall be secured in each end thereof. It is a further object of this invention to so design these thimbles that the manufacture. of the cartridge will not be expensive. It is a further object of this invention to rovide a vent through which the explosive orce of the fuse may be relieved without danger of flame emerging from the cartridge. Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures'in the drawings and specification.
The invention (in a referred form) is i1- lustrated on the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

`The cartrid e consists of a cylindrical body 4 prefera ly of fibre or othery material which is non-conducting both for heat and for electricity and which preferably is compressible. Each end of the cylinder is supplied with a thimble gand 6 respectively. One of these thimbles 6 is slot-ted, as shown ,at 7 in Figure 5, to rovide tongues which in the manufacture o the cartridge are bent, forclng them into the body of the fibre as shown at 8 in Figure 5. Preferably -thesel es are forced into the body of thecar tri ge by. inserting a tool 4through the op ton site end of the cartridgev before the thim le 5 is in place.. The thimble 5 is secured in place by having dents 9 made in its inner surface so that the struck-up metal penetrates the body of the fibre. Said thimbles 5 and 6 may also be secured in position by screwing and riveting if desired. v
Each of the thimbles is provided with a flange 10 ,which contacts with the edge of the iibre cylinder. Upstanding from the flange 1) is a wall 1l which may be seen 1n Figure 6 and is shown in dotted lines in Figure 5. At two points the wall 11 is .cut
away to form notches 12 and the outside of the wall 11 and of the fiange 10 is threaded to receive a cap 13.
Between the cap 13 and the thimble 1() is a cover plate 14 which has two ears 15 projecting mto the two notches 12. Each off the covers also has a slot 16 extending diins ametrically nearly acrossl the cover, By
means of the lugs 15 and'notches 12, these slots are brought into parallel relation when the covers-are in place.' At the center of each slot 16 lis an enlargement 36.
A washer is positionedagainst the outer l I face of the cover plate 14 and extends as far as the outer edge of the wall 11. At its center it has a hole 38 which registers with the enlargement 36. An upstanding annular flange 39 provides a s ace 40 between the central part of the was 1er and the cap 13. This cap is provided with a plurality of holes 41 communicating with this space.
The fusible element 17 consists Aof a strip of fusible conducting material having notches 18 to make narrow connecting necks l19 `so that the points at which fusion will take place are definitely located. One end of the element is bent through a right angle and the other end 21 is bent through a small angle before the element is inserted in thev cartridge.
The cover 14 is inserted in the wall 11 and is placed with the lugs 15 in the notches 12. The end 21 of the element 17 is lthen introduced into the slot 16, and passed therethrough until the bent end 20 engages the cover 14.
The washer 37 has been previously permanently attached in the ca 13 with t e fla-n e 39 away from the mout of the cap. T e cap 13 subsequent to such attachment is screwed on and retains the cover 14 in place. At the same time, this cap, by causing the washer 37 to press the end 20 between the washer and the cover 14, insures ood electrical contact between the cap and t e fusible element. The second cover 14 is then engaged over the fusible element 17 by introducing the end 21 into the slot 16. The end 21 is then bent against the outside of the cover 14 and the ca 13 with its washer 37 in lace is ,screwed down. This presses the cndp 21 against the cover 14 and insures ood electrical contact between this cap an( the fusible element.
The caps 13 may if desired be provided with a knurled surface 22 in order to acilitate the screwing and unscrewing thereof. Preferably also, the cylinder 4 is made somewhat smaller at its ends to provide shoulders 23 so that the outer surface of the caps and the main body of the cylinder will be flush.
In the modification shown in Fi ure 11, one thimble, for example the thimb e 5, is provided with a bar 24 extending across it and having a slot 25 therein. Preferably the slot 25 will have anrenlar ement at its center like the enlargement 36 1n the slot 16. This slotted bar takes the place of the cover 14 and the end 20 of the fusible element 17 rests against the outside of this bar and is held against it by the washer 37 in the way already described. At the other end of the cartridge, the thimble 6 is provided with the notches 12 to position a cover 14 as in the modification already described.
In assembling this form of cartridge, the fusible element 17 is introduced through the slot 25 until the end 20 contacts with the bar 24. The cap 13l with a washer 37 therein is then screwed down and presses the end 20 against the bar 24 securinfr the fusible element 17 and affording good e ectrical contact. Then the cover 14 is placed over the end 21 b introducing this end through the slot 16, t e lugs on the washer being placed in the notches 12. The second cap 13 is screwed onto this end of the cartridge and its washer 37 presses the end 21 against the cover 14 as has already been described.
In the modification shown in Figure 12, the cartridge 4 has the same interior construction as the modifications already described and the caps 13a are similar to those already described except that from the outer surface of each cap projects a screw threaded stud 26 upon which is mounted a nut 27. The removal of this nut from the stud 26 is prevented by providing an enlargement 28 upon the end of the stud. To insure that the nut 27 shall never contact with the ca 13a so as to close the holes 41 a washer 42 1s provided, the diameter of which is small enough to insure that it will not cover the holes 41.
The outer surface of the washer 42 and the inner surface of the nut 27 make a clamping bar which can serve to hold the end of a conductor so that this cform of fuse is particularly adapted for use with fiexible conductors as in some forms of telephone switchboard work.
AIn the use of the device, a fusible element is inserted in the way which has been described and the cartridge is forced into the cli s 1 which are the terminals of the circuit to e protected by the fuse. When too large a current has blown the fuse, the cartridge is removed from the clips, the caps 13'* unscrewed and the remains of the fuse removed through the slots 16 or the slots 25 and 1 6. A new fusible element is then introduced in the way already described and the cartridge replaced in the clips. The use of the form illustrated in Figure 12 is similar except that instead of the clips, the binding posts made by the studs 26 and nuts 27 serve for connections to the conductors.
When the fuse blows the vapors or the llame, if a llame is produced, emerge through the openings 16, 36 and 38 into the space 40. There they spread out into a thin sheet and finally get to the external air through holes 41. By the time they reach the atmosphere therefore'their velocity has been absorbed and their heat expended so that no harmful effects can be produced thereby. The comparatively large volume of the space 40 assists materially in checking the velocit of the fiame or vapors and its thinness ai s in cooling them. The right angle turns that they must make also helps to reduce theviolence of their exit.
I am aware that numerous detalls of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention: v
1. In a fuse cartridge, a c lindrical hous ing of compressible materia thimbles, one in each end of said housing, each of said thimbles having a portion of its Wall displaced so that it penetrates into the material of the housing from the interior thereof, the displaced ortions of one only of said thimbles exten ing to the edge of the thimble.
